NCD and NGD: Get heavy! (Pic heavy too)
« on: September 27, 2011, 11:19:10 AM »
Hi guys,
I finally realized an idea long in the making and made a spontanious decision that seems to pay off!

First off the planned one, the NCD. Up until now I used an old cab my father gave me for until I had my own and it was not the greates to say the least. I started looking around and after searching the internet and asking my guy at the nearest music store I tried a Marshall 2061CX.
This is a UK handwired 2x12" cab, which is also rather large for a 2x12". Closed back, 60W, equipped with 2 Celestion G12H30.
Compared to my old cab, this one is such a beast.
Lot of fast bass, really packing a punch. The mids are very marshally and hella agressive, this thing ROCKS!
Now I gotta tame it before I can really say how it is (speakers are not played in yet), but hell, this things rocks, growls and cuts insanely good right now. Together with my handwired UK Orange Tiny Terror this screams at you like a lion.
The combination looks a bit off though....^^

Then the unplanned one...as some of you know I have been GASing for a metal Paula. On sunday I just happened to see one on ebay that looked really good, although it was gibson scale, which I donīt like. After thinking a bit about it and having a glass of whine I decided to go for it.
Now I got a Paula by Weller.
Itīs 5 piece Maple and Mahagony neck through with mahagony wings. 22 frets, string though body. 2 vol 1 tone pot, comes fitted with EMG HZ passive pickups. Fretboard is rosewood. Arched top. Grover Tuners.

This thing is a real surprise. First you pick it up you notice it is heavy, like a Paula should be. It seems to be very well build (cost me 360 Euros, feels like twice that much, if not more). Iīve seen guitars for over 1k that felt less well made.
The playability is something I am not used to as the scale is noticably shorter than on my other axes, but there is something really nice about the rest of it. I instantly felt somewhat comfortable with it. Also with the neck through design the upper fret acces kicks the ass of normal Paulas.
For a maple neck through guitar it seems to be rather dark sounding I think (darker than my solid mahagony body Dean Vendetta), but also nice and warm.
I also am positivly surprised by the pickups. To my ears they are miles better than the active emgs and work nice with this axe. Best "stock" I have had so far, though they have still have that EMG sound about them....but I might get to like it a bit more now. Only the high end sizzly they have annoys me. They will probably be switched for BKPs sooner or later, but I think I can actually work with these things.

Nice one!  :D

I've never heard of Weller as a brand, I must admit.  The design obviously owes quite a bit to ESP....!  I like the scoop at the neck heel, very neat.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I have never before either. Iīve only ever seen them sold on one specific ebay account (most people have it seems) branded as display guitars from music faires and such. The things that stand around there of a sales rep brings to stores and shows them off.
Mr Weller does most of the guitars auctioned (yes, actually auctioned) off on that acount.

And that scoop at the neck heel does not only look nice, it feels reeeeeaaaallly good too.

This far I can only say it was certainly worth the money, really good quality for the price. ( Then again I am not an expert, but I did not cut myself on the frets, the hardware is quality and I did not see anything unclean about the construcion.)

New brand for me. It looks nice, the neck thru reminds me of some Japanese guitars in the seventies.
Mules, VHII, Crawler, MM's, IT's, BG50's.

BTW, does anyone know the brand Acepro? Theyīre korean and are also sold by the same guy on ebay.

Also I read up a bit more about that Weller brand and am a bit confused...as I understand the ebay site these instruments are unbranded prototypes by guitar manufacturers to be shown at music shows or such to big brands who might pick up the line later....now these prototypes get bought, checked in germany and rebranded as Weller to be sold on ebay....or so they say.

So what I got might have actually been a prototype for ESP or Agile, if what they claim is right (and I am cautious).
