I rewatched The Departed over the weekend. It's fab on first vieiwing but even better on second. Highly recommended.

ah come on... infernal affairs!!!
Old School Hong Kong kung-fu movies you've probably not heard of
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead - Not too bad actually
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford - Great recomendation, want to see it
Rescue Dawn - Christian Bale? good long tale I believe
No Country For Old Men - Preeetty nice
There Will Be Blood - already commented :P
Sunshine - yawns...
The Fountain - clever story!
Eagle vs Shark - Lol, sorry, just didn't enjoy it
This is England - odd story, but good still
Also on Hong Kong front, a man cannot possibly go wrong with anything that involves the names Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo on the same DVD case.
Plan 9 From Outer Space
They Saved Hitler's Brain
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes
Sympathy for the Devil
Avoid these and you'll be better off!
I can't believe The Big Lebowski hasn't been mentioned in three pages of replies, you NEED to watch this film.
And 7th Son - Sunshine? Really?
I really can't stand that movie :P

What's wrong with Sunshine? It's a good genuine sci-fi, there hadn't been any for a while...
Although a suprising amount of people seem to dislike it, I thought it was quite a good balance between plot/action and story/character development that people who enjoy both types of film would enjoy, but obviously not!
Maybe because it was marketed as being the next Armageddon, but what people got was a completely different film?
Will, here's some more that might still be available for download from the year before or so:
The Lives of Others
The Last King of Scotland
The Good Shepherd
Zodiac
Stranger Than Fiction
Curse of the Golden Flower
Babel
Pans Labrynth
Harsh Times
Flags of Our Fathers
Letters from Iwo Jima
Children of Men
The Prestige
The Queen
Red Road
Little Miss Sunshine
Volver
A Scanner Darkly
Breaking and Entering
Mischief Night
Little Children
The Host
Black Book
The Road to Guantanomo
Fast Food Nation
V for Vendetta
The Science of Sleep
Atonement
And also a brand new one which some might not like but is very #$%!& good: Silent Light
But If you don't like it, it will certainly help you get to sleep
I don't think anyone has mentioned any anime, so I'll list my faves:
Princess Mononoke
Ghost In The Shell
Appleseed
Appleseed: Ex Machina
Kiki's Delivery Service
Castle In The Sky
Spirited Away
yeah, out of the Ghibli stuff mononoke has to be a favorite, i really liked nausicaa as well.... i just like the cat in kiki's delivery service
Anything by Akira Kurosawa or David Lynch!
Quote from: HEAVIER THAN HELLI can't believe The Big Lebowski hasn't been mentioned in three pages of replies, you NEED to watch this film.
Ah now, if we're talking Coen Brothers then everyone should watch just about all of their films. But most especially The Big Lebowski and Fargo.
(Just skip Intolerable Cruelty and their horribly misguided remake of The Ladykillers :x )
Quote from: opprobrium_9Anything by Akira Kurosawa or David Lynch!
I wouldn't say anything by Kurosawa.
Anything by Akira Kurosawa or David Lynch!
I tried 'Withnail and I' already though, everyone says its absolutely wonderful, from where I'm standing, it isn't completely shitee, just weird

David Lynch's "Inland Empire" has some awesome mind-f*ckery stuff.
Anyone seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang!!!!
What was the film Val Kilmer and Al Pacino (I think it was him) were in, the bank robbery one? I remember watching it ages ago and thought it was pretty good, especially that scene where Kilmer is walking outside with his bag of money and a rifle then notices the police outside..
I just watched The Usual Suspects, what a great ending :)
i watched The Orphange (El Orfanato) the other week and really loved it - one of the few films that managed to creep me out recently .... and its kept me creeped out for longer than i care to admit
Also, i got Pan's Labyrinth the other day, and i was surprised at how good it was.
This is England was a fantastic film - must see.

I must see This Is England, I think it's on Film4 next week.
and something which seems to be like Platoon, but not so serious

Think that was mentioned a while back- isn't there a white actor playing a black guy?
Ong Bak is a pretty funny/stupid fighting movie. The fight scenes are so over the top, cr@p story (obviously) but its good entertainment.
I have a version of Ong Bak with the really cr@p dubs, I'd rather have subtitles.
I love zombie movies anyone got any good zombie flick recomendations ???
Also saw Cloverfield. Shot like Blair witch project, camcorder style. No one knows what the thing is but it destroys new york and eats people.
I thought Cloverfield was absolutely shitee. First person films like that aren't really my thing I guess, but I can't even see a way that it is good...
If you like the "stupid gory fun" type of horror movie, Hatchet and (surprisingly) Wrong Turn 2 are worth a look.
And also a brand new one which some might not like but is very $%&#ing good: Silent Light

Isn't that Chulutu or however you bloody well spell it? Now there is a movie that done right could scare the living jebus outta people
Saw Wall-E the other day and thought it was great. One of the best animated characters/films I've seen :)
Went to see Dark Knight on Saturday, thought it was really good, long though, but not a bad thing.
dark knight was awesome!!!
My girlfriend got me an Alfred Hitchc--k box set for my birthday and I've been watching 1 or 2 of his films every day since. The man's amazing. It seems strange but I'd never actually seen any of his films before (other than the Birds and Psycho), but I think I've seen the vast majority of the episodes of Alfred Hitchc--k Hour - the films are like extended, extra clever episodes.
Dark knight works as a standard crime drama as well as THE BEST batman film I've ever seen. Damn it's goodMmmmmmm Maggie Gyllenhaal :)
Oh & because I'm on a Maggie Gyllenhaal, I'm going to watch secretary again...
i like cloverfield... yeah it kinda suffers from the curse of the blair witch but it has so much more story than that piece of cr@p it dont really matter. I didnt really like the first 20 minutes and i dont really like any of the characters... but the film is good, the ending works well (even down to the clip of something landing in the sea behind the ferris wheel... why couldnt it just be something from the deep.... something that has always been there....waiting!!!)
i was worried the film would con us with suspense the way blair witch did, but at least it delivers with some good monster footage....getting right in there with it at the end!

i think we need batman fancy dressKushti
Did anyone else think that the little walk away from hospital was amongst the most comical but also the most scary?
SPOILER DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE FILM
I don't think that Two-Face is dead, it was only a small fall

Just on the bus home to Oxford after seeing Batman tonight. Brilliant film! I rarely get so blown away by an actor's performance, but this film really delivers in spades. And clubs... oh dear stop it roo...
:)

You should all just stop. Really. :P
You should all just stop. Really. :P
Aww come on Indy- why so serious?!
I just watched There Will Be Blood again, not sure what I think as it got so much praise which I dont think it lived up to. Excellent performance from DDL but I found it a let down after all the rave reviews and hype its got.
I DRINK YOUR MILKSHAKE!
Just watched Strangers on a Train, it was really enjoyable :) Definitely worth a watch.
i just watched black sheep the other day - made me think of braindead and bad tastewhat because it was just bad
its one of them films that gets better the more drunk you areI would have to be so drunk would need my stomach pumped *L*
Apparently they're doing a hollywood remake of Rec though :( I may watch to see how badly they butcher it.
watched 'get carter' tonight, the original caine version - thats a film and a half
Apparently they're doing a hollywood remake of Rec though :( I may watch to see how badly they butcher it.
I used to get really annoyed by remakes, and I still wish they'd stop doing them, but now my attitude is: if they're good, fine, if they're rubbish you've still got the original.
watched 'get carter' tonight, the original caine version - thats a film and a half
One of the best British films ever :) . Have you seen the remake? It's almost worth watching just to see how completely they misunderstood the original - and for Stephen T. Kay's hilariously inappropriate directorial techniques.
Saw Equilibrium last night. I thought it was rubbish - cheap Holywooded ripoff hybrid of Brave New World and 1984.
They are doing something with The lost Boys film. A remake or sequel or something and Aiden have covered one of the songs......so it looks like it'll be bollox.

Only just got round to watching the whole of A Clockwork Orange. I've seen it in parts when its been on tv but never the whole thing. Anyway I LOVED it, such a good film. Why dont they make films like this any more? It inspires me to create something better than the usual hollywood cr@p, but I'm just so bad at writing and with ideas that I'd never get anything done
Yeah, after watching it I read IMDB reviews for it and one was saying how unlikable Alex was. I found it the opposite, I thought he was a great character and liked him throughout, how can you hate someone who says eggyweggy and steakywakey?
I've seen Eyes Wide Shut (thought it was good but cant stand Tom Cruise and the music got really annoying), Full Metal Jacket (loved the first half, the 2nd not so much) and I have The Shining still to watch. I've seen parts of that on tv as well but never the whole thing. Last time I saw it I got too scared and turned it off
Just watched Mirrors online, it was pretty cr@p  Very predictable and Kiefer Sutherland is playing his usual role of shouting a lot which only really works well for Jack Bauer :P
He is Jack Bauer! It was great watching it in the cinema, it's total shitee but the whole audience were pissing with laughter at the "Jack" bits.
OK going off (but on) topic, I've listen to Radio 5 a lot at work & quite enjoy Simon Mayo's show in an afternoon, but what I love is on a friday between 3 & 4 they have the film reviews on & it's brilliant.

I don't always agree with Kermode, but he is funny when he starts ranting. I get exactly like that when I'm talking films with my work colleagues (who think Adam Sandler movies are the pinnacle of cinematic brilliance).
Adam Sandler rules! Sorry :D
Adam Sandler rules! Sorry :D

The first one was good, give that credit.
Went to see Tropic Thunder last night, it wasnt as good as I thought it was going to be but still wasnt shiteeee. Tom Cruise is actually good in it which really surprised me as I usually hate him in any film he's in
Watched Speed Racer round my mates house after that, pretty shiteee film with really annoying characters, but the cgi and car "fight" scenes are great. Also, Christina Ricci :P
Has anyone seen any of the old Phantasm films?
Has anyone seen any of the old Phantasm films?
Yep, I really like the first couple but then they went downhill a bit. Long time since I've seen them though.
I bought a copy of Once Upon A Time In The West a while back as I have always loved it. Sure would like to see a restored full screen version though.
is Rec the one that's just been re-made & called Quarantine?
Quarantine isnt the same, its an american remake of Rec and it looks shiteee :(

Phwoar, thoroughly recomend 'Taken'
excellent
My friend tells me Taken is really good, but apparently he hasnt even heard of Pulp Fiction, Indiana Jones, The Shining or Human Traffic, so I dont think his opinion is worth anything
Brand is quite funny in FGS I think
watchmen..... quite soon now!
Scary Movie is ok, it has its moments and is better than every other spoof american film that followed it :) Which isnt exactly hard, I suppose.
Have joined the new film club at uni, they're showing Memento this week which looks pretty good..
Saw the new Clint Eastwood film Gran Tourino. Its a sad film and surprisingly really good. He comes over as a heartless bigot at first...anyway I won't spoil.
I would really like the opinion of someone who hasnt read the comics
well i have just been watching the watchmen. i enjoyed it very much but obviously my expectations were high and i dont think it was perfect (it was never going to be though)
I would really like the opinion of someone who hasnt read the comics as i do think a big flaw in it was that it tried to give too much to the fans - sometimes at the expense of an easier narrative... i really enjoyed picking out all the frames and references lifted direct from the comic but that doesnt really make it a good film
i think the change in story at the end made a lot of sense so dont mind it at all- the flowery bullshiteeee and smallville style explanations that went with it did not!!
overall i think its the best adaptation we ever could have hoped for, it is a damn good film and i dont know how it could have been made better... adding the stuff they missed out would not have improved it.. taking out the very minor stuff they added might just flowed a little better for me but may have left it a bit too dry for cinema
My mate that wanted to see it felt it was a very deep ending, but IMO it was basic and shallow.
I just finished rewatching Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs. This has been my most exciting saturday for quite some time :\
Saw Lesbian Vampire Killers today - a bit better than I expected. Completely fails as a horror film, and not very saucy either, but it is pretty amusing. Lots of lovely ladies too.
Furthering my recommendation for SEX DRIVE in another thread. I think its worth watching the first two minutes of this, these guys rule

Not the same here, I can't stand gross-out teen sex comedies. They actually really piss me off because they seem to be set on another planet than the one I live on!
Having said that, I did like Superbad... I don't know exactly what makes it different from from Sex Drive, Road Trip, Role Models or American Pie Presents Band Camp, but it works for me and they don't.
I just did a download of Sex Drive and it had loads of it chopped out. So I stopped watching it as i don't want to miss any riveting bits!
I have just watched "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" on DVD. I'd read the book and knew what to expect but it was very painful to watch.
JM: I reckon I owe you a favour, will get you a digital copy sorted for Saturday. Extended and unrated :D
and the genre, well its not something that can be taken seriously.
American Pie got old after the first one, there can't be follow ups on these methinks.

Anyone here seen 'Man Bites Dog'? That's a mad one! :crazy2: :minigun:

LOADS of important Rorschach missed out, including "Possibly homosexual. Must investigate further.." and the like which go towards showing him to be complete and utter bastard, he get's off in the film pretty easy, I'd like to think this wasn't because of studio pressure to avoid having an overtly right wing "hero"...
The more I think about Watchmen, the more the missing stuff annoys me.
Because of the changed ending, Bubastis isn't explained and surely loads of folks were thinking "what's this cat with antaenne?
Hollis Mason being beaten to death with his humanitarian award, which is a pretty vital part of the build up of tension in the public.
Virtually none of Dr. Manhattan's speech on Mars with his photo, which explains how he sees the world since his transformation.

Anyone seen 'The Red Baron', I think its a German production, as an answer to 'Flyboys'.
Whats wrong with it? You work in animation I seem to recall?
I should probably say you work in CGI or something rather than animation I think :)
Also at the time of watching it (probably would be the same now though), I was appreciating it for historical drama rather than full on film. I quite enjoy the WW_ type films.
Anyone seen 'The Red Baron', I think its a German production, as an answer to 'Flyboys'.
Good Lord, someone who's heard of "Flyboys"? Sheesh I thought that one had quietly crept away and died. I worked on that, ahem, masterpiece and let's just say it's not the highlight of my career. :?
Saw 'let the right one in' last night, thought i was very good. Dialogue was in sweedish
but it was subtitled in english. I wouldn't recommend it if you scare easily though,
not that it's a ful blown horror film by any stretch of the imagination
Also watched My Bloody Valentine, I wish I had seen it in 3d at the cinema. Worth the watch atleast
Yojimbo and Seven Samauri are fantastic. Several of the Zatoichi pictures are fantastic too.watched ran on tv a while ago ... $% it's gory! didnt see the beginning though. good movie, but i like the others better :P
But none of them are up there with Ran, which doesn't get the recognition it deserves. A sublime picture.

That was my favourite TV show when I was a kiddie! So many great characters. I've got it on DVD too.
Think I will be going to see Coraline 3D some time in the next week or so, it looks great. I've heard from quite a few people that the 3D stuff works really well in it so I'm excited to see it :)
I love how it looked though. I'm still not completely sold on 3D. Maybe its just my poor eyesight though but I always find some of the things that should be popping out of the screen just look blurry instead :( It made my eyes ache a bit as well towards the end, same thing happened for Monsters vs Aliens. When it works its really cool though.
Was the film all animated in 3D or what? It didnt look like normal 3d animation, didnt look smooth enough for that..
i think my interpretation was different to everyone elses and apparently different to the book too, although i havnt read that to be sure
i just mean with the group of people i was with rather than everyone in the world ;)
(No doubt all will be made a lot simpler in the American remake.  )Please tell me this isn't happening

I saw Drag Me to Hell.
I gather the director often produces funny gore stuff?
Has anyone seen Transformers yet? I heard it was rubbish.
Gran Torino - Great film, good story line and great acting.Agreed. It is pure genius.
Gran Torino - Great film, good story line and great acting.Agreed. It is pure genius.
Just tried to watch Max Payne and had to turn it off after 15-20 minutes  Absolute twaddle. The sound is really shitee as well. I dont know if its just a bad quality copy or what but it seems like its really compressed; the background noise doesnt stay constant, like its quiet when theres talking then goes loud when talking stops. So annoying.Worst.....film.....ever
after some resistance i finally managed to watch Aliens with my girlfriend... (i already saw it a million times, of course...) like Star Wars that's a movie that will never grow too old.My partner loves sci fi although I'm not too much of a fan, I prefer grittier stuff.
but no, she didn't like it.
girls...

I've heard it's exactly like the first one, so if you saw that draw your own conclusions!
I won't be bothering.
Because of this thread I've bought Gran Tourino on DVD for £12, so it had BETTER be good!
Just watched Flightplan on BBC1. Boring!
Just watched Flightplan on BBC1. Boring!
and predictable! Panic Room is on in the next few days. Very similar feel. Also fairly boring and predictable.
BTW, does anyone else think that Christian Bale is the new Sean Connery i.e. plays the same part in every movie. I love the guy, but he's exactly the same as The Dark Knight etc.
Watched 'Anvil: The Story of Anvil' yesterday, though it was absolutely brilliant :D
Went to see Public Enemies last night. I love me some Michael Mann, but it feels like it could have been shortened a great deal & not lost anything. I liked the lengthy silent moments, but i probably still would have enjoyed it if some stuff was cut and i hadnt arleady seen it.
There are a few like that, allways play the same part.
Lee Byung Hun (my fave badass)
Jim Carry
My girlfriend says Michael Cain is one.
There are some actors that are very versitile like Tom Hanks and Will Smith.
IMO
Watched "Lost in Translation" tonight. I didn't like it first time but have seen it a couple of times since. It's growing on me, there's quite a lot of hidden depth to it. Quite a poignant and sad film really.
I did however find it a little bit unbelievable that Bill Murray's character wouldn't have tried to 'get jiggy' with Scarlett Johansson in the scene when they were in bed together. Perhaps this reflects more on my character than the characters in the story!
I think it's meant to be a slightly more "spiritual" attraction than that!
May I ask what nationality you are Murraymurray? It does impact on your review :P
Sticking with the recent Coogan phase, just remembered about The Parole Officer. Hilarious film!

Oh, I hate that film! Can't sympathise with the main characters at all, they're such a pair of self-centred tossers

Im from NZ, i enjoy the odd gay joke, but an hour and a half of the one joke is a bit much. there was some pretty funny bits in it, but overall i didnt think it was great.

Hmmm, not familiar with NZ's humour so I can't comment. Sacha's kind of humour doesn't seem to travel to well anyway.
Just watched Edward Scissorhands. Somehow I've never got round to watching it before. Awesome film :)i love it i love it i love it.
Just got back from seeing Public Enemies.I wanted to go and see that with Kez the other day, but when she saw how long it was we ended up watching "The Hangover" which made me want to die.
You guys suck, the Hangover is the funniest film I've been to all year. No real 'jokes' but I laughed all the way through. It's literally just shiteee, and I mean that in the purest sense. It's a big steaming pile of stinking excrement, and going to watch is just like shoving your face into that pile and inhaling relentlessly.
- but you have a potentially very dramatic moment completely ruined by a comedy BBC special effect
Saw Bruno on Sunday, still trying to form an opinion. Watched Ali G in da house on tv the other night, and although Bruno has some funnier parts in it Ali G has a better script still
sort of off topic, I'm just watching the Torchwood Children Of Earth...bloody hell it works as a drama!!!
Gran Torino - Great film, good story line and great acting.Agreed. It is pure genius.
Indeed. The spitting scene made me laugh out loud. I was also very surprised to find out the girl who played Sue was only 16 when it was filmed :o
I just watched The Happening as it was on sky anytime. Wow. That is quite possibly the worst film I've ever seen  Everything about it is terrible. The acting is especially bad, Zooey Deschanel is awful.

All I will say is:
You know a film will be shitee when the lead is played by Mark Wahlberg.
this might have already been mentioned, but has anyone seen priceless? I saw it a week or two ago, and thought it was awesome. I'm a fan of farce, though. :)

Is that the French romcom with lovely Audrey Tautou?
Yeah, getting a bit older, but stil damn hot. And getting her stuff out more so these days

harry potter and the half-blood prince.
excellent adaptation, brilliant direction and, overall, my favourite in the HP series...
does anyone agree?
They missed out LOADS from the book.. like the final battle, that guy turning into a werewolf and *SPOILER*dumbledore's funeral!!*SPOILER*
I dont know how they missed such important things out haha
it is very 1984 in feel
I thought Pelham 123 was excellent. Great acting all round and really well shot. The money transfer made lots of sense i though, it worked in the context of the movie.
the big day is october
HMV has some good cheap dvds at the mo.
Just bought Casshern and Brotherhood.
Have Rise of the Dog Soldiers to watch later tonight.

Come on, nobody thinks the remake is excellent.
:P
Casshern is mental! Beautiful but mental, I only had a rough idea of the plot but it is a stunning film.

I thought Moon was fantastic, but then again I really enjoy Sam Rockwell.
I've become rather picky when it comes to movies. I like Robert Aldrich a LOT!
In fact, so much so that I nowadays have a hard time watching anything made by anybody else. Sure, he's made some cr@p as well, but compared to his better works (Flight of the Phoenix, The Grissom Gang, Emperor of the North (Pole), Twilight's Last Gleaming, The Longest Yard...) everything else just seems childish, pointless, lifeless and lacking of style, apart from the odd film or so. I like some films by John Sturges, as well.

What an awesome name/idea for a film!
Anyone else see 'I know who killed me' on ITV2 (I think) the other night? It was on quite late.
I thought it was ok (innocent Lindsey Lohan is hotter than the tarty one), but a bit confusing. I read through the Wiki page for it and it became quite clear, but it really should have been portrayed better.
FWIW it has won a few 'worst film' awards
i'm pretty useless/scared etc.

You forgot another (relatively new) cliché: "Hmmm, I can't get a signal on my cellphone..."
(Alternative version: she can get a signal - and it rings just when she's hiding under the table in the huge deformed redneck psycho's "workshop")
But I LOVE horror movies! (despite the fact I spent ages on that other thread bemoaning the quality of movie scripts...)
I watched the remake of 'The Last House On the Left' and it started with the cell thing, then followed by Dave's cliches (in order) whilst the whole story was based upon the reverse of your second cliche.

Hmm, I must watch that I suppose...Its really bad. It doesn't make sense. If I had seen the original I think I wouldn't have watched it, and from what reviews I have read, the original seems to be regarded as a better film.

I am assuming you will have seen the original?
I also watched '17 again' a few nights ago, I was particularly sceptical about it due to the lead role, but was pleasantly suprised, it was a happy teen romantic film. Even if some of the comments were totally devoid of control, and was just painfully obvious to the storyline.
I would rather you watch that one Philly. It's just that tiny bit better.
yeah, in addition to being a wuss, the blatant continuity errors/ridiculous suspensions of disbelief required kinda get to me with a lot of horror storylines.
"Let's split up so the psycho can bump us off one by one!"
"Right, we've knocked the baddy/psycho over, instead of nicking his gun/machete/weapon and rendering him useless and thus ending the film an hour too early, let's just run away instead"
"Hmmm, this sounds fishy and possibly extremely dangerous, let's not call the cops and instead investigate ourselves without telling anyone where we are and without bringing any weapons to defend ourselves with"
etc. etc.
I'm not sure about the horror fans thing, though, philly- I'm not a horror fan at all and i can spot the cliches a mile off. Sometimes the fans are willing to ignore the cliches (i know i am in the stuff i like)... :)
That's just brilliant, Dave!!! Spot on!
I've not read this thread yet but after reading the CGI thread I can see the forums taste in film is great ... and thus I'm suggesting the Sam Raimis movie Crimewave, co written by the Coen brothers.Does Bruce Campbell appear in that? Im always happy to see him rock up for cameos in Sam Raimi films.

just got back from inglourious barstards and actually enjoyed it a lot more than i was expecting to. its typical tarantino, but not annoyingly so. he may have got over those things that mde him cool in the 90's and actually moved on a bit

I have just spent the bank holiday weekend at Frightfest, so I've seen 22 films since Thursday evening.
Look out for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and an Australian revenge movie called The Horseman - excellent!
I must try that one year, sounds interesting.
There is a film about Sorrorities out on the 9th of Sept, the trailer seems to be ok. May be more 'teen horror' though.
yeah, i would say inglourious bar-stewards represents more substance and less of the style that have dominated films after pulp fiction. there are still elements of it there but they dont get in the way of the story like he has allowed to happen in the past
Just finished watching Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead. Fantastic!
Been watching a lot of Wes Anderson movies. Bottle Rocket was ok, Rushmore is amazing and a new favorite of mine, Royal Tennabaums is great and The Life Aquatic not so good, i didn't even finish watching it.

Pretty much agree with that assessment, but I have a soft spot for Bottle Rocket.
Have you seen The Darjeeling Limited yet?
the life aquatic does have its moments, but its no tennabaums and definately no rushmore.
darjeeling ltd was good but more forgettable than the earlier stuff
I went to see District 9 yesterday. I really enjoyed.Think I'll go watch it today.
I watched Memento yesterday. Too many holes, couldn't enjoy it.

Yeah, it does seem a bit insubstantial, but I enjoyed it more than The Life Aquatic. I wonder what Fantastic Mr Fox will be like?

Braindead is another good peter jackson film.
He hasnt done anything as cool as those 2 for a long time
I watched the Constant Gardener last night and thought it was excellent.
Why is there no good DVD of Braindead???!!!!!
QuoteWhy is there no good DVD of Braindead???!!!!!
I got one. Seems quite reasonable to me.
Couldn't be bothered to check previous posts, anyone seen District 9? Or anything recent? What's this Dorian Grey one?
I know the book quite well ( being an Oscar Wilde fan and all). It'll be interesting to see what they make of it.
Bad taste
I was at the UK premier of that film with about 15 other people. It broke down in the middle as it was in Aberystwyth Arts Centre for the Welsh International Film Festival back in 92 or 93 IIRC. I think they'd run out of 50 pence pieces.
'I kick arse for the Lord!'

Which gives me another chance to have my regular moan:
 Why is there no good DVD of Braindead???!!!!! (or Meet The Feebles for that matter)
Jackson seems to have no interest in his early films.
Went to see District 9 yesterday, apart from the horrible South African accents and motion sickness it was a really good movie.
There's no need to be big on sci-fi to enjoy the movie, it's an apartheid movie with aliens 8)
I just watched Zack and Miri Make a Porno, what a superb film. Kevin Smith (and his gang) always deliver on absolutely every level. incidentally I've found a shop that will make a 100% accurate clone of Kevin Smiths trench coat :D :D
Also, the SA can vary a bit anyway can't it? I have the pleasure of working with one, sometimes things get confusing, but generally used to it.
i watched Hellboy 2: the golden army... pure Del Toro sickness, no real script but veeery funny!Still think Kroenen from the first movie is the best $%ing looking villian EVER!
And yet another who's just seen District 9. I thought it was fantastic. :D
Wait, I know how to fix it: I thought Wolverine was quality!
My brother absolutely hated Wolverine, although we usually like superhero movies. But I'll wait and see, we don't always agree.
Meanwhile, I watched Underworld: Rise Of the Lycans last night. Disappointing.
District 9 was bloody awesome!

What did you expect from Rise of the Lycans? The first two Underworld movies where watchable at best IMO :D

District 9 was bloody awesome!
I was watching Die Hard 4.0 yesterday and I was fiddling with the audio to see if Bruce Willis would break into a French accent or something, to my surprise a bloke started describing the movie like "there is a red dot flashing on the screen", I laughed so much, lol..District 9 was bloody awesome!
I want to see it, but the only showings round my way seem to be audio described/subtitled. NOOOOOOOO!
Saw the Ip Man film the other day. Amazing - waiting for it to come out on DVD in this country.According to Amazon it's out on 26th of October
Anyone who likes their Chinese martial arts films should watch it.
I tried True Blood but sadly thought it was utter shitee. Incredibly cheesy and full of annoying characters, as far as I could tell!

Do you post on MAP or KFM?
Choy Li Fut and San Shou.
How many Wing Chun guys does it take to change a light bulb? 100. One to actually screw it in and 99 to say "my way is truer to WC principles/more authentic/the true secret teachings................"
I keep seeing adverts for The Invention of Lying. It looks absolutely terrible :(
I haven't seen the trailer, but the title (obviously) makes me think of Liar, Liar. Which is not a good thing to be reminded of. :|
I have no idea what you just said :lol:Isn't the film about them all talking, but saying lies? Then surely you'd have to translate back to what they are actually saying, lol..
The Invention of Lying actually confuses me. Surely if they were all lying then you'd have to translate what they say into what they would say when they're not lying.
So apart from translating French of something (i.e. simply reading subtitles) you have to think in your head about what they really said aside from what they are falsely saying. So you have to work your brain even more to enjoy a film.
Which just makes my head hurt thinking about it, I'd hate to sit in for 1-2 hours of it.
I watched GI Joe.
I sincerely and wholeheartedly recommend that NO ONE watch this film, ever.

Is Sienna Miller hot in it though?
Only if one of them materialised out of the screen and gave you a blow job would the film be worth the time.
Yes. Very much so. And Rachel Nichols far more so. And it still doesnt make it worth it. Only if one of them materialised out of the screen and gave you a blow job would the film be worth the time.

:o
wasn't there talk about a trailer park boys film ages ago? what ever happened to that? Or is this the same one? The series is awesome :D
I'm starting to wonder if I might actually like this G.I. Joe effort.
Mind you, it is from the director of The Mummy and Van Helsing so the odds are heavily stacked against it. :?
i actually didn't mind the mummy, but that being said, it's hardly of major cultural significance either.
I went to see Zombieland today. It was canny funny & doesn't take it self too seriously. I rather enjoyed it. Woody Harrelson is a legend.
I'm going to go see Halloween 2 tomorrow. Quite looking forward to that. :)
3:10 to Yuma.
Fairly decent and gritty 'old styled' western.

I assume it was the Bale/Crowe version. Have you seen the original, with Glenn Ford and Van Heflin?
1,000,000,000,000 times better. :D

I've seen the 2D version - that was very good. Maybe I should give 3D a go! Is it really bad 1980s 3D stylee?

i think tv shows have been mentioned in here a bit, so here's a word of warning- do NOT watch Being Erica (i think that's the name... something like that) on E4 (unless you enjoy watching stuff which is terrible to laugh at how bad it is). In my defence, there was nothing else on, and figured I'd give it a shot. It. Was. Horrible. I think it's the worst thing I've seen since I decided to give Will and Grace a chance... o_O
haha you look about 10 in that pic.I got I.D'd earlier buying ibuprofen! (16!??!)

Not a very good storyline
I know they are not movies, but my girlfriend bought me the first 3 seasons of Miami Ink and the first season of L.A Ink because they were on offer at the local DVD store. I have been enjoying watching these recently and it has even inspired me to get some more tattoo work done myself.
I know, but it was no Finding Nemo tbh!

I loathe these programmes, they're full of actually relatively mediocre artists whom people now think are the very limit of what's possible to do with tattoos and they imply this nonsense idea that you HAVE to have some passionate back story to get tattooed in the first place.
Plus some of the hygiene issues ignored are appalling and they've created a spate of scratchers the world over who now think the life of a tattooer is that of a rock star.
[/rant]
best tattoo back story ive heard was of this wierd old bogan guy i met once.
he had a picture of 2 toasters fornicating
the story behind it was "I like toast and I like F*(kin"

against my better judgement i watched you, me and dupree last night. my better judgement was right... :(

I watched that a while ago. I do like Kate Hudson. Owen Wilson deserves a good kicking though for playing the same character yet again. That man has soooo much range.
I've never felt the urge to watch You, Me and Dupree.

I like Hudson, I like Wilson (at least in Wes Anderson films), but I've never felt the urge to watch You, Me and Dupree.
If I ever do feel like watching it, I know it's easily available on ITV2 at all times (unless it's one of the days they're showing Along Came Polly, Die Hard 2 or The Scorpion King)
And LOL about ITV2, the ITV digital channels do seem to have a stock of about 10 films which they show over and over again. you forgot mission impossible, though, and the world is not enough. But they're actually decent, so that's ok. EDIT: die hard 2 is decent as well. I don't think I've actually seen the other two, but have heard bad things...
anyone watching flash forward?
And, theres a new A-Team coming out. I like it already.
And, theres a new A-Team coming out. I like it already.
Hmmm....... we'll see. Hope it's not another load of tripe like the Starsky & Hutch and Dukes of Hazzard movies. :?
I like the casting of Sharlto Copley as Murdock, though. He'll be good.
I watched Children of Men yesterday, and Doom today. Guess which was the better movie? I love The Rock but Children of Men blew me away.
Plus Liam Neeson! He is so dreamy.
ok for the A-Team fans...piccie

Also I took my son to see Fantastic Mr Fox. I love it, I reckon it's going to be a must own on Blu-ray. Everything is spot on & very close to the book...& then some! Wes Anderson has taken the basic story & made sure that it makes sense to kids & adults. Lots of adult soul searching & general slap stick for the kids. Brilliant movie
Oh the Jarvis c--ker cameo is brilliant
oh, so i guess the dude on the left is face? Is he the guy who used to be in alias?
time for another "i watched it so you don't have to!" warning... couple of nights ago i watched the jerk theory, it was on sky in the middle of the night.
Watched Zombieland on Saturday, it was truly awesome.
anyone seen the new Michael Caine movie yet, looks ace
saw baby mama last night, it was actually pretty good.
yeah, definitely. i watched a bit of it last night, i'd seen it before a couple of times on sky, which is why i didn't watch it all. EDIT: it could have done without that bit with the fighter jet, though. it loses a star for that. I prefer my daft actioners to be extremely implausible, rather than flat out impossible.
Just watched Dragon Hunter, it's got to be one of the worst films ever made. The script is awful, the dialogue would have been better if it were improvised. Oddly the characters are almost identical to Kröd Mändoon and the Flaming Sword of Fire.
I though Baby Mama was great but I'm a huge Tina Fey fan. Do you watch 30 Rock, the humour is similar to Baby Mama.
I laughed out loud at the helicopter scenes - the fire hydrant and car in particular. When the fighter jet came in I was stunned into silence.
His screen daughter was very nice though. Maybe a bit of a mini crush is being developed.

i dunno, but i just kinda imagine that if you jumped onto a fighter jet you might, y'know, die. especially one which is about to crash.
Isn't the whole point of action movies like Die Hard to be completely over the top and impossible? :P
Watched it at the weekend but I've seen it loads of times before, cant beat a Die Hard film for a bit of fun! Helicopter takedown was the best part of the film haha

Yeah, I love the first two Die Hard movies (and to a lesser extent the third one too) but the fourth one was disappointing.
There's a big difference between watching a stuntman on a wire smashing through a sugar-glass window and watching something that only ever existed in a computer.
They're both fake and ultimately unrealistic, but at least in the first case something really happened, somebody got some real bruises. Action scenes done with CG just don't have any "weight".
I don't think I quite agree on this one. I like CG because it makes the impossible possible. But if the CG effects are cr@p and they don't look real then everything falls apart. In that case it's better to stick to regular stunts. And just to clearify: I have nothing against regular stunts.
A movie like Die Hard is great with just lots of stunts and no computerized effects, but imagine super hero movies without the use of CG. We would be back to the "Stoneage".

+1
Lord of the Rings wouldn't be possible without CGI. Well it would, but it'd look shiteee.
It was too much CGI and not enough real stunts. Just like the last Indiana Jones movie.
They seem to think that just because something can be animated and the individual bits of the picture look realistic, it makes the whole thing plausible - but it doesn't.

funnily enough, i looked up about die hard 4 on wiki, and apparently the point was to not use too much CGI and make it seem more realistic...
yeah, exactly, philly. if it's something you just plain can't do without CGI, then use CGI (as long as it looks reasonably realistic). If it's something you can do in real life, unless it's really dangerous, or prohibitively expensive, don't use CGI. And even if it is either of those two, you shouldn't use CGI too much or it starts to look a bit fake.
that new indiana jones film was spoiled a bit by it, too, yeah. I kinda fell asleep towards the end though and woke up not knowing what the heck was going on, so I probably didn't give it a fair chance, though... though if it were truly awesome, would i have fallen asleep?
It is possible, at least for me, to fall asleep watching a good movie.
It is possible, at least for me, to fall asleep watching a good movie.
I quite often do that, too. Nothing to do with the quality of the film, I think it's just something to do with sitting still in a dark room! It tends to happen at certain times of day, especially around 6-7pm.
oh, i could probably fall asleep on a clothesline.
and the fugitive kicks ass.
how do i take a picture of myself asleep?
but yeah, i will. i doubt i'll ever get one, though, it's more a figure of speech (i hope)...
The only Coen brothers I've seen that I actually enjoyed, then again I've only seen this and NCFOM which I didnt like at all.
I tried to get into both of them and just couldn't. I'll try the Big Lebowski again then! Don't know if I can be bothered to sit through NCFOM again :P

I think I must've been about 17 when I tried to watch it as well.. maybe at the grand age of almost 21 I'll get it now.
I started watching Zoolander last night. I got about 15 mins in before switching off. Have I had a sense of humour bypass or is it really that bad?

Maybe everyone will disagree, but I don't think Ben Stiller is actually a very good actor.

hey, i never said he was a good actor. a lot of the famous actors just play the same part over and over. in fact i think that's probably just what they're like in real life, and they got typecast.
For me Stiller falls into the same sort of category hat Jack White does. A lot of people seem to think that everything they do is brilliant and they can do no wrong. I totally disagree - although I do like a few White Stripes albums.

I think The Raconteurs are much better than The White Stipes, Consolers of the Lonely has some great songs on it :)

Watched Coraline last night - Was superb. Great story (neil gaiman), great animation (henry selick) and amazingly creative. Sort of super dark alice in wonderland - animated pan's labyrinth maybe?
Class film.
yay... after a few terrible choices over the past few days i watched kamikaze girls last night. Awesome. Crazy, but in a good way.
I liked that film a lot!
Have you seen Sakuran, also starring Anna Tsuchiya? It's a completely different kind of film, but it looks amazing and she's really, really good in it.
They (Lovefilm) introduced a scheme of giving extra rentals for the ones you'd missed. I said I'd missed 5, and they gave me 5 - but I had to use them before the end of the rental month. That was 5 November in my case, and I received the two discs they'd sent me in early October on 3 and 4 November! So I had about 24 hours to watch them, return them, and get two more. Unfortunately I'm not Dr Who.
Needless to say, I complained, and they gave me a £5 refund. But it really should've been the full £10.
There's something SERIOUSLY wrong with the post in my area. When I send a disc to Lovefilm, they get it next day. When they send a disc to me, it's currently taking a minimum of two weeks. :(
Glad your G+B turned up! :)
This new Twighlight thing...
ugh, didn't really want to see it, and I didn't enjoy it at all

That's because you're not a 13-year-old girl.
Don't you think that Robert Pattinson (sp?) looks like he could be Jedward's older, mildly retarded brother?
Last night I watched Public Enemies. A little slow but decent enough. Much to my personal embarrassment I had convinced myself that John Dillinger was Australian. About half way through I realised that I had somehow got him confused with John Pilger.
As far as Ned Kelly goes I imagine that Mick Jagger did the best 'version' of him.

Heath Ledger was OK - he certainly had a much better beard! I can't remember if Jagger was any good or not.
I went a bit arthouse last night and watched Bruno

Surely that would have been a better option :D
I only got 35 mins into The Spirit before giving up. That's unusual for me, I've seen some real cr@p right though to the end.
Going to watch Stranger than Fiction soon. An excellent movie that shows Will Ferrel can act and Maggie Gyllenhaal looks so fing hot.

Haven't seen it, like you I thought it would be similar to Sin City but there was just something about the trailer which put me right off. I don't think I'll bother!
Went to see "A Serious Man", the new Coen Brothers film yesterday and though it was GREAT! The shots were good, the characters were good, the dialogue was good, and I was laughing all the way through. I really appreciate this more subtle genre of contemporary American comedy, as opposed to all that Will Ferrell/Ben Stiller bullshiteeee.
Definitely recommended!
I'm watching The Hills Have Eyes 2 on Channel 4. Absolutely $%&#ing abysmal!
Paranormal Activity is actually really good.
hmm, I've heard from other friends that it's shiteee and far too much like Blair Witch (in that it looks shitee and has a rubbish storyline).
I hope we all can agree on that Blair Witch Project was utterly rubbish!

No, I liked it! I think by the time most people saw it they already knew too much about it and that spoiled it, but if you forget/ignore all the hype it has a real creepy atmosphere.
But maybe we can all agree that Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows was utterly rubbish? The only good thing to be said about it is that they tried hard to do something different - but it didn't work at all.

I didn't find Four Brothers that bad, but then again you liked Blair Witch Project. Am I starting to see a pattern here?

Just watched Four Brothers starring Marky Mark, sadly without the Funky Bunch. Total rubbish.

You cheeky little ...... Iguess there's some movies we can agree on though :D
Season 4? I thought it was only on 3?
Just watched Idiocracy. Not a movie that'll go down in history.

There's one we agree on! :D
It was a potentially interesting/funny idea, but they did absolutely nothing with it.

It warms my heart that we can agree on this one, Philly. I seem to remember that the Big Lebowski was mentioned a couple of pages back and that you like that too. One more where we agree :D

Yeah, I like the Coen brothers' films a lot, mostly. They have made a few stinkers though.
Well then, it looks like I have work to do! *searches torrents*

Which don't you like?
... and watched Let the Right One In today, easily the best film I've seen in a long time.
Just watched Inglourious Basterds, awesome film!
I've heard from a few people that The Hangover is good. I don't see how that's possible, it looks like a typical shitee american teen comedy film?
hmm, maybe it's worth a go then.
Now, I had just downed a beer and a long island ice tea when I watched it, but I haven't laughed that hard at the cinema in quite some time.hmm, maybe it's worth a go then.
definitely - i give it 4/5
Just watched Donnie Brasco. Don't usually like gangster type movies but this was pretty good :)
I've downloaded Paranormal Activity to watch soon, don't fancy paying for something that looks like the blair witch project!
i watched le divorce the other night, i didn't think it was that great, and it seemed to be fairly racist...
Saw the original Russian Solaris on film four the other night, friggin great!I love Tarkovsky. If you enjoyed "Solaris" and haven't seen "Stalker" then I'd recommend that too.
Just watched The Boat That Rocked. From the look of the adverts it seemed like an average cheesy comedy, but I actually really enjoyed it.

Get used to it Tom, we're all going to have 3-D TV in the next 10 years. Apparently. :?
really enjoyed pineapple express - although it does help to be a bit drunk first
(what's with the spelling?)
(what's with the spelling?)
There's an Italian war film called Inglorious bar-stewards which he took the name from, as far as I'm aware.
Watched Sherlock Holmes at the weekend, was surprisingly good fun.
I saw The Book of Eli today. I enjoyed. nothing like a post-apocalyptic dystopian wasteland to brighten your day :)
is that a good fooking lord? I haven't seen & too be truthful, don't really want to

not a good move, if i can say it... :)
in a surprising change to its usual film schedules, the world is not enough was on ITV2 last night.

i did, definitely...
i meant that it wasn't a particularly good move not to see it, but it's a great movie, in my opinion... ;)
I'm off to see The Road on Wednesday. I may go to see The Book of Eli later in the week.

I saw The Road yesterday. That was really good, a very sad film. I was worried about seeing 2 films with a similar setting being a bit samey, but they're very very different :)

And The Mummy Returns was on earlier that evening!
What's on now? Oh! The World Is Not Enough!
I watched Serenity last night. Why does everything on ITV4 look like they transferred it to VHS before broadcasting it?

I think I'll be on a downer this week then! Watched Children of men last night and that was pretty depressing!
OK, never mind depressing stuff. I just watched Outlander. A science fiction Viking movie. With an old-fashioned "quiet man" hero, not a cheesy comedy one-liner in sight. And it has monsters!
Loved it! :D

Yep, I thoroughly enjoyed outlander :D
Yeah, I like Sophia, she has something about her.
It's not the most original piece of work, lots of clichés (like our hero befriending the silent little kid), it's just one of those "works for me" films. Other people might hate it and I wouldn't particularly blame them.
And sophia miles, which can never be bad.

Lovely to look at but as thick as pig she-ite
Wouldnt be high on my 'to do' list if I did, either ;)
B list celebrities.

did you see Avatar, at last?
I'm watching John Carpenters The Thing at the moment, gruesome!

Ip Man is MAYBE the best kung fu movie i've ever seen.
The Hurt Locker - just watched and now really want to see again but in HD. Can imagine the opening scene looks really good with all the slow motion stuff going on.
Went and saw "The Wolfman" yesterday. In general I do not recommend it.i haven't seen it, but I laughed at this comment.
no comedy one liners? Don't make me post that bond youtube link again! Every movie can be improved by more one-liners, surely?
I quite fancied seeing The Wolfman, but now I've learned it's just a rip off of Twilight: New Moon

HD man, the NEW style!
wait till you get HD channels on freeview, compressed so much they look like SD. WOWSER!

I don't see how you live with yourself for making it the way you did. If I made this movie, I would be ashamed to even admit that I owned it. How can a werewolf be killed with a silver bullet? Better yet, have you saw the transformation of the man that is "supposed" to be the wolf? He sits in some chair and his entire body turns in to some mutated freak.
It almost makes me want to go and see The Wolfman, even though it looks boring as hell. Maybe I'll just watch the 1941 version instead.

It almost makes me want to go and see The Wolfman, even though it looks boring as hell.
It's not boring, can't be really as the running time is only about an hour and forty minutes. In these days of two and half hour summer blockbusters this one is very svelte.
Agreed, 100 minutes can't be too painful. But you still don't recommend it?
Well, I did watch a couple of old lycanthrope movies - Werewolf Of London (1935) and She-Wolf Of London (1946) (which isn't in London and there's no wolf, she- or otherwise  )

More importantly, was the Lady a real fox ! :P
Anyone heard this fuss over the Alice In Wonderland film not being shown in Odeon cinemas? Shame really, I love Tim Burton films (and more importantly Helana Bonham Carter... schwing!), but Odeon is my local...
As we all know, DVD piracy funds terrorism and the drugs trade  .
Because it's 1,000,000 times better seeing a film on the big screen than it is seeing it on DVD.
(Assuming you don't have an audience full of noisy chavs texting their mates)
^ is that the one with denzel washington? i can't remember much about it, but thought it was quite good when i saw it...

yeah, but i'm guessing parents buying a disney movie for their kids aren't going to be too concerned about that.
Yeah, it was decribed as a science fiction thriller.... but it should've said tedious, superficial romance (with voyeuristic and necrophiliac elements :? ) with a bit of science fiction and about 4 seconds of thrills.
That's true - and they can take said kids (and their friends) to the cinema for about £3 each, then they'll buy the DVD anyway and the kids will watch it every day for 2 weeks then forget about it. So Disney still get their DVD money whether people have seen the film in the cinema or not. I still don't see why they're trying to reduce the "theatrical window".
necrophiliac elements.............and about 4 seconds of thrills.
necrophiliac elements.............and about 4 seconds of thrills.
Surely not in the same scene!
Anyway, this evening I am watching Big Daddy and Anger Management - a promise to some dedicated Adam Sandler fans I work with. Hmmm. :?
Earlier tonight i watched komodo vs. cobra
worst film in the world i swear!
quite funny though

On the Sci Fi channel? Did you watch Hydra straight after it? Every bit as bad!
Just watched Eagle Eye. A total load of sh!t.

But why watch Disturbia when you can watch Rear Window?
But why watch Disturbia when you can watch Rear Window?
The reason I mentioned it is that Disturbia is basically a rip-off of Rear Window - but with some tedious teen shenanigans in place of tension and excitement... :|
Not a film but I'm currently addicted to Band of Brothers, just over halfway through now. So good.
I tried to watch Watchmen last night but found it $%&#ing boring, I couldn't even make myself watch it all! The main narration voice is more annoying than Christian Bale's Batman as well.
My expectations weren't high, and I wasn't at all surprised to find it's basically a mega-budget remake of FernGully: The Last Rainforest.....

THANKYOU!!! I was saying the same thing in the pub last night but could not remember the name of the film and my drunken explanations of it didnt make much sense
I really liked Watchmen by the way (though maybe I'd feel differently if I'd read the book, I don't know).
Went to see 'The girl with the dragon tattoo' last night. Absolutely cracking film noir (a genre I love!). Some very uncomfortable scenes in it, that leave you feeling dirty, but all works for the progression of the film. It's long (about 2hrs 30mins) but definitely worth it...go see i...oh and go see the non dubbed version, it'll work out better
I saw the film last summer, at which point I'd never even heard of the books. Thought it was excellent.
I've got the first two books now, but I'm waiting for the third one to come out in paperback before reading them.
Yoidore Tenshi (Drunken Angel): I really should have seen all the Akira Kurosawa films by now but I've missed this one. Enjoyed it a great deal, excellent performances, the death scene is particularly well done. The story focuses on the relationship formed between a middle-aged, alcoholic Doctor and a young gangster who has TB. Strongly recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it.
i've read the books. the 2nd and 3rd one are even better.
i think i'll wait till it comes out on sky (or even dvd), knowing what happens, i want the option to be able to turn it off if i can't take it. EDIT: yeah, i'd definitely want to see the one in swedish with subs. dubbing is just generally total cr@p.
just watched kick ass, which was pretty goodOh cool. I'm going to see it this afternoon. Did you get a trailer for Scott Pilgrim before it?
i saw the first two movies in swedish (with english subs, my swedish is a bit rusty... :)) and liked them, but much less than i expected having read the books...
worth watching though.
I rent from both Blockbuster and Lovefilm and haven't had any problems. I didn't need the volume so stopped the Blockbuster subscription as I found they were slower at supplying new releases, YMMVThe book is muchos better.
Watched Dorian Gray last night, pure garbage - no script, no acting (Colin Firth was OK), no story, no ideas, no direction. How does cr*p like this even get into production?
I'm about half way through 2012
Does that I thought I'd come check the BK boards say anything about what I think of the film?
So the 'Best Disaster Movie' quite literally.I'm about half way through 2012
Does that I thought I'd come check the BK boards say anything about what I think of the film?
I'm surprised you are still awake!
The standard of films this year is appalling, I hope it picks up as the year goes on.
As compensation for Dorian Gray, I watched Nora inu (Stray Dog) another Kurosawa film I hadn't see  and it was excellent.
Saw Kick-Ass this afternoon and liked it. I think that the film was as good as it could be and all the main performances were very good. It's a very slick film with some great lines in it. How it managed to get rated a 15 though is beyond me :?.To be fair, the only really extreme violence is in the two Hitgirl set pieces, and the editing on those is fairly rapid, so they're not that shocking. Compare it to another 15 actioner such as 300 and it's really not bad. The swearing seems shocking, but that's actually as a consequence of there not being that much swearing in the film as a whole.
Over the weekend I have watched:I was disappointed with body of lies, it was a well shot film with solid performances, but effectively there was no story. What was the point of it?
G-Force. It was my daughters choice (honest). Not as bad as I was fearing it would be.
New Moon (the second twilight thingy). Jane's choice, very slow and boring (the film, not Jane).
Body of Lies. My choice, boring.
And tonight I am watching 9. I am also expecting this to be sh!t.
Great weekend for films!

As noted in my earlier response - I watched 9 last night. I was very pleasantly surprised. The animation is beautifully done, the story is pretty decent and the characters are all pretty interesting. The only gripe I have is that it was a little short. I'll be watching again at some point as there was quite a bit going on in some scenes.
Went to see Kick-Ass last night. Was much more enjoyable than I was expecting and a lot more violent. Recommended.
i just checked wiki to make sure i had his name right, how the heck is he 28? he looks old enough to be my dad!
I also watched Avatar last night (on Blu Ray) and was more impressed than I thought I would be. It's a longish film but it really didn't feel that long.
I want to see Hot Tub Time Machine :DYou really don't! I mostly like those retarded comedy things, but that was just a blur

Haven't watched in HD, but I didn't think it would be good, and thought it would drag on. Turned out to be very good.I want to see Hot Tub Time Machine :DYou really don't! I mostly like those retarded comedy things, but that was just a blur
Saw Iron Man 2 last night and enjoyed it. I don't think it's as good as the first one but it's very entertaining. The story's fine but the main performances are all very watchable, helped by a very witty screenplay, and the effects look very good. Good solid blockbuster fun.
I watched Zombieland yesterday. Good performances, looks great and I liked it a lot, although it did drag a bit in the middle (not good for a film less than 90 minutes long!).

yeah, good film and the cameo by bill murray was funny - but did slow everything down quite a bit
Just back from Iron Man 2, I didn't think it was as good as the first movie, but a redheaded scarlett johansson made it worth my £7.50. I'd do some very naughty things to that lady.
Observe and Report. What a load of f*cking sh!t. A complete waste of 100 minutes and a part of my life that I will never get back. Ever.

Noted.
Must admit I'd never even heard of it....
Has anybody else seen "The Human Centipede" ?
It's quite an experience....
Just watched my very first Blu-ray! :D
Just watched my very first Blu-ray! :DAh your high-def cherry has been popped. My first time was with "2001 A Space Odyssey". Not as good as watching it on 70mm at the flicks but really pretty good. I love high-def!
The Black Shield Of Falworth with Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh.
It was my absolute favourite film when I was a little kid, and I've seen it loads of times but never in glorious Cinemascope. Totally fantastic! :)

Have you got yourself a Blu-Ray player Philly?

Yes, I saw it last year! Half the time I was thinking "why would anyone make this and why am I watching it?", but despite that I really enjoyed the performance of the mad doctor guy.
We also had a Q&A with the director, who seemed quite a likeable chap.
Just watched my very first Blu-ray! :D

I have indeed, multi-region too. So suddenly I'm interested in DVD review sites all over again, trying to work out what I want to replace (and if it's available on Blu-ray yet!).

Are you into John Carpenter, Philly? I was watching The Thing on blu ray last night, and its one of the ones that really benefits from the blu ray transfer. I'd certainly recommend it.
Big +1 on this. It's one of my girlfriend and my favourites so we got it last week and the transfer is indeed great.trying to work out what I want to replace (and if it's available on Blu-ray yet!).

Have you got EFNY on Blu-ray too? I've seen reviews saying it's a poor transfer, but it looks pretty decent in the comparison on DVD Beaver.

Is that an import? I didn't realise it was available..
The Road - went into this with some trepidation because I really hated John Hillcoat's previous film, The Proposition. But it was very good, very powerful.... very bleak. Not sure I want to see it again.
The acting, from the boy in particular, was very good. I'm not sure which part I found most depressing - the most disturbing part was when he opened the cellar in the big house.
i saw seventeen again the other night.
44 Inch Chest - I'm not keen on the whole Mockney thing and this was one I wasn't impressed with. Very stage play-like, most of the action takes place in one room. The acting is good (cracking cast) but little happens. As usual with Mockey stuff, every other word is f**k or c**t. Joanne Whalley is still hot
Office space is a great film, very Dilbert-like,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFS06Z0CCpk
Coraline - Good animated film with wonderfully imaginative visuals. Its a kids movie but would be too scary for small ones. I felt the story was a bit lightweight and confused, it felt pieced-together but worth seeing for fans of the genre.
Nowhere Boy - Biopic about John Lennon's early life. I'm a Beatles fan so would enjoy anything about them and I like this. The main performance from Aaron Johnson was amazing. He has that 'magnetic' element when on screen, you can't look away.
i saw seventeen again the other night.
By choice? :P
yeah, watched all of the second series. I thought they were mucking about quite a bit, not sure which direction to take it. 1 really awfull singing episode i really didnt enjoy (not like 'once more with feeling' in buffy). They did do a brilliant episode with time travelling robocop that i found rather moving. i enjoyed last coule as well.
Watched The Antichrist the other night.
Holy Mother!!!
Still having flashbacks...
:(
24 ending was pretty good, definitely open for another series or film if they decide to milk it for all it's worth
Grave of the Fireflies - Great animated film, I've been waiting a long tine to see it and I highly recommended to anyone who hasn't seen it. The story is of a young Japanese boy and his little sister during the end of WWII. Heartbreaking story and you will cry
:?:
i just watched it. loved it... and thought the line fit my predicament quite well. i was also hoping someone else may have seen it and picked up on the meaning
Cloverfield.
Not bad at all actually - the first 20 minutes were pretty annoying though.
true blood is starting again soon (series 3 airs on the 13th), best theme tune ever. complete cheese but complimented by enough sex and violence that i always want to watch it
That's not on Sky yet, is it? Couldn't see it anywhere, and I'd hate to missherit.
Crazy Heart: Excellent film with an amazing performance from Jeff Bridges. The story is none too original. Washed up, alcoholic country single trying to get back on his feet but (much like The Wrestler) pulls off the trick to produce a great film.
I just watched Where The Wild Things Are - not what I expected (although I'm not sure what I was expecting) but rather wonderful.
Yesterday I saw a preview screening of a horror called The Final which is coming out in August. Utter bollocks.
Watched Moon tonight. Very strange and depressing. Not sure if I liked it.
Watched Moon tonight. Very strange and depressing. Not sure if I liked it.
I liked Moon. I found it very sad, but not depressing - and the ending is uplifting, in a very small way.
i liked it too. but did anyone happen to watch the preview for it on sky anytime - the bit where they start playing a sort clip of the film? the buggers decided to pick a clip that gave away the whole plot. not that its hard to figure out, but still - not on!
Speaking of films, today is the day that Marty McFly travelled to in a tweaked DeLorian...
against my better judgement i watched a little bit of van wilder 2. it was appalling.

Back To The Future 'hoax' - we confess!
http://www.totalfilm.com/news/back-to-the-future-hoax-we-confess/
Not the Messiah: Eric Idle's comic oratorio (I had to look up ) pastiche of Handel's Messiah based on The Life of Brian (IMO the funniest film ever made). I'm a big Python fan so I was always going to like this but it does start quite slow and the humour is often low key. However I though the music was great with 'We Love Sheep' getting big laughs from me. If you dislike Opera or The Python... avoid.
yeah, i found myself watching the start of misfits the other day and it was completely not what i expected so i am going to give it a proper go
Micmacs (Micmacs à tire-larigot) - French language film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen, Amelie) combination of oddball farce and heist caper is just too whimsical for its own good. Lovely visuals but the constant wacky-street-performance acting would be more suitable in a silent movie.
I really enjoyed Inception last night. Great vfx (but not overdone or tacky) and a good storyline :) Everyone in the cinema was like "what?!" at the ending, haha
edit - watched it again tonight as my parents wanted to go! Story is a lot easier to digest and make sense of 2nd time round.
Recent films would be Sherlock and Predators
I was really surprised by the first - I saw a trailer and thought 'since when was sherlock holmes a martial arts expert action hero?' and expected it to be terrible, but Downey pulled of the ultra-intelligent but detached from reality and basically nuts character really well, and I enjoyed it a lot.
The english dubbing is awful though, should have found a version with subtitles really.
speaking of sherlock holmes, did anyone watch the new series of it on the bbc last week? i thought it was pretty good.
oh, and do NOT watch made of honor. it actually makes those l'oreal adverts look like some of patrick dempsey's better work.
speaking of sherlock holmes, did anyone watch the new series of it on the bbc last week? i thought it was pretty good.
Yeah, I liked it!
I kind of expected to hate it, and I didnt like the text notations of clues and, well, texts and stuff, but it had enough redeeming features that I enjoyed it.
Now let's hope they can maintain the standard, and it doesn't turn out to be yet another series which bores me after two weeks...

I liked it too (a rare agreement with Mark! ).
I wasn't at all sure about the modernisation aspect, and Benedict Cumberbatch, good though he is, seemed kind of an "obvious" choice as Holmes. But I really liked Martin Freeman's performance - he's amusing, but not at all in the buffoonish Nigel Bruce "I say Holmes, what the Dickens, eh?" mould. His Watson seems like a man with real character who actually brings something to the partnership. Good work! :)
Now let's hope they can maintain the standard, and it doesn't turn out to be yet another series which bores me after two weeks...
Shaolin Soccer - probably the funniest film I've seen in a long time
Sadly I watched the 'remake' of Clash of the Titans last night. What a complete load of sh!t.
Why is Sam Worthington getting all these big roles?
Yeah, I liked it!

I watched it again last week. Now have you seen Kung Fu Hustle? :D

Nope - is it similar?
on the special edition DVD i think they have the option of playing the scenes in chronological order - never done it though, i am worried it will just be an average film with the scenes being in the right order
I'm so, so late with this, but I watched 2001: A Space Odyssey last night. Really enjoyed it even though I wasn't originally in the mood for a slow/weird film! The effects and camera work are really good, can't figure out how some of it was done still so I'm gonna have to have a rewatch some time. I have no idea what it was really about though.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Loved it, excellent murder mystery Swedish language film. A soon-to-be-imprisoned journalist teams up with a damaged hacker to solve a family secret. I highly recommend it to those how haven't seen it.

Alien super-power seeds the universe with Monoliths which identify biological traits that can lead to intelligence and enhance them, guiding animal life toward spacefaring civilisation.
The ones the apes at the start discovered prompted their advancement into humans, the one on the moon was a development marker that showed a species had developed spaceflight and the ability to find it when buried and the one near saturn/jupiter (depending whether its the book or film) was to accelerate humans to some next step in assisted evolution.
HAL went nuts because of some cliched 'does not compute' contradiction between being programmed to be honest, but follow instructions, but then being ordered to withold all the information behind the Discovery mission from the crew ('he' was the only 'crew member' that knew everything about it with the discovery on the moon and the signal (noise the monolith made) to saturn/jupiter). The only way out that was allowed to him with all that was to kill the crew, apparently.
Needless to say, the book/s are better, despite the film being as good as it is. If you know whats going on its all there to figure out, but theres more depth and discussion in the books.
Can't wait for the US remake.
Not.
Although to be fair, with David Fincher directing it'll probably be OK. Just unnecessary.

yeah, i mean what's the point?
I believe the first one, with the apes, was planted there when the aliens visited earth for the second time - the first being before multicellular life arose (obviously that detail isnt in the film, and I'm not certain its in the first book either, but I think it is) and they recognised the potential for intelligence in the apes.
Then the one on the moon is just to check that we've made it that far. It sends a signal to the one round jupiter to activate, and so invites us to follow the signal. Its a series of qualifications; make it this far and you've proved youre ready for the next step. That one takes a bit of adding up from just the film I'll grant you - I didnt see that till I read it, but it is there to be seen/inferred.

i have not read the books, but i clearly remember watching the film as a rather young child. It stayed with me for a while in dreams and got mixed up with other stuff like it does when you see stuff young- but the monoliths as markers, or even catalysts of development always seemed clear.
it probably was not till i was 17 or 18 that i watched it again, and seen it a few times since
The real answer, sadly, is that most cinema-goers aren't willing to read subtitles. :(

yeah it sucks. I mean I'm interested in languages anyway, so i like it, but not willing to read? lolwut?
which reminds me, what can be quite fun is going to see an english-language film in a non-english-speaking country which is subtitled. You always get to laugh a couple of seconds before the rest of the audience. Makes you feel superior  well either that or you get punched for spoiling it for everyone else
Just watched Gamer.

I'm afraid the good ideas, such as they were, were completely buried under all the stupidity, annoying choppy editing and ludicrous hammy acting (and God, Kyra Sedgwick is ugly).
I was so appalled by the film I went and read some reviews. It seemed to pick up some praise for the "game-like" quality of the action scenes. That may be true - I'm not a gamer - but I found them so completely and utterly uninvolving I was very, very, tempted to fast-forward or just switch off altogether.
I suppose I should've known what to expect from the directors of Crank....
Well, there you go, horses for courses. I haven't seen the second Crank film yet, but I really hated the first one.
I watched an entirely different style of film last night, Giuseppe Tornatore's psychological thriller La Sconosciuta (aka The Unknown Woman). Absolutely brilliant.
i haven't seen either of the cranks. i generally work on the basis that if statham is in a film, that i won't want to see it
but juliette lewis now has man clevage

Man cleavage? :?
Talking of stupid action films, I watched Taken a while ago. And although completely stupid, i thoroughly enjoyed it. Even though Liam Neeson didn't have a beard in it.
Is Liam Neeson only good when he has a beard? That's a rule-of-thumb I apply to Ryan Reynolds movies.

He has a beard in:
Blade: Trinity
The Amityville Horror
Smokin' Aces
Wolverine (I think... maybe not)
I know those aren't exactly great, but they're a damn sight better than Van Wilder, Just Friends or The Proposal.
I haven't seen Definitely, Maybe, but I see it's a romcom so it's pretty much a dead cert I wouldn't like it. :P
I did like Adventureland, and he's beardless in that.... it's not a hard and fast rule, just a guideline!
Karate Kid was OK, improved for me because I recognised the locations (and even some of the people :o ). Personally found it a bit strange watching 12 year olds beating each other senseless.

Yeah, I quickly averted my eyes after I started reading those posts, but I couldn't avoid all of it.... :|yeah same here. Don't worry wez (and Lew), you didn't mean it, and I'm sure I've posted the odd spoiler which I didn't realise was a spoiler either. I'll be more careful in future, though. :)
It'll probably be quite a while before I see it, though, and I watch so many films I tend to forget stuff quite easily. So my mind will hopefully be blank by then!
I've just watched Gomorrah, about the criminal activities of the Camorra in southern Italy. Powerful stuff!
Just finished Lourdes a French language religious satire. It was absolutely amazing, just my type of film. The acting is great, very natural and subtle, no show boating. The script is sparse which emphasise the odd behaviour of the characters. It also features Léa Seydoux, who is very easy on the eye, http://www.imdb.com/media/rm3955394816/ch0157116
What is wrong with card counting anyway? :?
tbh i think it would be hard to play cards regularly and not start thinking about the cards that have gone before and the cards you dont have... its not a big jump to actually be 'counting' them

You, sir, are a man of taste! :D I saw Lourdes at the LFF last year and loved it to bits.
You called it a satire, and I saw it that way too - in the gentlest possible way - but I think the film actually leaves you completely free to form your own impression. If you're sceptical about "miracles" it's satire, but I imagine a true believer could watch it and see it completely differently. Or you could see it almost as a documentary! And the ending manages to be happy and achingly sad at the same time.
I dont know why poeple dont like matt damon. He cant act most people under the table.
legion was utter pants. The trailer was brilliant though... so the film must have a total of about 3 good minutes in it
i hate when that happens with a trailer. dodgeball was the same, all the best jokes were in the trailer.
Centurion which was rubbish and the really annoying thing is it would have been easy to massively improve it. The dialogue is some of the worst I've ever heard, much of it unintentional funny. The many fight scenes are realistically gore filled but are boring. The parallels draw with current campaigns are clumsy and the ending is tacked on.
Watched Shaun Of The Dead on Blu-ray last night, I'll probably follow up with Hot Fuzz this evening.
legion was utter pants. The trailer was brilliant though... so the film must have a total of about 3 good minutes in itReally hope you like Scott Pilgrim. I spent 18 months working on it and I think it's the best film I've been on in the decade or so I've been in visual effects. Edgar Wright has made something special with this and I genuinely think it's unlike anything else out there stylistically.
looking forward to seeing scott pilgrim, just reread all the (comic) books again and from what i have seen it seems like edgar wright has got the style spot on. hopefully it will translate well to film.. I mean, watchmen was so close to being spot on but it didnt make it a brilliant film
It's always a bad sign if a trailer is (a)very long or (b)seems to be giving away a lot of plot points, especially bits which are obviously from near the end of the film.
It pretty much guarantees you've just watched all the good bits and you may as well not bother with the film.

Is that the Neil Marshall one? He showed so much promise with his first two films, then got ludicrously self-indulgent (far too early in his career) on Doomsday, and it sounds like he's gone wrong again. I hope he gets back on track. :?
Just watching Shaun Of The Dead
Just watching Shaun Of The Dead
In a couple of hours, I'll be driving down to London and staying just around the corner from where it was filmed. I might have to go and get myself a Cornetto (again) from the shop.
There's another road in the local area that is due to be closed for a film shoot soon (I think Mr Pegg lives on this road). So maybe they're doing something else at the minute.
I watched Extract yesterday, it is billed at a follow up to Office Space but isn't in the same league but is way better than Idiocracy. The set up is opposite to Office Space, the Boss is a good guy and the workers are idiots. There are quite a few funny moments and the performances are good but the plot is a bit jumbled and has too many concurrent story lines. Feels more like a pilot for a TV show than a film.
Idiocracy was a mediocre comedy, good horror: too plausible!
The Expendables was brilliant!
Just brilliant seeing them all together & playing as an ensemble... can't wait for a sequel.
And also 'Kelly Brooke, naked, in 3D', is there anything wrong with that sentence?
I've never been a fan of Kelly Brook. I really don't see what all the fuss is about.
She seems to be getting a bit desperate recently though. Did you see that story where she went to a party at the Playboy mansion (hosted by that horrible 85-year-old creep Hugh Hefner) and she was just strolling around the place in a white negligee having her photo taken.... I just thought my god woman, have you no self-respect?

Yeah, there is.... it's Brook not Brooke. :P
I've never been a fan of Kelly Brook. I really don't see what all the fuss is about.
I think she's a fine looking girl, but she has has zero talent of any kind so - to be fair - she's made a career out of the only thing she's got going for her.

And that differs to most of todays 'celebrities' how? :?
Atleast with Kelly Brook it's an attractive package; not so if it was Jordan or Kerry Katona etc!
To tie it all together & sum up my opinion of Kelly...
I loved the way Kelly Brook dumped Jason Statham for Billy Zane (Titanic) when she thought she could snare a "BIG" hollywood star....
Judged that wrong didn't you, you stupid bimbo!!!

(I know too much about Kelly Brook, don't I? :? )
jason statham with a bimbo , ouchh I feel like I don't like him anymore . :P Oh well he hasnt so much luck with women in movies so can only wish him more in real life. :D
I think he's doing OK with Rosie... :? :o

i just watched the new transformers (was on sky). Is it just me or was it fairly terrible? This is from a total transformers fanboy back in the 80s when i was a kid, so if anything I wanted to like it.

I haven't seen it, but if it's anything like the first* one, it must be utterly terrible.
(* Michael Bay version, not the animated one)
I went to see it in the cinema. It got boring, peaked about halfway through and sort of coasted for another hour or so.
I watched Gamer last night. Now I wasn't really expecting it to be any good, but it really was absolutely awful (and this is coming from someone who usually likes pointless action films). No redeeming features apart from the glitchy/gamey editing style which I quite liked in the action scenes.
probably one of the ten worst films I've ever seen.
probably one of the ten worst films I've ever seen.
even worser* than Lost in Translation?
A remake of I Spit On Your Grave sounds good. The original was banned as a video nasty so I never saw it. I heard it was really good.

The original is coming out on Blu-ray next month, it's still cut by about 3 minutes though!
Even the remake, which I'd say is a lot more "mainstream" (in as much as a rape/revenge movie can ever be mainstream!) was cut by 45 seconds.
The last trilogy I watched back to back was Back to the Future. Great stuff (IMO).
i've never seen the earlier batman films... i keep meaning to watch them but always find something to watch instead... (seen the newer ones)

I just ordered the Batman box set - it was as cheap as getting just the first two individually. So now I'm going to be brave and try to watch Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. :?
Try Batman and (especially) Batman Returns, the two directed by Tim Burton.
I always thought the Tim Burton ones terrible. But then I'm a geek and like the comics, and I also loathe every film Tim Burton has made aside from Big Fish and Beetlejuice, so I was likely to find them a chore.
I'm off to see Scott Pilgrim tomorrow, really looking forward to that as I've not heard a bad thing about it yet :D
Did anyone watch the new episode of The Inbetweeners last night?
I think I may have cracked a rib from laughing.

Just got back from Scott Pilgrim, absolutely awesome! Loved the vfx/editing style and it was just pure entertainment. After seeing it I need 3 things::)

-ramona flowers

I agree with your 3 item list too.
ramona flowers?
I just watched a "double bill" of Korean horror movies I bought on DVD ages ago and never got round to watching:I'm assuming the new Red Shoes isn't a remake of this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040725/) one then :)? Can't say Moira Shearer ever did much for me but couldn't really call her horrific either.
Cello (absolute rubbish) and The Red Shoes (very good indeed).
I watched the Japanese film Audition last night and was massively unimpressed by it.
I'd heard from a few friends that are into Extreme Asian Cinema that ranted and raved about how great a film this is and how far it pushes things etc, but it didn't do much for me.
I also have Itchi The Killer to watch as well, so hopefully I'll enjoy that 1 more
I'm a fan of Audition, but as with all "extreme" movies it either pushes your buttons or it doesn't, I suppose.
There's a bit in Ichi the Killer which grossed me out so much I actually blacked out in the cinema. That's only happened to me three times in my life (very embarrassing).
I really liked audition as well. I can see how you could get bored by it initially, and it is somewhat weird in places, but the wonderful increasing sense of wrongness throughout the movie is great. Apart from the finally though I wouldn't really class it as extreme, certainly not by modern standards.
Nooo! I loved Lost In Translation!
Nooo! I loved Lost In Translation!
Me too!
I'm waiting for Philly to jump in on this one.
Perhaps. Never seen that.
If lost in translation has incest, necrophilia and a bizarre preoccupation with feces then yeah, I suppose so.
I suppose with Audition, if youre after gore porn (which I never am; not my thing at all, dont really know why I watched it) then its quite tame, but it is pretty utterly and totally $%&#ed up, considering whatsherfaces traits and habits.
Itchi was just cartoonsih nonesense start to finish. Bored me senseless.
Since we're on the topic of extreme asian films, Visitor Q is probably the most $%&#ed up film I've seen. If you can stand to watch it, which I really dont recommend you do. The only thing you'll get out of it is a couple of hours not back. Its not gory or anything its just disgusting and leaves you going 'huh? wtf was the point in that?'.
I've owned Itchi The Killer for about 4 years and not watched it yet!

yeah, sounds almost identical.

Brow, watch the "trilogy": Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance.
(I should be getting my Blu-ray box set any day now. :) )
Hmmmm....so so.
See, the A Team to me was about these absurd characters doing absurd things.
It gets that and does that but I was really attached to the actors that were the characters as well - its one of those cases where they arent really exctricable.
So - face was good
BA was actually alright, I was surprised
Hannibal was rubbish, he didnt have the proper happy go lucky unconcernedness.
There was nothing terribly wrong with what merdoch did or said, but he just wasnt right.
Forgot to add to this thread a few days ago. I've now seen Scott Pilgrim vs the World. I loved it, Jane wasn't too sure.I think the film can be a bit Marmite in nature just because it's so different but everyone seems to agree on Ramona Flowers. :)
And Ramona Flowers, I liked her rather a lot :)
I quite liked The Hangover, better than I expected but not amazing. I also watched Super Troopers last night. Hated it the first time I tried to watch it (had to switch off after about half hour) but found it a lot funner this time meownd :P
Not film but I believe Dexter S5 started in America last night!
If we're talking Zooey-alikes, I prefer Katy Perry
If we're talking Zooey-alikes, I prefer Katy Perry
Finally saw John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle over the weekend. Wow, what a movie. I can see why people call it the best crime film ever made. Comfortably as good as anything Scorsese has ever done and for 1950 pretty much peerless I'd think (maybe allowing for Touch of Evil). If you like films like Treasure of the Sierra Madre (another Huston movie) then I think you'll love this. The story, the human struggle, the dialogue, the film noir styling and Marilyn Monroe make it one of the best movies I've ever seen. I'm pretty disgusted with myself that it's taken until now for me to get around to seeing it.
Oh, and Philly, and I'm glad the Blu-Ray of Black Narcissus is up to snuff. Jack Cardiff was one of the true greats of cinematography and deserves it. All of which means I have to watch The African Queen ASAP. John Huston and Jack Cardiff working on the same movie sounds like dynamite to me.
Speaking of Jack Cardiff, when are they ever going to release The Vikings on Blu-ray? Tony Curtis tribute maybe?Yeah, too right. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for that too.
Anyone seen Buried yet? I fancy giving it a watch as it looks good, but none of my friends want to go and watch "a film about a man in a box" :?
-ish. :|
More like stubble, to be honest.
Obviously the film would've been that bit better if he had a proper beard.
(I don't mean ScarJo, there's no truth in those rumours... )
The Hurt Locker: Good film but not as good as some reviews, lacked a little depth for me.
Not films but I've finally got into The Wire and quite liking it now :)
I watched Visitor Q. Completely $%&#ed up, but I didn't really find it all that disturbing... in fact there's something curiously likeable about it. :|
(In fact, it's rather less disturbing than The Only Way Is Essex, which I stumbled into on ITV2 after watching the film. :? )
Diary of a Mad Black Woman - I'm not sure why I put this on my rental list :? Definitely in my top 10 worst films, only made it through about 35 min. Bizarre combination of revenge, romance, christianity and Eddie Murphy-est (unfunny) comedy, absolutely terrible.
Oh god, Katy Perry.
Call me a prude, but I thought she was supposed to be a recording artist. In fact her "career" seems to consist of being photographed as often as humanly possible, displaying her baps in a disparate variety of outfits seemingly borrowed from a much smaller person.

As I said, call me a prude.....
I'm afraid I have a bit of a puritanical streak, probably the result of a religious upbringing (even though I'm now very much an unbeliever).
I find it hard to admire someone who's supposed to be an "actress" or "singer" but is actually nothing more than a professional celebrity, self-publicising in the cheapest way possible. Same applies to Kelly Brook. They're really no different from Jordan, Jodie Marsh or some random slapper from Series 5 of Big Brother. I wish our lowest-common-denominator society would stop rewarding such people.
Sorry, taking it all too seriously, I know...

Is that of those Tyler Perry films? Not something I have any intention of watching, ever.
Fanboys - I loved this but be warned it is very geeky. Road movie where a group of Star Wars fan travel to Skywalker Ranch to steal The Phantom Menace. I think fans of IT Crowd and Big Bang Theory will like this film, there is a crazy amount of 'in' jokes but the film is uneven and sections are very tacked-on.
Yesterday I saw Let Me In, the US remake of Let The Right One In..... I was dreading it a bit, because I love the original.
But they did a great job! They've changed a few characters and plot points, the overall tone is a little more serious, but there's no crass "Hollywood-isation" of the central story and the two young leads are excellent.
No? I'll bet the podgy old ugly local crowd are either not in it, or replaced by handsome youngsters?
^ I actually fell asleep in the cinema, which I never do.
On TV I'm really enjoying Mark Gatiss' history of horror.
old boy is good - awesome in fact.
it is one of those films that changes the meaning of words. words like 'octopus' or 'hamer' never quite seem the same
sympathy for Mr V does not quite do it for me
and thats after being called mr V for a long time. My wife says watch infernal affairs because its awesome... but she is also laughing at me for writing this
Law Abiding Citizen - Average (at best!) revenge thriller with poor acting and bizarre, illogical plot.
Infernal Affairs is great, much better than Scorsese's overrated remake The Departed.
Law Abiding Citizen - Average (at best!) revenge thriller with poor acting and bizarre, illogical plot.
Kick-Ass - I must be the last geek on Earth to see it  Loved it, really fun movie with some excellent action sequences that's more than just another comic book adaptation. Oddly, it dumps all originality in the final act, becoming very conventional and (for me) unsatisfying. If you haven't see it, don't let that put you off. This is a very cool film.
I loved Kick-Ass. Not as much as I liked Scott Pilgrim...... though.:) That was my feeling too which isn't to say that I didn't enjoy Kick-Ass a lot.
Just watched Let The Right One In. Really good! I can't imagine why they're doing/have done an American remake though, I can't see how they'll improve it?
They certainly haven't improved on it, but the remake is very, very good in it's own right.
I have the original Japanese version of The Ring I might watch later, might as well watch something scary seeing as it's halloween weekend
We finally have a proper hd setup at home now, any blurays in particular I should get which are gonna show off how good the HD telly and 5.1 are? :P
The Road - Ultra bleak film about a Father and son trying to survive a post-apocalyptic future. I love when films are grim but even I was thinking 'this better end well' and I normally hate happy ending. Excellent film, don't watch if your feeling down.
I left The Road feeling very empty indeed (not hungry, emotionally). The only other film of recent times that left me feeling like that was Children of Men (although not quite a s empty!)
Just watched Fight Club for the first time in ages, absolutely love this film :D Although perhaps quite ironic that I watched it on our brand new home cinema system
Just watched Juno. Not bad, but I don't see what all the fuss was about.
Iron Man 2 - I was disappointed with this film IIRC it got good reviews, for me the first film was so much better. Much of the action set pieces were just CG models fighting each other. It was a bit like watching someone else playing a video game.
Das Experiment - German language film from 2001 based (in part) on the 'Stanford prison experiment'. It was quite good with strong performances, an above average and competently made film just lacking a bit of 'something special'. Oddly the film has dated quickly, the music cue sounded like the film was 20+ years old.
Just watched Juno. Not bad, but I don't see what all the fuss was about.
Daybreakers - I've nothing to say about this film other than it's absolute utter garbage!
Legion Well I had been warned.... love the concept of avenging angels descending on Earth, but it ends up as a lame, dull hybrid of The Terminator and Assault On Precinct 13. Waste of a good cast too. The old Christopher Walken film, The Prophecy, did the same sort of thing, but much better.
also watched Gabriel and much preferred the direction, but the twist at the end wasn't as unexpected as it could have been
Really liking zombie stuff at the minute after watching The Walking Dead (however, this is going downhill fast - episode 4 is shiteee). What are some good zombie/apocalypse-type films? :)
I'll watch anything with zombies in even if it's shitee
I even enjoyed 'Flight of the Living Dead'
Welcome to the wonderful world of Blu-ray! :DAnd what a beautiful world it is.
I'm guessing with that ending there'll be a Kick Ass 2?
Gamer was rubbish! Not even Dexter could save it :P Speaking of which, I have just acquired the season finale, way too excited for this haha
It was never going to be Oscar winning material, but there's worser films out there imo!
Gamer was rubbish! Not even Dexter could save it :P
Yep - seasons 1,4 & 5 are great tv :D
The Tourist - I thought this would be at least a bit better than it was. It was ok for a bit of fun but the chemistry between the two leads was cr@p and I predicted the ending as soon as Depp's character was introduced.
A Serbian Film.. I'm not really sure why me and my mates decided to watch this, but it was very, very wrong. Yet it was really well made with good dialogue in places, and nice lighting.

Did you see it uncut, Tom, or the BBFC certified version?

Yep it was the uncut version. I think I have an idea which scenes they'd probably take out!
*downloads Black Swan*
Has anyone seen Tron Legacy yet and if so any good for a mindless action film with 3D fun bits?
i got a copy of black swan the other day - just flicking through to check quality i stopped at natalie portman masturbating, mila kunis going down on natalie portman and two other inetersting scenes... may have to put this on my cinema list ;)

The missus asked me to download this, and I have down but we've no watched it yet. I thought it was just gonna be a dull ballet biopic, albiet with bonnie lassies in it, and couldn't understand why Elaine wanted me to get it.
All makes sense now.
scott pilgrim is canadian - the jokes are a bit flat and understated ;)
On the TV front, I've just finished Dollhouse - Season Two. The first season was promising but I can see why they cancelled it. There's a few good episodes but too samey, the endless personality swapping become dull.
did you catch the 13th episodes of each series - they made it much better for me. i know i missed the 13th of the first series as it wasnt aired with the rest of the series - but i think they are on the DVD's
I've also got a box set of Band of Brothers. Has anyone on here seen it?
The box set. It's in a nice tin box.

Robin Hood - Ridley Scott's version of the well worn tail is full of detail, acting and design but it's dry, long-winded and dull. The film deals with the years leading up to the point at which most films start. It's like a Robin Hood prequel but without the fun. The best parts of the film (apart from the general attention to detail) are the action sequences which are all high quality. Crowe's accent is rubbish (switching between Midland/Scottish/Irish in the same sentence) but it's not the big issue spoiling the film that some have reported. An Average film.
Makes a good point about how critical reviews are often hugely exaggeration... like my recent comment about The Twilight Saga: New Moon being poison. That's me told :?
The Lovely Bones - Awkward mix of serial killer suspense and sentimental family drama with poor results. The acting is pretty good but the material isn't. Very unsatisfying 'happy' ending, avoid.
The Last Airbender.I agree that the movie was a complete disappointment, considering that the show is actually good, to be geared more for children. They choose the wrong director for this and I was expecting them to do a lot more with the material.
During which I fell asleep.
I read that Lynne Ramsay was lined up to direct a version of it at one point - I'm sure her style would've been infinitely more appropriate.

That could have been interesting, Ratcatcher is a classic.
2 episodes into Boardwalk Empire now. Really enjoying it :)
You should give it a go when its on, definitely worth watching. Steve Buscemi is awesome.
haha, I started watching it to fill the void as neither House or Fringe have been on Sky 1 for ages :(
I think it's just old ones on Universal. And I thought his accent was good!
I think it's just old ones on Universal. And I thought his accent was good!
o_O
It's like a caricature of a stereotype of a parody
That's one of the main reasons I don't watch House.
His accent makes me feel uncomfortable, almost embarrassed. Maybe it isn't really that bad, but I spent so many years hearing him sounding posh in British programmes.... I can only hear the phoniness when he talks American.
Plus I mean we always complain about Americans doing "british" accents... we can't really complain too much when we ship hugh laurie over there with one like that
in other news, chuck is amazing.
I always found it interesting that a super-patriotic country like the USA is so totally accepting of foreign actors playing Americans.
I've never heard anyone complain about Batman being British, the Joker Australian, Indiana Jones having a Scottish father, even Jack Bauer being Canadian!
Season 3 doesn't really get going until "Chuck Vs The Beard", and then gets very good very quickly, before losing it's way a bit until a great finale. Season 4 is a bit up and down, but there've been some very good ones so far.in other news, chuck is amazing.
should probably clarify this, having watched a bit more- the first two series of chuck are amazing. The third series is still pretty good, but nowhere near as good as the first two (unless it gets better... I'm about halfway through currently). :( If it's not broke, don't fix it, comes to mind :(
I always found it interesting that a super-patriotic country like the USA is so totally accepting of foreign actors playing Americans.
and yet when it comes to british tv shows they seem to have to remake them before they can accept them! 2 recent victims are shameless and being human. I can see why they redid shameless for american audiences - and the changes seem relatively appropriate... then with being human they took it and did a scene for scene copy!!!

just watched harry brown - i wondered if it was sponsored by the daily mail! its well made but aims to be shocking just for the sake of it from the opening scene - which adds little to the story other than to set you on edge. Then it continues to completely vilify kids who hang around on street corners.
not trying to ignore the shiteee that happens in real life - but the film annoyed me. it does try to take some of the blame away from the youths and put it on their dodgy upbringing - but its an underdeveloped theme. He 'saves' a female junky in hollywood style, no questions asked of her right to be saved - then leads a sexually abused male 'hoodie' that clearly needs help to his death! I was sure this point in the film was going to be when he actually got to understand what led the gang members to that point and be able to actually help one of them out with a 'not the worse, and has clearly suffered enough' character
I know what you mean Wez. But tbh I'm sure we could do without most kids who do hang around on street corners/in underpasses :P
Just watched Men Who Stare At Goats.
Awesome film. Really great.
Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans - Absolutely amazing film, the script isn't up to much but a stunning central performance (Nicolas Cage) and excellent support (Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer) topped off with brilliant direction (Werner Herzog) make this a must see film.
in general I love films with very restricted settings and locations.
Exam - I read Philly's post and thought: This is a movie for me and spot on. Really enjoyed it. Reminds me a lot of a Spanish movie called "el método" which also is really great.
The Illusionist (L'illusionniste) - Based on a script by Jacques Tati this is an animated feature of the very highest quality. Set in 1959 and with almost no dialogue, the visuals and attention to detail are just wonderful. Full of subtle humour and gentle observations - like watching cinema from another era... a must see film.

Have you seen (another Spanish film) Fermat's Room? I think you might like it!
Mega Piranha - Tiffany (yes that Tiffany, of "I Think We're Alone Now") plays a scientist(!) battling a shoal of piranha which have somehow mutated so they've grown to the size of buses and are able to leap hundreds of feet through the air....
Terrible acting, terrible FX and Tiffany couldn't even be bothered to go on a diet to film her role. I wish I could say it's so bad it's good, but it's just boring rubbish. Makes Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus starring Deborah Gibson (yes that Deborah Gibson) seem like a work of genius.
Philly, next on your list has to be Stonehenge Apocalypse, I saw it in HMV, but haven't had the nerve to pick it up yet, could be the worst film ever, or just one of the worst.
That "Mega Piranha" movie is just something for me as I've formed an "Animal Disaster Movie Club" with some collegues from work.
Are they actually any good? (maybe that's a stupid question)
That "Mega Piranha" movie is just something for me as I've formed an "Animal Disaster Movie Club" with some collegues from work.
You'll be wanting to check out Sharktopus, Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, Mega Shark vs. Crocosaurus and Mega Python vs. Gatoroid as well, then.
No, they're complete and utter garbage.
But sometimes I like to watch films which require zero mental effort.
Splice -
I really enjoyed it. It wasnt the horror/fly ripoff I expected it to be by a long shot. More of a (clumsy, but hey its a film) look at human nature and its various influences (nature/genetics, nurture) and morality. Touted as a 'science has gone crazy: more like frankenstien than the fly, really. Good stuff.

I just watched Splice as well. I'm not sure I enjoyed it exactly, but I was very impressed - it's all very well done, convincing FX too despite the low budget. I'm not usually a fan of Adrien Brody, but he and Sarah Polley do a very good job of keeping your sympathy even when their behaviour is pretty dubious. I definitely felt the Frankenstein connection, and I guess it takes that twisted version of parent/child dependence and eventual role reversal to a whole new place...
Vincenzo Natali is a director to keep an eye on, I think.
Let Me In - US remake of Let the Right One In in and (surprisingly) is realy quite a good film in its own right. It's more of a mainstream horror flic, lacking the subtle touch of the original. The pace is quicker, there is little of the dialogue sparse stillness the typifies the Northern European origin of Let the Right One In in. Having said that Let Me In is a solid piece of work and well worth a watch. Those who don't mind watching films with subtitles should seek out the Swedish predecessor, which is a modern classic.
The Kids Are All Right - Brilliant film with some serious acting talent performing a witty script, what more could a viewer want... highly recommended.

I've now been to see Werner Herzog's "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" twice in two days at the cinema because I can't get the damn thing out of my head. Unfortunately, given last night's attendance, I suggest seeing it this week if you want to as I can't see it playing for more than a week. Which is a shame because it is one of the best things I have seen on a cinema screen and certainly the best thing I have seen in 3D. If you're familiar with Herzog's other documentaries, especially "Encounters at the End of the World", you'll have a good idea of what stylistically to expect.
The film is about the 30 000 year old cave paintings at Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc and features footage from within the cave as well as interviews with those attempting to investigate and understand them. As with all Herzog documentaries it is more than that though. It's also a philosophical exploration of whether it is possible to even begin to understand a people so distant from us in time and the nature of what being human actually means.
The paintings themselves are stunning works of art, still as fresh and alive today as the day they were made. The use of 3D really helps to emphasise how the artists used the undulating shapes of the cave wall to enhance, complement and structure their art. The artistic impact and educative qualities of this film are strongly enhanced by the decision to film it in stereo.
I have seen many photographs of the Chauvet cave art in the past and none of them can come close to this film in really showing you, as closely as you'll ever be allowed to get, what these paintings are and how powerful as pieces of art they remain.
"Cave of Forgotten Dreams" is a wonderfully human, intelligent and beautiful film and I cannot urge you to see it strongly enough before it disappears. If you're in London try to see it this week, if you're elsewhere keep an eye out for screenings, it's really worth it.

It's playing here and there. It's on about six screens in London and may well play for a week or two around the country after that. It opens in the States in April. Keep an eye out I guess. It will come out on DVD and Blu Ray I imagine but unless you have a 3D TV you'll miss a lot I think.[slightly over emotional evangelising mode]

That actually does sound interesting, but theres no way I can see it in the cinema: is a release likely?
I've just watched Monsters. I really liked it. And was extra impressed considering it was shot on a $500,00 budget & most of the scenes ad-libbed on location with locals as extras.
Just got back from seeing Source Code. It was good but I got confused at the ending! Need somebody to explain it to me - I've had a long day and my brain doesn't seem to be working properly
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I - Quite grim for a kids film, well shot with good production values but it's still only above average. For me the best bit of the film was the animated sequence telling the tale of the three brothers.
I disagree about Outcasts, for me it was a total car-wreck! One of the worst sci-fi dramas I've ever seen. However, I think Battlestar Galactica has pushed the standard for the genre so high that anything else even vaguely similar will look pale in comparison.
In that case I highly recommend Battlestar Galactica though its not for everyone. Quite slow at times, very 'political' (often called 'West Wing in Space') and IMO the ending was rubbish. But it's got to be 1 of the top 5 all-time TV shows - a classic.
I know what you mean with the Harry Potter films, I can never recall what happened in the previous film! I think they just aren't 'memorable' enough, far too run-of-the-mill.
oh it's good but it's not an entirely serious show. jerry o'connell's in it.I gave up half way through the first book because I just found it unpleasant.
Watched game of thrones too, not sure if i like it or not. I mean I do, but it's quite dark, and suffers from a lot of HBO things in that you get the feeling they're swearing etc. just because they can.
I gave up half way through the first book because I just found it unpleasant.
Hobo With A Shotgun - as it says on the tin really! Based off a Grindhouse trailer apparently, so it's one of those awesome cheesy b-movies! It was actually a lot more enjoyable/less cheesy than some "serious" action films I've seen, very entertaining :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssHEAOrAdCU
Finally getting round to watching The Pacific. Just watched the second episode. Not sure if it's as good as the hype. After this I shall be watching Band of Brothers.
"Legion".
Utter tripe.
If I was going to make a Biblical/apocolyptic/zombie/kung-fu movie, this WOULDN'T be it...
Transpires, whilst we've been talking about the forced "adultness" in Game of Thrones, it's MASSIVELY toned down from the books
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Well, what a load of rubbish. :?
Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time - Well, what a load of rubbish. :?
But are there any fit women in it?
I generally make a point of not watching films which are based on computer games, and vice versa (games based on films)... or at least don't have terribly high expectations whenever i break my rule. There's the odd exception which proves the rule, but by and large...
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - Average at best, more like a made-for-TV movie, not a patch on the first in the trilogy.
wait there's an extended version?
i've only seen the first film so far, and while it was very good, it was noticeably cut down a lot from the books.
Only just got round to watching the Seven bluray I've had for ages! I read somewhere that it was a bad conversion - clearly talking rubbish as it looks brilliant in HD :)
Yeah, apparently they were shown on Swedish TV as a six-part miniseries - 3 hours per book/film, each divided into two parts. You can buy them on DVD/Blu-ray in Scandinavia but they don't have English subtitles (AFAIK).
The UK and US Blu-rays of the theatrical versions aren't very good, so I've been reluctant to buy them - I keep hoping someone will be enterprising enough to release the extended versions with better transfers and some extras.
Tangled - Solid effort from Disney, better than I expected. Good music (if you like a show tune), well voiced and good humor... worth a watch.
And on the TV front, True Blood - Season 3 while not as good as the first season it has a more interesting story arc then Season 2.
just watched the running man on tv. its a film i grew up with since i was too young and still love massively... but watching it with the wife does ruin it slightly.
she found it odd that the tv audience that had knowingly gone to see a gameshow involving bloody violent deaths, cheering at every moment, were suddenly outraged when the presenter turned out to have told a porky or two!
still, so many good/bad one liners in that film

I'm not averse to an Arnie film - some are good, some are bad, but nearly all are watchable (I just bought Last Action Hero on Blu-ray 8) ).
But I never really liked The Running Man, maybe because I'd already read the book but I think it's partly because it co-stars Maria Conchita Alonso, an actress I always find irritating.
Looking forward to the upcoming releases of the Conan films though!

My wife doesn't understand why I like Commando :(

Agreed Philly. I found her very irritating in that film. I thought she was also in Predator - couldn't see her listed in IMDB though so I may be mistaken.
As for The Running Man, the book was much better than the film.
Sucker Punch - Better than I was expecting. Not a great movie, but the action is intense and there actually is a story behind all the action - not that it's a deep plot though.
The Wicker ManPhew, think I'd want a cup of tea and alittle sit down after watching those two together.
Don't Look Now
Two absolutely classic British horror films, showing in a double-bill just as they did in 1973.
Calmer than you are...
Man The Big Lebowski is a masterpiece. Probably hands down the funniest film ever made in my book. I could watch the Sorry-I-wasn't-listening-mug-hits-forehead[i/] scene on a loop near forever.
Hangover 2 - The first Hangover was a pleasant surprise and pretty funny. Second one okay but not as funny.
Don't rush to see it, wait until it's on ITV 1 on Christmas evening in 5 years....

Cheers Tom - I'd made a decision to avoid this after hearing Mark Kermodes review. He absolutely hated it! Did you find it racist at all?
my wife was recently left a dvd collection in a will. we have just finished unpacking - looks like i am going to be busy for a while
the new torchwood is disappointing. its been Americanized with a much bigger budget - but some of the hammiest acting i have ever seen, and not in a good way. however, the first episode was filmed in the gower near a campsite we visit occasionally (also filmed an episode of skins there) and in a cottage we have talked about hiring everytime we have walked along that beach.
thinking of having an infernal affairs marathon this weekend, seen the 1st one but none of the others and we now have a limited collectors edition boxed set of the whole series of films taking up a lot of space on the shelf.
It was Rhossili wasn't it?
Got Salo to watch tonight. Watched it along time ago but got inspired to rewatch it after coming across this bananas performance art/theater/holiday http://www.villa-salo.dk/

Probably a good idea not to visit that at work.
I've seen about 8 (-ish) film since my last post but there were all absolute garbage, so... skip to the end...
The Fighter - Fantastic film with an amazing performance from Christian Bale, he might be a c**t but that fella' can act. The story is the same 'hungry' boxer movie you've seen many times before but that make it no less enjoyable. The characters are so well portrayed, at times, if feels more like a documentary. Highly recommended.

I watched this recently and agree with all of the above. What a great family to be a part of! I'm wondering if the sisters really were that bad!
Those sisters were just sooooo tacky and skanky every single one of them! :D I wonder if they really looked like this :D
If you footage of the real Dicky and Micky it is amazing how well Bale and Wahlberg pull off their mannerisms.

Watched Piranha last night - the 2010 version with Kelly Brooks breasts in it.
Jeez - I expected it to be trash, but it's been a while since I've seen anything quite so dire - OK, it was TRYING to be cr@p, but it's rare to see a film so completely living up to its own aspirations.

It's dreadful, isn't it? The attempts at humour never rise above the level of "look, titties!" and there are no characters you even remotely give a toss about (actually, Kelly Brook was one of the few I didn't completely hate). It's all so utterly stupid.
I think we're getting old, Mark.
also watched Super (no, not super 8). A bit like kickass, but not. i quite liked it, but some of it really didnt work. Ellen Page is more annoying than ever and its pleasing to see her perish.
I never got the whole wrestler and black swan as part of the same thing that darren claims - but they really do accompany each other quite well
Does anyone know of any good noir movie DVD collections? I've found some but they aren't that substantial.
ok, not a film - but i am currently watching ulysses 31 again - its got to be 20 years + since i watched it last
yes, the dialogue and animation is pretty bad... but its got a respectable amount of anti religiosity, has some quite dark moments... and a guitar or synth solo every few minutes. i can see why i liked this so much as a kid!
on the same theme, i tried to rewatch thundercats which was a massive disappointment - but the new series of that is actually ok
next week is for starfleet
I Saw the Devil
Exactly as good as I had expected from a brilliant director working with excellent actors.
A seriously gritty, dark and violent as $%&# movie about revenge.

A seriously gritty, dark and violent as $%&# movie about revenge.
Good stuff! Are you a fan of Korean movies in general?
My favourite scary movie is A Tale of Two Sisters, too.
Surprised that Drive is actually good - the trailers that are shown on tv here make it look like a really rubbish cheesy action film.Definitely not that. It ain't perfect but it's certainly not any sort of action film. More of a suspense, thriller, gangster type film.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy - Really liked this a lot, especially the performances and the pacing. It has a slow relentless build up of tension which worked really well for me. It reminded me of Wages of Fear in that regard.

Just finished watching The Killing.
Really liked it, but was frustrated by the ending. Roll on S2!
Actually, it reminded me a lot of The Wire.
C4, i thought. I gave up on the remake about 1.5 episodes in. Horrible. The danish version was absolutely awesome.
Can't comment on Danish version - but I did really like the US version. Quite dark.
I'd imagine the Danes did it darker though!
Ronal The Barbarian.
What an utterly stupid film..
Of course, I loved it! Not high art in any way at all, just wall-to-wall hilarity!
yeah i thought zombieland was pretty good (it's the one with jesse eisenberg and emma stone, right?). I was suprised, i don't normally like horror, but then again it was more sorta comedy horror...

It is so NOT horror!
I like Zombieland, but I think the bit in the middle with Bill Murray was a mistake. It's a good bit, and Murray is funny, but it makes the film grind to a complete halt.

Yeah that's the one, I thought it was pretty good. Speaking of zombies, The Walking Dead starts up again on Sunday! Hoping S2 is better than the first which I thought started off good and got more boring each episode.
Just watched City of God, incredible film!
I bought Downfall the other day. Of course I got to the bit that they use for the parodies and my mind wandered a bit but came back a bit after.
The film was well done I thought but I am not a film buff so I am probably easily pleased. Not like you intellectuals. I was waiting to see what would happen in the end.

I am a film buff - dunno about intellectual - and I think it's a brilliant film.
If that's the one you mean Philly - yes, SUPERB film... but... er, parodies??? What sort of idiotic @rse would make parodies about what's in that film? At the moment, I can't even imagine which part(s) could be parodied without me feeling an irrational desire to slap the people who thought they could make it funny ...
But mebbe (I'm hoping) it's a different film that you guys are talking aout?
So what are peoples recommendations for decent horror films for the weekend then? I've got Let Me In on Sky+ but fancy something else.
Breaking Bad season 4 finale was amazing. Best show on TV imo, tops The Wire for me. As well as having a great storyline, the cinematography is incredible - especially in the desert scenes, everything looks so nice. Won't spoil anything but will just say Walter White is a badass :D
My favourite scene is that one at the diner where they figure out the "plot" behind Anaconda Malt Liqor
Merantau
Unquestionably the best Indonesian martial arts movie directed by an ex-pat Welshman I have ever seen....

Good. The market's really been clogged up with those recently
I'll be watching some Chrimbo films soon. A bit early I know but there are quite a few I would like to fit in this year. I didn't get round to watching It's a Wonderful Life last year - definitely on my list this year. One of the greatest films ever made IMO.

Believe it or not, I've never seen it!
I'm not particularly into Christmas films, but one good memory I have is, many years ago, the BBC showed the films of Jacques Tati early each morning over the Christmas period. Those are probably my favourite films of all - they certainly make me feel more happy than any other films I can think of. :)
Actually, I've never seen any Jacques Tati films. I don't think I've even heard of him before. I'm obviously not as cultured as you.

He was a French actor/writer/director who only made a handful of films between the late '40s and early '70s. They're very gentle comedies, not silent but with almost no dialogue, and most of them star Tati as M. Hulot, a middle-aged man who is somewhat baffled by the people and the modern world around him. They're utterly charming and I love them to bits. :D
(Nothing like Hattie Jacques! But do you remember Eric Sykes, who had a long-running TV series with Hattie Jacques? He made a famous short film called The Plank, which was quite similar to Tati's style)
Philly, you have to see It's a Wonderful Life, it's fantastic. Not really so much a Christmas film as a film set at Christmas.
Glad you enjoyed The Black Shield of Falworth! :DThat's an awesome movie! If it's out on BluRay, I need to get it.
Anyone watching Black Mirror? I thought the first episode was alright but 2nd was awesome! Really enjoyed it but sort of felt unsettled afterwards.
Dead Snow.. probably the worst zombie film, it's completely ridiculous and yet I couldn't stop watcing

Whether or not you like the film, that is the single greatest tagline of any movie ever of all time in this universe and the next.
the big difference comes down to digital vs physical effects. and i have to say even the bad physical effects from the original look good next to the bad CGI in the new one, but there are a lot of similarities and it does feel like the same alien.
Finally got around to watching Walk The Line. What a great movie!
The Girl with the dragon tattoo - as good as the original in a different way. The scenes that are suppose to be shocking are, Daniel Craig plays Mickel Blomkivsit (?) perfectly for me & Rooney Mara is eerily good as Lisbeth Salander. It is an american remake but does enough for me to make it a good version of the book
I'm looking forward to seeing The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Just finished reading the book and I'm halfway through the second. Really good reads. I'm going to try to watch the original before the remake just to see how they all compare.
I saw attack the block. I didnt hate it as much as I expected, and liked it more as it went on. ?
I had mixed feelings about the Swedish film, I thought it caught the atmosphere of the book perfectly, and I was surprised at how uncompromising it was in showing the sexual sadism stuff, but I felt it glossed over too much of the story. It was like they'd taken a detective story with Blomqvist as the viewpoint character and turned it into an action-suspense thriller with Salander as the viewpoint character. The plot, which in the book leads you inevitably to it's conclusions and explains them in depth, is hamfistedly resolved in 10 minutes, which I'm sure if you haven't read the book must be really confusing.
For me the detective story, the hacking elements and the conspiracy unravelling were what made the story good in the first place, were glossed over for the sake of momentum. I'd say that the film is most definitely The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and NOT Men Who Hate Women.
isn't there a longer version of the film available? i haven't seen it, though.
True, but they made choices about how much time they devoted to what that choked off the main story, while at the same time having long silent shots of Swedish exteriors. They edited out too much important stuff while dragging out stuff that wasn't crucial to the central plot.I had mixed feelings about the Swedish film, I thought it caught the atmosphere of the book perfectly, and I was surprised at how uncompromising it was in showing the sexual sadism stuff, but I felt it glossed over too much of the story. yeah it was a bit quick at times. that happens with most film adaptations of novels, though.

I, on the other hand, waited for the extended versions because I knew they'd be coming eventually. :lol:The problem with playing that game is I'm still waiting for the unabridged (single film) director's cut of Kill Bill :(
I may still buy the theatrical version of part 1 because it was released as a "proper" film, but I think I can probably do without the truncated versions of parts 2 and 3.

Just watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Surprisingly funny, stupid but funny. This scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBm2KqyLxTo) is great
I'm about 3/4 of the way through Sons of Anarchy season 4, really good so far. Much darker than the other ones!
Just watched Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Surprisingly funny, stupid but funny.I love that movie! It helps if you've seen Walk The Line first to fully appreciate it though.

In the year 2056 - the not so distant future - an epidemic of organ failures devastates the planet. Out of the tragedy, a savior emerges: GeneCo, a biotech company that offers organ transplants, for a price. Those who miss their payments are scheduled for repossession and hunted by villainous Repo Men. In a world where surgery addicts are hooked on painkilling drugs and murder is sanctioned by law, a sheltered young girl searches for the cure to her own rare disease as well as information about her family's mysterious history. After being sucked into the haunting world of GeneCo, she is unable to turn back, as all of her questions will be answered at the wildly anticipated spectacular event: The Genetic Opera.
I saw a special screening of Repo! The Genetic Opera a few years ago.
The director was there to introduce it and they were obviously hoping it would turn into a new Rocky Horror Show - they had women in nurses' uniforms, noisy people "planted" in the audience to try to get us to cheer and sing along.... I thought it was utter shitee. :|

I agree for the most part!
Like I said, I liked the idea the film was based on, but that's about it. Non of the songs were catchy enough, which I think is always a problem with films like that.
Yes, I'm also enjoying Homeland... though I do wonder how long they can run with the is-he-isn't-he storyline, more than one season?
homeland's pretty good, anyone watching it?
I watched it at the weekend, it was watch-able enough but didn't seem to have a point. Also, became increasingly annoying that he didn't use his super intelligence to solve his problems and formulate contingencies (which kinda made the ending hollow), he just tried to buy solutions to his problems.
Limitless - I didn't think Bradley Cooper could carry a film on his own, but he does a pretty good job. Not bad at all, although it seemed like they didn't really know how to end it.

EDIT: i like danes' acting
I think she's alright for the most part. But she really gets much better as the season goes on. I think she's a bit two dimensional for the first 6 or 7 episodes.
There's a brilliant bit from one of his standup shows where he talks about the suggestions that he'd direct the Green Hornet movie. "Kato and the Green Hornet are there leaning against the car chatting about stuff for 10 minutes, then Kato goes "what's that?", the rush out of shot and there's a brief scuffle off camera, the they stroll back to the car going "so yeah, anal sex...." "
I liked homeland.
It was refreshing to see something deal with terrorism in a human and morally ambiguous way. Not condoning flying planes into buildings by a LONG shot, but "Terrorist" has become a linguistic facilitation for 'We can kill them with complete impunity and ethical justification, and so satisfy our lust for blood and violence in TV and film with a clear, smug conscience', which is both facile and boring.
Red State
Believe it or not, I've never properly seen a Kevin Smith film before. I'm guessing this isn't typical of his work. Can't say I liked it, but it's certainly effective thanks to a couple of good performances. Very talky though - I can see why Tarantino's a fan....
quit now! too many series where they clearly never had a plan and are making it up as they went along. i think i kept watching it under the assumption they must be going somewhere with it. I suppose in fairness some of it was enjoyable but i certainly wont ever watch it again now its all done.
i also find myself put off by any programmes advertised as 'from the makers of lost'

+1
i stupidly got into it, and by the time it became obvious they were just stringing you along it was too late :(
but yeah i'm getting sick of series where it's clear they're making it up as they go along (and they're obvious about it). Obviously most series are like that, to a certain extent, but some are worse than others.
Farscape was great, yeah. Same goes for quite a number of the lesser sung weird and wonderful rascals like Lexx.
Rome was a masterwork. And has my favourite closing line of all time in "About your father..."
For me The Wire is still the high point of TV. I haven't seen anything that has bettered it just yet.
Oh and Wez's missus reminded me of this: Spaced (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpb1OXvNNMc)
Hear hear!
But then I tend to think nearly all recent American series are like that. Including 24, incredibly.
So I don't watch 'em.
I liked babylon 5
Babylon 5 had a plan. And brought plans back to TV shows. Then lost threw them out again.
I dont really see how the main theme of a show can be 'it doesnt make sense'.
Babylon 5 was fantastic. Shame that doubts over renewal mean the final episodes of the 4th and 5th seasons feel odd, but overall the heavy plotting from start to finish was great and meant there was never a "they're just making it up" vibe.
Same goes for all the Lost-a-likes (Flash Forward et-al).
Of course, Band of Brothers is also up there. I did try watching The Pacific but to be honest found it a little boring after 4 or 5 episodes.
I've never seen Band of Brothers, but just ordered it on ebay after all the talk of how good it is. Been meaning to watch it anyway!
Just to add to the list of modern American TV classics - Six Feet Under and Deadwood. Though the lack of a real ending for Deadwood is a mark against it. Six Feet Under has the best ending episode of any series I can remember.
If the Wire clicks with you, Philly, the problem won't be finding time to watch it, but finding reasons not to.
also heard that sky arts is getting the original israeli version of homeland- excellent :D
^ yeah i mean i haven't read the books but at times with this new series i had no clue what was going on
I'd like to see that. Be very curious if something that made Israeli telly was as sympathetic to Muslim terrorists.
i felt it was an issue with the books as well. there were definite moments where i had to use the family trees in the book to remind me who was who and what had happened to them.
the second book starts as the second series does, with lots of new characters for you to get to know and love. It keeps growing this way through out the other books too.
As a TV series i have simialr feeligns to the walking dead - Massive attempts to be true to the source material at first but it dwindles very quickly and tehre is no way either of the Tv series will get as far as the books currently are
watched a film called 'Moon' last night.. a kind of arty sci-fi. Liked it alot.
watched The cabin in the woods last night. thought it was great, although i guess it wont be for everyone
it takes the clichéd horror film format and completely throws it out the window, it does loose some of the tension of a traditional horror film and has more humour (it is Joss Whedon). probably not one to see if you like horror films to really scare you, but a must see if you want something a bit different
watched a film called 'Moon' last night.. a kind of arty sci-fi. Liked it alot.Great film. The directorial debut of David Bowies son. Source Code (his second) wasn't too shabby either.

Moon is a classic. No fighting robots or explosions. Good old-style sci-fi told well. Reminded me of a cross between Silent Running and 2001 (in tone rather than content). Great film.
Tentatively good news. Major drop in quality so far and some major streamlining and out of character moments don't bode well. Hopefully it's just to try and quickly introduce characters and trim things a little for mainstream audiences.I think they have done really well with game of thrones so far although the scale of the places where the events take place is totally lost. The first 3 books were awesome but book 4 (feast) was disappointing and book 5 (dance) was awful.

This post reminded me I'd never seen Silent Running so I watched it last night. Quite enjoyed it aside from the honking Baez tunes. So cheers.
It's now inspired me to go back and watch the other stuff from that wee blitz of 70s sci fi like Dark Star, THX1138 and Solaris.

If the tv show stays good, season 3 will be the best season, season 4 will be ok (probably better cut down for tv) but season 5 will bore people and then really piss them off.

Why on earth would you go and do that?!
Looking forward to this - Django Unchained (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/quentin-tarantino-django-unchained-synopsis-jamie-foxx-christpoh-waltz-leonardo-dicaprio-312094)
One I enjoyed more than I expected to recently was the Thing remake/prequel. I'm going to be a harsh critic of it as I consider Carpenter's Thing in the top 3 monster movies of all time (Alien and Cronenberg's The Fly being the other two). So I went in expecting a travesty and found myself quite enjoying it.
What's good is that it's quite reverential to the Carpenter film and sticks rigidly to things that happen in it. That also counts against it as you know exactly how things are going to turn out. I suppose knowing that removes a bit of suspense, but I don't see how it could have been done any other way. The other thing that jars slightly is the need for a couple of Americans in there. I understand why however and they mostly get away with it.
Finally the Thing itself. The reason the original worked as well as it did was down to what Carpenter could do with very little and he was at the very peak of his powers on the Thing. The new film is a little hobbled by modern CGI (I know it's animatronics enhanced by CGI in this...) and the modern need to show you how impressive it is in absolute graphic detail. Which leaves nothing to the imagination. Carpenter would keep it dark and give you a glimpse of what was in the darkness. Which just works better. As such when it does split open for the umpteenth time, it's no shock. It, and to be fair a lot of modern horror, has lost that impact and suspense.
It's worth a watch though. Carpenters film is an utter masterpiece (and needs seeing first if this has somehow passed you by), this is kind of a nice companion piece to go with it which you can enjoy even if you really liked the original.
The Avengers - pretty good! Not quite as good as the hype but it was an awesome action film with constant fights. The Hulk was awesome in it :D
Primer: Good god what a hard film to watch. And so $%&#ing awesome. I love it. I'm not quite sure what happened, but its brilliant. Very original and extremely intelligently written film. I'm also pretty sure its budget was lower than the cost of my main rig (though it doesnt show, and it doesnt seem like it needs more in the least; its not that kind of film - you'll have to see it to understand).

Pretty much my favourite mind-$%&# film. It took me about 4 or 5 viewings in various states being (finally half cut seemed to be about right), before I finally think I had got my head around all the timelines and what was going on. Brilliant film for those with the patience.

I've definitely seen it (in fact I think I have it on DVD). Can't remember a damn thing about it, except I thought it was very good.
Currently halfway through the first episode of that Dead Set channel 4 tv series from a few years ago (big brother + zombies). Really enjoying it so far!
I didn't like the look of Bridesmaids, but I heard Mark Kermode say it's good, and I quite often agree with his reviews... maybe I'll check it out.
Can't recommend this film enough, especially if you're tired of the missus dragging you off the see shite rom-coms
Can't recommend this film enough, especially if you're tired of the missus dragging you off the see shitee rom-coms
I haven't got anyone to drag me to rom-coms, so I don't see many of them unless they're on TV and there's nothing else to watch!
Last one I saw was The Proposal, which was just about bearable because Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock are good comedy actors. Knocked Up was quite good. Probably my "favourite" rom-coms are Honeymoon In Vegas and It Could Happen To You, probably thanks to Nic Cage and that goofy, likeable quality he has (or had...).
Anyway, I'll give Bridesmaids a go.
The paintball episode of Community was amazing. Senor Chang is possibly my favourite character from any TV series!
I went to see the new batman 'the dark knight rises' and would give it 1 out of 10, one of the worst films I've ever seen. If you are thinking it looks good from the trailer then don't be fooled! don't expect a classic...

Are you trolling us right now? I guess at least one person has to hate it haha.
I thought the dark knight rises wasn't a patch on the dark knight. It was pretty obvious what was gonna happen and I was a little bored, not a bad film but too much hype if you ask me.

go and see it and make up your own mind, it is not in the same league as batman begins and the dark knight...nowhere near
Looper. Not sure really. It was alright but not as amazing as reviews led me to believe!
I thought was enjoyable enough and there were some good action bits in. But considering one review described it as "this generations matrix" or something like that, I felt a bit let down
I went to see Looper last night. Joseph Gordon-Levitt really pulled off being a younger Bruce Willis. I recommend it if you like your films a bit wibbily-wobbly-timey-wimey.
I've been talked into going to see Sinister later, i predict i will poo myself at least a few times

For a mainstream Hollywood horror movie, Sinister is about as good as it gets (IMO, of course).
Taken 2 is the same as the first. Total and utter rubbish but marvelous silly fun.
You can't not like a film with a teenage girl nonchalantly flinging grenades about a city centre.
you'd like Troll 2 then
Kate Beckinsale in tight leather. She would make Prometheus awesome.
Kate Beckinsale in tight leather. She would make Prometheus awesome.
Agree, felt like half a film to me (awakenings) and seemed a bit, well, plotless... But it has Kate, vampires and warewolves. I have the same problem with the Resident Evil films. Pants, but a total guilty pleasure.
But no, Prometheus was shitee on a level I did not anticipate. I wish I'd known it was written by the tool who made up Lost as it went along. It's stunning to look at, don't get me wrong. But like Avatar and Terminator 2. Peel away the prettiness and it's just a shiny turd underneath.
Prometheus. $%&#ing prometheus. I hated it. It made no sense whatsoever, it was drenched in religious subtext, actual text, imagery and generally had a neon sign that said GODGODGODGODGODGOD with which it beat you over the head. A bar-stewardised mashup of greek mythology, the bible and dante filtered through the mind of that Ancient Aliens tw@t with the hair. Also, it made no sense. At all. The best I could figure, it was all because they were mad at us for killing jesus. I thought that was mental, so I looked it up and was disappointed to find I was right. Script was bollocks, all acting was bargain basement except Michael Fassewhatsit, who was pretty awesome to be fair. And it made no sense.
Grade: Cannot unsee.
I went to a screening of the newly restored Lawrence of Arabia today.
There's a film which really has to be seen on a big screen. Bollocks to iPads.
I essentially gave up two minutes in when a guy sprints to see archaeology. In case it's going to vanish in two minutes after having been there for 10,000 years.

In a film with many, many flaws your issue is with the idea somebody can get excited about their work!

I've just been reccommended quartet of depressing Sean Penn films that I'm about to marathon in a dark room with a bottle of scotch.
1 The Crossing guard
2 The pledge
3 Into the wild
4 Loved
see you guys on the other side....
Tonight I've watched You've Been Trumped
Rarely has a documentary made me so angry. It astounds me that governments and people in power can act like that without a care for others rights or feelings. I guess thats why I'm neither a politician or successful businessman.
It's on iPlayer at the moment if anyone really wants to see what a massive c0ck Trump really is. I imagine I'll still be angry about it for a while.
Not sure if anyone on here is from Aberdeenshire. Would be good to hear some views on this if we have sincere here.
The best I could figure, it was all because they were mad at us for killing jesus. I thought that was mental, so I looked it up and was disappointed to find I was right.
Skyfall was about on a par with his first two. Not better or worse. Good, but not 'the best ever' as the hype machine would have you believe.
Coraline - I know I'm way behind the times but I finally got round to watching this (in 2D). Beautiful animation but I wish the story was a little darker (I know it is primarily aimed at kids!)

Watch 9 (not the chorus line one) if you want a darker tale. Not really sure this one was targetted at kids unless it was to scare the shitee out of them. Loved it.

I think all the Daniel Craig Bonds have been overhyped.
I wish trailers would stop showing every cool bit in a film though, I'm gonna have to stop watching them!
The Dalton films seem to be lacking in "Britishness", somehow, they have a different atmosphere from all other Bond films.
Connery had most of the best films, but he should never have come back for Diamonds Are Forever - he looks about 500 years old and his hairpiece looks like it came off a shop window dummy.
In some ways Roger Moore is my favourite Bond, I like that self-deprecating humour he had (and seems to have in real life), but some of his films are really weak. I do really like For Your Eyes Only, that's one of the best of the lot I think.
To me Roger Mores Bond was way too cartoonish and that's not what i assosiate Bond with or think was the intended image in Ian Flemming's novels.
To me Roger Mores Bond was way too cartoonish and that's not what i assosiate Bond with or think was the intended image in Ian Flemming's novels. My dad always says the best Bond-who-never-was would've been Patrick McGoohan (from The Prisoner and Danger Man). That might have been interesting.
It's interesting hearing all the opinions on Skyfall. I don't know what I think because I'm too close to it (I supervised the VFX for the pre-title sequence, the Shanghai sequence and Silva's Island): all I see are things I'd have done differently in hindsight :). I need to see it by myself (rather than in a cast and crew screening) at a quiet matinee and then I'll have a better idea what I think. I do think the photography is spectacular though, Deakins is a genius.
Silent Hill Revelation. Not amazing but definitely better than the first one! For once I remembered to take my glasses to the cinema and the 3D worked so much better with those on. The ash falling at the start etc looked great.

I quite liked the 1st film, although I think I may be in a minority there.
I watched Tucker and Dale Vs Evil a few days ago and quite enjoyed it.
It's a 'Redneck in the woods' type film but it's played very much for laughs and doesn't work like you think it's going to.

I had very high hopes for the first film, because the director Christophe Gans' previous film, Brotherhood of the Wolf, is one of my all-time favourites. As it turned out, it was very stylish, but a godawful mess. :?
When you say VFX (which I assume is Visual FX?) is that stuff done with PCs or stunts done in real life etc?
I was only saying to my girlfriend after we'd watched Skyfall how I like the Bond films as they tend to be more about real stunts than CGI as in alot of other films of similar style. Hopefully I'm right when I say that!
Anyone seen Outpost 2 yet..? That's another I'm a little wary of.
I have a weakness for nazi zombie films, what can I say...
The Cabin In The Wood. Not sure if I enjoyed this or thought it was utter shitee!
Nazi zombies are so 1995
Its all about moon nazis now.
...Iron Sky is funny as hell. It also knows how $%&#ing stupid it is. I loved it.
I agree, dave. But it would be far too ironic to have a serious discussion about the merits of non-serious films, so I'm just gonna leave it there.
 The ideas are daft, of course, but the actual style of the film is pretty restrained I think. Even Udo Kier doesn't really ham it up that much (shockingly!).
I found the bits with the Sarah Palin lookalike US President and the UN(?) meetings more amusing than the Nazi stuff.
An idea so awesome on paper that it should have been golden. It just never lived up to the premise.
JCVH - Essentially vampires are walking the earth again this time killing lesbians. Because the church doesn't do gay, they won't get involved. Whereas Jesus who preaches love for everyone comes to their rescue. With kung-fu.
It's amazingly awful. I was pissed out of my mind when I watched it with friends and I still remember sitting there going WTF?! (not in a good way).
Just watched "The Third Man", I now want to tell all films that aren't the third man to shape up and try harder.
That soundtrack!
Dredd was brilliant. But I think the proviso as to whether you like it or not comes down to whether you know the source material. If you do, you'll love it. If you don't. you'll think it's shitee and wonder what all the fuss is about.
Just rewatched Oldboy, such a good film!
Pies don't live very long at all when I'm around.
I was pleased when I heard they were making a film but amazed to hear about TC playing the role. I am sure he is very good but it struck me as odd- for ages there were stories that another apparently well known actor would be playing the role but I cannot remember who as I take little interest in such things.
I've read all but the latest book Dave. As Philly says, not great literature in the traditional sense but very entertaining and a favourite of mine. Liam Neeson should have been Reacher :)
Neeson's too old and plodding. Look at the way they had to shoot Taken in that cr@ppy shakeycam/closeup/fast-edit style, basically because he couldn't handle the action scenes. :P
Just finished watching Ong-Bak. Awesome. And hardly any elephants.
Yeah - I remember seeing another Tony Jaa film a few years ago, can't remember what it was called, but he was trying to find an elephant...
Just finished watching Ong-Bak. Awesome. And hardly any elephants.
Dredd - not bad but having seen The Raid it's just a blatant rip off and the action scenes are not nearly as good. It was fun and the visuals/soundtrack are awesome, but too similar for my liking - there was even a fight in a drug lab ffs!
Tinker Tailor, whilst the performances of the actors was brilliant, was just so boring. I kept up with it all, but felt disappointed at the end. My Mrs said "Well, if I had wanted to watch old men in suits bickering, I could have gone to work!"

On a rare night to myself (Jane out, kids asleep) I rented Tinker Tailor. Same experience as yours, great acting spoiled by a really boring film. I felt like I lost my night to myself!
V/H/S - awful, to be honest. I liked the idea of the found-footage "mini stories" within the main plot thing, but it was just poor.
I've got In Bruges on my Sky+ box. Jane doesn't fancy it so it will no doubt be a late night film for me at some point soon.
I started watching Breaking Bad on Thursday night. First season finished already. Compulsive viewing, highly recommended.:D
Just finished watching Breaking Bad. Four and a half seasons in a little over 2 weeks. That's how highly I rated it - literally every spare minute Jane and I had was spent watching that. Highly addictive.
There is now a bit of a hole in my TV viewing until the final 8 episodes of season 5 are released!
Yeah, Breaking Bad was superb.
Have you tried Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead yet? neither is in the same league BB or The Wire, but I enjoyed both more than I thought I would.

I wish I had watched them in moderation instead of watching them all in one ago. Finished them all last week, it is going to be a long wait until July!
Yep - me too. It was so addictive that I couldn't help myself. There was one night where we watch 6 episodes in a row and didn't get into bed until well past 01:00 (that is very late for me!)
it is a great bit of character development - can't wait to see where they take him. also interesting that Jesse Pinkman wasn't supposed to make it past the first series originally.
So many great characters though, Fring and Mike stand out. But I must admit we lost it for a bit with the Tuco stuff between series 1 and 2
Whilst I don't recall all of the traits of Walter in the early episodes I do distinctly remember him panicking when he thought the police were coming for him.
"Of course, it is impossible to prove whether his latest incarnation, Mr. Brainwash, is sincere. The film suggests that Guetta's artistic alter ego is largely a creation of Banksy, a notion Guetta doesn't refute." Guetta told the paper: "In the end, I became [Banksy's] biggest work of art."
Whilst I don't recall all of the traits of Walter in the early episodes I do distinctly remember him panicking when he thought the police were coming for him.
That scene was pretty funny. In that scene Bryan Cranston played Walter exactly as he plays Hal in Malcolm in the Middle. As interesting as Walter is I can't 100% say I really like him anymore.
Watched Evil Dead at the weekend!
i remember the original, vaguely. This one was OK, I guess, slicker, incredible vomit inducing effects. Didn't really have the shocks for me though, all gore and no real horror.
Battleship
If you'd told me someone had made a film featuring both Rihanna and Tadanobu Asano in leading roles I never would've believed you. But as it turned out, I quite enjoyed it. As films based on Hasbro games go, it's better than Transformers, at any rate.
Redline. Really really awesome anime film!I do like a good anime, will give it a look.
Iron man 3 was meh, some good performances but several pretty stupid setpieces stifled my enjoyment.
I've started watching Hannibal in the last few days. Pretty decent so far - Mads Mikkelsen is impressing so far.
I guess I'll be the 1 to kind of disagree with Tom about Django
I've got and seen all the other Tarantino films and this 1 also has his familiar stamp of: death, lots of talking, death, lots of talking repeat. I also felt it went on far too long. I'm not saying it's a bad film by any means, I just think it could've been shortened considerably.
I saw Star Trek: Into Darkness yesterday and really enjoyed it. I'm not a huge Trek fan by any means; I've never seen any of the original films and apart from seeing a few episodes of DS9, I've never seen the TV series either. I've really enjoyed both the reboot Trek films, and Bennedict Cumberbatch makes a good villain in this newest 1.
I found Chris Pine intensely irritating for the first hour or so.
Game of Thrones tonight. Cripes, I wasn't expecting that. Anyone else see it?
Looper
I didn't know a lot about this before watching it, other than the fact Bruce Willis was in it.... it turned out to be much, much better than the run-of-the-mill science fiction thriller I was expecting. Good stuff!
After all the praise it received here I've bought the 1st 3 series of Breaking Bad on DVD.
So if it turns out to be rubbish you collectively owe me 20quid
you both need to stop what you are doing and get on with it
There's also a fair few pointers to possible upcoming films from the same universe, but I wont' say too much incase that's classed as spoilers and I don't want to ruin it for anyone that may go and see it themselves.
Just been watching Banshee, pretty good in a completely ridiculous way :)
for me the weakest point was the end of season 1 - start of season 2. so much so that I actually stopped watching it for a year then did 1,2 and 3 all in one go, it was just a couple of annoying characters for a couple of episodes.
oh, and A Serbian Film. Do not watch it
There was only one scene I actually found truly horrific and it was for the same reason that I found the end of Human Centipeed 2 disturbing.
Ya, know? I actually have no idea which version it was but if it was the cut version I don't think I want to see what was cut. It's a shame because I actually thought it was a beautifully made filem and had alot to say, especially with the aggressive way that pornography has been moving for a long time now, a warning of things to come? Not sure that justified the content, though and I'm sure I'm reading too much into it. It's late and I think I'm Mark $%&#ing Kermode
There was only one scene I actually found truly horrific and it was for the same reason that I found the end of Human Centipeed 2 disturbing.
I tried watching but lost interest mid way through the second episode. Completely ridiculous yes. Jane still watches it, I disappear upstairs to play guitar when she does.
I don't quite remember the end of Human Centipede 2, but I don't remember being really disturbed by it. I think it was mostly just silly and boring.
My girlfriend has been watching it with me and this is what she's said about it: "It's alright, but I really don't see the fuss that those blokes on that forum who told you to buy it are going on about" I think I'll be watching the rest on my own though
Everybody's been going on so much about Breaking Bad that I have been persuaded to give it a go.... I suspect I'll last about 1.5 episodes like I do with most American shows, but we'll see.... :|
Also, last night I started watched S1 of The Walking Dead. Loving it so far. Was desperate for the tank to be used though.
*not all of this sentence is entirely accurate.

That's another 1 I enjoyed that the Mrs didn't
Watched Hell Comes to Frogtown last night. Brilliant.
Beyond The Black Rainbow was very artistic and skillful and beautiful and boring as hell.
The Last Love Craft:Cthulu... was amusing to begin with and tedious toward the end.
Planet Terrror was the last film I watched last night, very funny.
My wife works night shifts a few times a week so it's microwave curry and movies
You too busy organizing all your Warmoth necks and bodies or something? ;-p
Ever seen the exploit/docu on hoarders? Think it's on channel4? "This man hasn't been able to get to his bed for fifteen years because of all the guitar necks he has collected over the years and refuses to build. He sleeps in a guitar case."
Good for you :) I've lost about four stone in three years so I know how hard keeping fit-ish can be. Still a fat bar-steward mind but I knew I had to do something when I saw a photo of myself in a sleeveless cardigan and actually thought it was Onslow ;)

Photos like this and the fact that a Caterham is now surprisingly snug on me (used to be no problem), make me think I really should do some more exercise and eat less pie. Then I remember that I don't enjoy exercise but really enjoy pie...

If only!
Nah, health issues. I do lots of exercise nowadays, and I'm much more careful about what I eat, no ready meals or anything like that. It has its benefits, but it's all very time-consuming.

No criticism here!
I only changed my lifestyle because I found out I'm diabetic - if it wasn't for that, I'd probably not be exercising (although I always did that a bit, albeit at ever-widening intervals...) and I'd still be getting fatter. And yes, I really enjoyed pies too!
I certainly don't find my life now any more enjoyable than my life before. It's hard work. But I do kind of like being skinny again.
You do indeed look happy :D now get back to wiring up my pedals, shoo
Lovely car but getting in and out looks like a pain. If I managed to get in one I think I'd be there awhile ;)
I would be really interested in seeing the full (and rather legendary) Philly Q "under the bed guitar catalogue". Any chance you can sum up all the goodies you keep, Philly?
In-laws just rang me, John :D
Yea, it was a good movie but typical blockbuster.
Yeah, I've seen lots of those programmes.
In a way, they're worrying, because I certainly recognise elements of myself; but in another way, they're reassuring, because I'm nowhere near as bad as they are (really, I'm not....!)
I most definitely have a "collector" mentality - if I like a band I get all their albums, I never miss an issue of my guitar magazines, I have lots of books, Blu-rays and DVDs.... and yes I do keep stuff, I don't chuck it out if it still works. BUT.... I don't actually "hoard" useless things (like piles of newspapers etc) for their own sake.
The problem is, you keep buying stuff and it accumulates without you really noticing. Then it's difficult - and time-consuming - to grab the bull by the horns and get things back in order. I know some people could just dive in and chuck everything in a skip over a weekend, without even thinking about it..... but that's not me, I'm afraid. I want to put stuff on eBay, get something back on it if I can.... but that's very time-consuming in itself. And so it goes on....
The Walking Dead was another of my "1.5 episodes" programmes. It's amazing how American TV can take subject matter like zombies and vampires (True Blood) and make them into boring uneventful soaps.
I've not read the books. I do think I would prefer he film though - if only because Mary Elizabeth Winstead looks rather good as Ramona Flowers. Can't decide which hair colour she looks foxiest with though.

its a fair point, and the only thing The Thing remake remake has over the original The Thing remake
It's probably old ness and I'm behind the times but yesterday I saw a poster for a Hollywood remake of 'Oldboy'.
I watched another film which is, I think, based on a comic or graphic novel which (as always) I haven't read: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
I was in a semi-delirious, utterly exhausted state last night due to this ridiculously hot weather everyone thinks is so $%&#ing marvellous :x , but I think I enjoyed it. It took me a while to get into the style of the film, but I never got bored and liked it more as it went along, which is usually a good thing.
I was the CG Supervisor on that and it's the most fun I've ever had making a film. Really happy you liked it. :)
Mixed feelings on Oblivion. The set was spectacular but it really didn't provoke as much thought as it could have. Nice to see big budgets being spent on nearly proper scifi as you put it. You seen Moon? Now THAT is a spectacular scifi from the last few years, low budget too.
Almost finished watching the series The Wire, a police drama that feels real. Not souped up for suspension like all other hollywood based TV series. I can highly recommend it
I think you'll like The Shield. It's a police show about semi dirty cops.Almost finished watching the series The Wire, a police drama that feels real. Not souped up for suspension like all other hollywood based TV series. I can highly recommend it
I think many on here have seen The Wire. An absolute modern classic. I've watched the whole lot twice and am due for my third run through in the next few months.
The great thing about it is that as it is so detailed and there are lots of arcs to the story you are likely pick up new stuff and spot little nuances that you hadn't seen on the previous viewing.
Until Breaking Bad came about I rated The Wire as the best TV series I had ever seen.
Aside from working my way through Breaking Bad as I mentioned above I've just finished watching The Americans - a Cold War KGB/FBI Spy series and I've started watching The Returned that was on TV a few months back.Forgot about The Americans! That was a great show. I was very glad to see it renewed for a second season.
I also bought a boxset of the 5 original Planet Of The Apes films for a Tenner a while back and I've just started watching those. I've only seen the 1st 2 films so far and I'm quite enjoying them upto yet.
Just watched the latest episode of Breaking Bad (confessions). Classic stuff. Probably one of the best episodes of any series I have ever watched. I won't say any more as I don't want to spoil it for others who haven't watched it yet.
I'll be sad when it all finishes.
I really quite liked Oblivion. Dangerously close to being a proper sci-fi there. Though it did have exciting bits and explosions to stop modern audiences falling asleep.
I would like to see The Wire, but you know me, I'd never get round to watching all those episodes.
I believe it was created by David Simon? Back in the days when I did watch more TV he wrote probably my all-time favourite TV series (and one of the very few I have on DVD) Homicide: Life on the Street.
I'm also currently working my way through the wire which is another one where the writers have apparently been allowed to decide when it should end. damn good TV
Yeah I keep meaning to check that out. I believe it was created by David Simon? The man behind my favourite TV show of all time, Homicide: Life on the Street.
I want to know what has changed Homicide : Life on the Street from your 'favourite show of all time' to 'probably all time favourite TV series'
Saw Pain & Gain yesterday. Amusing movie, I thought it was pretty good. But don't expect a serious movie, was still directed by Michael Bay
Moving on from film; has anyone been watching Under the Dome, based on the Stephen King book? My housemate and I have been d/ling it and we're at the end of the first series. It's bloody ace!!Cool, I'll check that series out!

Switchblade Romance/High Tension/Haute tension
This starts out as kind of a home invasion type of film but then moves out of it about halfway through into a story of 2 girls who are trying to survive the night after being taken hostage by a killer who murders the family of 1 of the girls and then takes the other hostage, leaving her friend to try to rescue her. It's a fair bit gorier than I was expecting, not an issue but worth mentioning, and it seems to trade substance for tension, which it seems to do well.

Were you bothered by the - without giving too much away - twist ending? I know quite a lot of people who got really annoyed about it, but I think you just have to accept it, it didn't spoil my enjoyment at all. It's a really good film, shame Alexandre Aja seems to have been going steadily downhill with the films he's directed subsequently.
I'm not familiar with the Writer/Director, so can't say either way about his other work

After Haute Tension, he went from France to the USA and made The Hills Have Eyes (a not-bad remake), Mirrors (remake of a much better Korean film, but with unintentional comedy value courtesy of Kiefer Sutherland in full-on Jack Bauer mode) and..... Piranha 3D. :|
Things can only get better.
Just watched the last ever episode of Breaking Bad. Classics, classic stuff! I can't believe it was all a dream. What a twist! When Walt kills Jessy with Rosebud thinking he was actually dead the whole time...man that was heavy.
I know certain people who would get very worked up if you call Evil Dead 2 a remake rather than a sequel! Personally, I tend to agree with you.
I've watched a fair few films lately but the only 1 that was new to me and not a re-watch was Troll Hunter. I really rather enjoyed it! I'm glad they brought the trolls in as early as they do though, I was starting to get a little bored at the start if I'm honest. How 'good' the FX were I wouldn't like to say, but they worked for what I picture in my head when it comes to the idea of Trolls

Excellent film, now, sadly, being subjected to yet another pointless American remake.
Yeah I've seen it a few times and still have no idea what's going on in it. I believe there's a flowchart that explains it all properly but I can't be bothered to try and figure it out! And for that reason... am oot!The best representation of the movie in a chart I have seen here: http://xkcd.com/657/ (http://xkcd.com/657/) click on it for a bigger version.
Last night, whilst on a loooooong train journey back from Scotland, I watched Lincoln. I really really enjoyed it. I liked that it wasn't a sprawling biopic of his life and 'just' focused on his last 4 months. Highly recommended if you like that sort of stuff!
Worth sticking with BSG. If only for the genius character that is Guyus Baltar.
Caprica 6
Watched Pacific Rim, that was good fun.
Nemesis. A god-aweful piece of cr@p from the early 1990's, with all the charm of a1980's straight to video film.

Wow, starring Olivier Gruner and Tim Thomerson, and directed by Albert Pyun! I feel like I must've seen that, but I don't remember it at all.
"Right then you intergalactic w**ker!"
If you're up for some proper strangeness, watch Meet the Feebles... Muppet watersports... just sayin'
...and of course Braindead.
Genius films, how the great have fallen ;)
Confessions - really awesome Japanese revenge film. Would recommend it, definitely worth a watch.Oh yes, we played that in the cinema I worked in. One of the best thing I have seen in years. The style, the story, the implications....I even watched it twice within a week! And the soundtrack...oh my the soundtrack. Really amazing with all the twists and turns, develpment and such. Mindblowing stuff.
Tokyo Gore Police was a good watch. Especially the Crocovag or Alibater 0_o
Machine Girl tonight! :-D
I thought BSG was excellent. The spin off Caprica was shitee.
Just watched The Hobbit and can't help but feel I've just wasted 3 hours of my life.
Sushi Girl - Really rather excellent, ultra low budget grindhouse stylie film. Tony Todd and Mark Hamill (yes, you read that right), being the stand outs where TT is just menace personified and MH is creepy as $%&#.
Errm, quite nasty... You have been warned!
