£200ish for orange TT cab - recomendations?
« on: December 16, 2007, 02:05:58 PM »
Hi all
In the wake of some decent mock exam results (3 A*s, 3As, and 3Bs), my parents have agreed to buy me an orange tiny terror as a combined christmas and birthday present  :D
And after many years in the wilderness, my uncle saw a gig of mine last night and has agreed to buy the cab for it; but I have little experience with stacks, and so need your advice.
The cab should be versatile enough for both bedroom practice (although apparently I can run my smokey amp into a cab for low volumes), and voulmes up to medium sized pubs and small clubs, as well as complimenting the tone of the TT.
My favoured tone is balanced; Strong bass, smooth mids, a little bright. I play mainly classic rock and blues, but a bit of everything really.
Questions:
1) at around £200, am I going to get better sound for my purposes from a mid range 1x12 or a cheap 2x12? Should I put in some of my own cash to step up to something considerably better?
2) what is the tonal differences between impendance ratings? I thought it would be quite useful to have two speakers in stereo, so I could run just one for bedroom practice, then run them both for gigs and rehearsals. Should I go for 2x16 ohms stereo and 8 ohms (parallel) mono, or 2x8 ohms stereo and 16 ohms (series) mono? The TT has 1 16 ohm output and 2 8 ohm outputs if that helps.
3) Finally, and most importantly, what should I buy?
Framus 2x12:

Orange 1x12

Zilla 2x12 with some speakers from their range (because I cannot be arsed to solder it together)

something else? I don't want to buy from outside the EU, btw.

Thanks, Bob

For 1x12 cabs I really like the 'Pilot' cabs made by Award Session (http://www.award-session.com/amplifiers_cabinets.html).

They have a set price for the cab itself, you then tell them what speaker you want and then charge you the price of the speaker on-top of that.

I have 1 of their 1x12 cabs with a Celestion Classic Lead 80 speaker in it and find it to be a very versatile cab and very well made.

****EDIT**** Turns out they've discontinued these cabs, which is unfortunate, as I was going to buy another to run my completed rack in Stereo  :(

I'd get the matching Orange 1x12.  Great little mini-stack  :)

But will the 1x12 work for a gig? I've heard orange cabs are bassy, but surely not enough to compete with a 2x12?

1x12 is fine for a gig.

Yea 1x12 is fine, I once gigged a massive room with my Fender HRDx 1x12 combo and I still only had it on about half volume. Besides, if you're playing anything reasonably large you'll probably just go through the PA anyway.

Bummer, that's exactly the cab I was going to suggest.

I wouldn't recommend the Zilla cabs, as their standard cabs are not very deep (only about 9"), and unfortunately it sounds like it too. Too little bass, and no "fullness" to the sound, whatever speakers you put in it.

It sounds like the Orange 1x12 might be your best bet now. The Vintage 30 in it, is not to everybody's taste, but you can always try a different speaker in it at a later date if you want.

Are you sure it's a vintage 30? that's what the orange website says, but according to celestion it's rated at 60w, and orange give a power handling of 100w. dolphin music say the speaker is a celestion G12K-100, which would fit better. But, looking at this (very large)

picture, it says handling 60w, and made in england. I thought they were made in korea now?
and two jack inputs? what are they for?

Time to send an email oranges way, methinks.

The current Orange 1x12 cabs have a Celestion Hot 100 in them, which is where the 100w power rating comes from.

I was quite intrigued by this, because when I bought my PPC112 a month ago the website definitely said the speaker was a G12K-100 (100W).  When the UK guitar mags reviewed the cab a few months back, the speaker was a G12K-100, because they said it might benefit from a lower-rated speaker.

So, I just looked in the back of mine - it's a Vintage 30, 60W and 16 Ohms.  And it's made in China.

I guess Orange had a recent re-think and changed the specs, but they need to update the website to say 60W.

According to the orange forums there are 3 versions of the PPC112
1) Made in England, Vintage 30, 60 watt, 16 ohms, smaller
2) Made in China, G12K-100, 100 watt, 8 ohms, larger
3) Made in China, Vintage 30, 60 watt, 16 ohms, larger.

Nothing like keeping things simple, eh?

I assume they're not all in current production, though?  If you buy new (and it's not old stock), presumably you get the Chinese cab with the V30.

you want the one with the G12K-100 in it :)

Or better, get yourself a 2 x 12 empty cab and put 2 G12K-100s in it.

I'm with Noodle on this, I bloody LOVE the G12K-100 :)

I'm sure the G12K is a fantastic speaker, but not for me, thanks. I'm not 8r00t41z enough for it

I have a custom made 1x12 cab - it's the size of a 2x12 for extra depth. Is loaded with an old early 80's Celestion G12-65 (higher powered Greenback type)

It was custom made by Custom Cabs and is black with silver grill cloth similar look to an old fender blackface type amp.

I am thinking of selling and would sell for £150 +PP which is much cheaper than I paid for it. If interested please PM me. Thanks
