Old Guards for an old lady...
« on: January 25, 2021, 09:57:02 PM »
Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum, even if I use BKP for some years now.

My current project is an '78 Ibanez PF 200 (Performer, sort of LP copy) where I want to replace the Super70s that start to get really annoying. The PF 200 is a solid maple body with a "closed hollow" under her thin blonde maple top (the top is ~4mm thin and around the pickups there is about 1cm between the body and the top) and a fabolous bolt on neck.

I plan to rework the Super70s in future and keep them, as I really like their precise vintage sound. But currently they produce way too much feedback and sometimes the pole-pieces start to "sing" on their own.

So I got a set of golden Old Guards and plan to take advantage of the modern 4-wire layout by using Push/Pull Pots for coilsplit and serial/parallel wiring.
Honestly I have no idea of what potis to use (she has old vintage standard Potis now just saying "500") and how to wire them. I found a wiring diagram for a single S/P Pickup and one for the standard Coilsplit Layout. My Lady features 4 Potis (2x tone, 2x volume) and an encapsulated (4 ?! wire) 3-way toggle. About 15 years ago I rewired and shielded the electrics. But as a result (Cat6 cable) I don't know what I did^^.

PS: I don't ever use the tone controls and could also mount toggle switches instead of P/P Potis (something like the tri-sound switches, or toggles, 2-way, 3way?...)...

What would you do? How would you do it?

Thank you in advance!

kind regards from Austria
Stefan

Sounds a lot like your standard Les Paul 3-way toggle / 2 Vol / 2 Tone setup to me. I would simply lift out the wiring harness and fit all new pots, capacitors, jack, switch etc with all new wiring according to a suitable schematic from BKP's website.  I just use red and black 22awg stranded wire when I do rewires, and do the old twist for the jack wires with cable ties to stop the twist unwinding.  Never had any problems

Main thing is to check whether you have long or short type pots and switch and get the same type as replacements.
