Bell-like overtones/noise after lowering action
« on: February 11, 2023, 10:32:59 PM »
My guitar has EVO medium-jumbo frets, completely fresh strings (changed this morning), and I just set the action to 3/64th on the plain strings and 1/16th on the wound strings. When I palm mute on the low E and chug, I now hear this sort of feedback that’s almost as if I had clinked on a metallic bell with a metallic hammer. My chugs are now lost under this sea of extra noise, like a very metallic reverb.

I tried tying a rubber band around one of the springs to stop it from vibrating, but that did nothing. The problem attenuates a lot if I raise the action again. The overtones are there acoustically as well.

Any ideas of what this could be? Should I try those noiseless springs?

This is a Kiesel Aries, if that’s important at all.

If you lowered the action, but left the pickups still in their original position, it could be that the strings are getting a little too close to the magnetic poles of the pickups. The strength of the magnetic field will tend to try to hold the string above it still and this can create strong harmonics (wolf notes) which would be present both amplified and acoustically. I would certainly try lowering the pickups slightly to see if that gives you the same reduction as when you raise the strings.
Hi all, yes, it's another Tim! I'll be here to answer any questions you want to throw at me, here or via sales@bareknucklepickups.co.uk

it could be the truss rod resonating...that's the first thing that comes to my mind, try tapping the neck does it sound odd acoustically? are there unpleasant overtones?
