Warmer bridge pickup for PRS Custom
« on: July 14, 2021, 03:31:07 AM »
Iím looking for a warmer/fatter bridge pickup that works great for PRS Custom.
I currently use the rebel yell in this guitar, and while it do sounds great and really clear, I want to try something fatter as an alternative.  Iíll use it to cover anything from 80s rock to modern metal (dream theater, lamb of good, testament) and a little bit of classic rock/blues (govt mule, gary moore).
So far Iím torn between the holy diver, alnico nailbomb and the abraxas.
- The holy diver seems to be recomended a lot for PRS, but Iím afraid it would be too honky? However based on the ďhair metalĒ clips on BKP website, it sounds really close to the RY just with more mids, so I guess It could work in my guitar?
- the nailbomb because it was the first BKP I played many years ago (it was in a stop tail PRS singlecut), and it was simply the best high gain sound Iíve ever heard. However Iíve read that itís a hit or miss with some guitars, some people find it too cutting while some find it too dark.
- Iíve read that the abraxas was designed with the PRS Custom in mind, and it was basically a hotter Mule. I liked the mule in this guitar, but Iíve read that the abraxas is not really tight enough for modern metal.
Really appreciate if some could share their experience with these pickups. Thanks!

I think you are on the right track with the Holy Diver.

Out of the vintage hot line I guess you should consider the Black Dog.
BLACK HAWKS
IMPULSES
COBRA-T
WAR PIGS
STOCKHOLM
COLD SWEATS
MIRACLE MAN
TRUE GRIT

Holydiver sounds right to me.  I didn't like the Nailbomb nearly as much, it was a bit "c--ked wah" aggressive sounding and not versatile enough.  Awesome for high gain like you said, but the Holyidiver can do more things well and is definitely fatter (more middy).

I might also suggest the True Grits, which have really grown on me.  They're almost as high output as the Holydiver but less compressed, less middy but definitely not scooped at all, and more open in the high end.  I've tried a few BKP bridge humbuckers and in the end the True Grit has become my favorite, the Holydiver my second favorite.
