right I'm now planning the wiring for the miniswitch/4 conductor wiring. im after "humbucker/singlecoil/out of phase" for the neck VHII. I've attached the diagram for it from guitarelectronics.com, the wiring shown in the diagram, will it sound the neck humbucker's screw coil or slug coil when its in the middle position? ie. which is south?

South polarity = screw coil on humbuckers

As a general rule, ALL humbuckers are screw coil south polarity and slug coil north polarity.
