Title: Who are your Holy Trinity?
Post by: FELINEGUITARS on October 24, 2007, 08:42:28 PM
Ok - a follow on from a comment that JT made in a thread...

In the past 3 players : Beck, Clapton and Page were referred to as a Holy Trinity, and sure enough in their day they were where it was at .

And to a certain extent their greatness was expressed to a greater extent in the USA where thery had a huge effect on players there.

But who would you classify as your own personal Holy Trinity?

List:
1) the three players who made you start playing in the first place
2) The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you

For myself :

1: Brian May, Paul Stanley, Ace Frehley

2 Randy Rhoads, Michael Schenker, George Lynch

it wasn't really a particular guitarist that made me want to play i don't think. I just wanted to play an instrument and the guitar seemed to be the coolest machine around to belt out a few choons on. I always liked the music in the spaghetti westerns, and i liked those big crunchy chords in highway to hell (i guess that'll be angus young then), and queen ripping it up in my mum's car (oo, there's brian may!), and then there was the almighty Alkaline trio, and matt skiba's gut wrenching drunken heartbroken chainsaw chords (and thats the last one).

But players who've had the most effect on me would have to be;....
i. Whoever played guitar in Indian Summer - those tiny twisty riffs that build up over about 7 minutes into a chaotic mental breakdown.
ii. Warren Haynes - that man plays the blues like no other; whenever i'm bored of guitar i listen to him, and feel like i NEED to catch up!
iii. hmmm, I'll have a think and get back to you - i'm choosing between SRV, hendrix, angus...

The three players who made you start playing in the first place:
1. John Frusciante.
2. Jerry Cantrell.
3. Ace Frehley.

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:
1. John Frusciante.
2. Buckethead.
3. Tom Morello / Mike Einziger.

John Frusciante was basically THE reason I started playing guitar, team that with the riffage of Jerry and the all-out coolness of Ace.

Tom Morello and Mike Einziger more for the use of FX and the way they constantly demonstrate the limitless ways in which you can use them. Buckethead is simply flawless in every way.

If I could play with the half the passion and intensity that John does, I'd be a happy strummer.

Sorry to Mr Ed, your listing was so elegant I had to steal it. 8)

The three players who made you start playing in the first place:
1. Joe Satriani
2. Yngwie Malmsteen
3. Van Halen

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:
1. Zakk Wylde
2. George Lynch
3. Marty Friedman

I remember it being Friends by Satriani, that convinced me to take up the strings.

3 that made me start playing - In specific order..

1) Joe Satriani - Particularly when I heard Surfing with the Alien (the song, not the album)
2) Tom Morello - Particularly the whole first Rage album, one of my top 3 albums of all time probably.
3) Prolly someone totally unworthy like Kurt Cobain, or something, considering who that I was listening to some Nirvana when I started playing.

3 Players that have helped me learn the most so far:

1) Jimi Hendrix - Nuf said.
2) Jimmy Page - Great riffs, great solos.
3) Santana

3 Players which have inspired me the most, and I guess, are my current goals:

1) Paul Gilbert
2) Jason Becker
3) Guthrie Govan

The last 3 is my holy Trinity.

Bert Weedon (don't laugh, got given "Play in a day" for christmas in 1983 )
Fast Eddie Clarke

2:
Alex Lifeson
Gary Holt
Trevor Peres

Players that insprired me to start:

1. Joe Satriani - If it weren't for Motorcycle Driver, I wouldn't be a guitar player.
2. Richie Sambora - Bon Jovi were responsible for my introduction to rock music
3. Steve Vai - Purely for the 'I wanna be able to do that' factor.

The three who have had the most impact on my playing:

1. Joe Satriani
2. Gary Moore (even though I'm no longer a big fan of his stuff)
3. (Probably) Billy Gibbons - used to listen to a hell of a lot of ZZ Top.

My lead style is far more blues-based than my inspiration trinity might lead people to think!

1.
Zakk Wylde - Rock star was the final straw that got me to pick it up
Slash - just rock n roll cool...
Metallica - one of the two of them

2.
Jake E Lee - Technically amazing, flawless playing - my technique aspires to be as precise
Steve Clark - Replaced Slash as the rock n roll cool part. He wrote with emotion
Zakk Wylde - less of an influence now, but can still see his influence in my playing. maybe VH or RR instead though

Ouch, tough one.

Starting out:
Jacob Binzer
Slash
John Fogerty
(I was 11 years old back then, cut me some slack)

Most influencial:
Al di Meola - a style and a sound that really gets to me.
Jason Becker - awe-inspiring in every way. A talent rarely seen, with passion and commitment to music.
Shawn Lane - see above.
Title: Who are your Holy Trinity?
Post by: badgermark on October 24, 2007, 10:11:48 PM
To start: Slash- for looking cool to a 15 year old. Such a tosser though.
John Frusciante- Cool, but could play like a bitch and rocked me so hard, learned a lot from the Off The Map DVD
Kurt Cobain- Made me realise that even someone musically inept like I could play a few chords and write great songs. Very influential and under-rated to most guitarists.

Right now: Hell I don't know. I don't listen to rock music for the guitars anymore. Joseph Arthur and his looping is impressive, Colin Hay and his simple, beautiful songs inspire me, and I'll always have a soft spot for Billy Corgan and his heavy yet tuneful bashings.

Hmmm, to kick off ( and bear in mind that I started out as a bass player) , I would say Ronnie Lane ( Faces) Paul McCartney and on guitar John Lennon ( same thing applies to John as Badgermark says about Cobain-not the greatest player but had a certain something).

Thereafter, major influences, meandering from 6 to 4 strings, Ronnie Wood, Willie Weeks and George Harrison.

1. Santana, EVH (without realising - I just thought the Beat It solo sounded cool before I even knew who played it), cant think of a 3rd

2. Slash, Michael Schenker, Jimmy Page

something like that..

:D E gods me & my big mouth !

When i first started out the 3 for me were

Blackmore
Angus young
Jimmy Page

Now as an older, longer player

Angus/Malcolm Young, if i could be just one guitarist for a night i`d choose Malcolm Young. He must have the molst fun job in R `n`R. Doesn`t have to run around just stands there & pounds out riff after riff, lucky sod !!

Satriani, i wish i could play with his fluedity over the instrument.

EVH, fire & brimstone, flash & bash all rolled into one !

Started me off:

Slash (popular, isn't he?), Steve Clarke (coolest effer ever), Steve Vai

Biggest effect on me since:

Probably Slash again, Vai again (odd combo, i know), and Hendrix.  i know there's only meant to be three, but also James Hetfield.   i can't actually play like any of them mind!

These guys got me started, in other words my top 3 pre-guitar playing heroes:
Brian May, Ace Frehley and Scott Ian.

Since I got my first plywood Marlin guitar, these guys have inspired me most:
Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and James Hetfield.

The three players who made you start playing in the first place:
1. Kirk Hammett/James Hetfield
2. Slash
3. I can't even remember

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:

this is a hard one...
1. Kirk Hammett
2. Criss Oliva
3. Warren Haynes

Kirk Hammett is on the first spot only cuz Metallica is just simply the band whose stuff I've learned the most, so the influence is obvious that way, he ain't my favourite guitarist or anything

In future I hope it would look something like this:
1. Alex Skolnick
2. David Gilmour
3. Criss Oliva

not in order:

Started me playing:
Tony Iommi, Fast Eddie, Brian Tatler

Greatest effect on my playing:
Tipton/Downing, Pete Townshend, Tony Iommi

My brother played me Motorhead, and I thought - "mmmm guitar based rock actually rules". Then I listened to Sabbath and Diamond Head obsessively for 3 months and decided I had to learn. I would have brought an SG, but I saw a Flying V first, and obvious Tatler played one from time to time.

Hard for me to seperate Tipton and Downing as I dont know who exactly writes what in the tracks. I think Tipton has the edge playing wise, Downing is more stylish though ;) I love Townshends rhythm improvisation and chordal solos, I'm always ripping him off. Brought a Sabbath song book to learn guitars, I guess all my riffs are evolved Sabbath riffs in some sort of way.

Some great musicians mentioned in this thread.

Great thread!  Interesting themes cropping up, like how influential Slash is/was.

For me, I started played classical guitar when I was very young so I'll tweak the question slightly:

The three players who made you start playing (electric guitar) in the first place:
1. Slash - THE reason I wanted to play electric guitar
2. Jimi Hendrix - so, so far ahead of his time and hugely influential to eveyone afterwards
3. Eric Clapton - I admired the variety of styles he plays/played

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:
1. Stevie Ray Vaughan - it's that big chunky rhythm sound and aggressive soloing, my all time hero
2. Malcolm Young - tone, tone, tone, tone and rhythm in abundance
3. Angus Young - blues/rock major/minor pentatonic with vibrato at its finest

OK, my holy trinity (very difficult)

Got me started:
1. Marco Pirroni (Adam & The Ants) - Not flash, but they were the band that kick-started my love of guitar music when I was 9.
2. Steve Rothery (Marillion) - The raw emotion this man can get into a guitar solo is amazing.
3. Yngwie Malmsteen - The final straw that made me pick a guitar up.  Scary and inspiring at the same time.

Biggest influence:
1. Steve Vai - I love his whole attitude to the guitar and music in general.  I also love how he knows when to play fast, and when not too as well (something a lot of shredders forget)
2. Jake E. Lee - More for his Badlands stuff than with Ozzy, love that raw bluesy feel.  Seeing them live in a tiny, tiny club and being able to stand right in front of him during the set was awesome.
3. Angus Young - Just everything really.  The vibrato, the aggression, the mad stage presence.

The three players who made me start playing in the first place:

Ritchie Blackmore
Michael Schenker
Mark Knopfler
*

* I never was a fan as such, but Sultans of Swing was the first record where I actually thought "ah, that's a guitar making that sound".  Obviously I was aware that people made records with guitars, but I'd never really thought about it before.

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on me:

Roy Buchanan
Ritchie Blackmore
Carlos Santana

Just to explain that, I never actually got to the stage of being a good player - never did the 12 hours a day practice, bleeding fingers stuff.  Too lazy, too talentless.  I just noodle around and make up riffs really.

So although there are countless players I love to listen to, there aren't many I can actually hear in my own playing.  Roy Buchanan is one - for the way he got so many different tones just by varying his picking attack/technique and the way he bent the strings; I actually tried to emulate that.  Santana for his tone - that fat, singing neck pickup tone is the one I hear in my head.  And Blackmore just for being God to the 15-year-old that still lives in my head somewhere.

Here's my list...

1. Slash
2. James Hetfield
3. Dave Mustaine

Now...

1. Brent Hinds (Mastodon)
2. Matt Pike (High on Fire / Sleep)
These two draw heavy influences from each other and but it ultimately all stems from "old school" Metallica
3. Kirk Windstein (Crowbar / Down)

But I also like really like the old favourites like Clapton, Hendrix, SRV, Green, Moore, BFG, Iommi.

The three players who made me start playing in the first place:

Steve Harris - Yup I started as a bass player and bought a P Bass!
Adrian Smith - I still want a white Jackson Strat so much..
Paul Stanley - I learnt how to pout, lust after BC Rich and play Lick it up before I knew a scale..

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on me:

Joe Satriani
John Sykes
Paul Gilbert

(I'd forgive people for not correlating my skills with any of these artists but I DO try!)

The three players who made me start playing in the first place:

1. Knofler - Kinda the first guitarist stuff I listened to
2. Angus Young - My bother introduced me to Ac Dc (kinda what started
me playing electric..the reason I own a SG)
3. Robbie Robertson - Dad influence I guess

As I grew up a bit still loved the above but

1. Slash or Joe perry - was that era
2. Neil Schon - I was young (still like Journey and early Santana)
3. Steve Rothery - Still love the Brave album

Now would still say all th above influence me but

1. Frascati
2. Martin Barre - Love Tull stuff
3. Bonnamasa - kinda a new one to me but is great

Made me start:
herm, just trying to remember what I was listening to aged 12... shite it's gone fast.
1) Kurt Cobain. Nirvana were the first band I really got into. I remember having Nevermind confiscated from me, and being totally pissed off with the teacher who nicked it.
2) Chuck Berry. My parents had got a video of a concert of his from somewhere, and I used dance away to roll over beethoven aged about 4. Didn't directly start me off on guitar, but that was probably the start of my love of guitar music.
3) Brian May. For compiling the best air guitar albums in the world... ever, even though I didn't really get into queen for a couple of years later.

Biggest influence on me:
1) Jack White. 2 months after I started, I got elephant for christmas and spent the next 6 months learning it cover to cover. His style has never really left me.
2) The Youngs. My other major riff influence, Most of the music I write sits somewhere between ACDC and the white stripes.
3) Hendrix. When I solo I aim for Hendrix, and usually hit as far as sounding rather messy and out of tune is concerned. Sounding anywhere near as good is a totally different matter.

Pete townshend is beginning to creep in as well.

Only one guitarist got me started (I was only 10 :) ) and thats Hank Marvin.. I'm amazed he didn't get more (any!) mentions here but i guess its an age thing - not that I was around in his heyday myself..sorry rambling now....

The 3 that had the most influence on where I am is tough but i would go for:

Dave Gilmour - The Wall and particulalry Education solo just opened my eyes to possibilities, and that solo still gets me every time :)

Ritchie Blackmore - the man in black with a white strat - how I hankered after a white strat for years...and I still don't have one! :(

Joe Satriani - more of an influence on taking me back to instrumental music rather than my playing per se.

There's a certain breed of 50-something guitarist who's hugely into Hank and no-one else - has to have exactly the right salmon pink (or is it fiesta red?) Strat, Vox amp and all that gubbins.  Not that there's anything wrong with that.

I don't think we have anyone in that category on the forum, but they'd probably be very happy with a set of Apaches.  :D

I would think all the metal head gain monkeys here would scare such people away

I like Hank, I prefer US 60s Surf stuff (the amount of ££$$££ on tracking down obscure surf cds is silly) - its just none of the guitarists of that era (who were all about 15 at the time) inspire me as a guitarist, even if its what I play most of the time.

I would also say that imo Mother's Milks are better for surf guitar than Apaches.

Tony Iommi is the #1 reason for me getting into guitar and the #1 influence on my playing.  I remember sitting there playing Atari while my dad was in the other room blasting the Master of Reality album.  From that point on my dad's tapes would disappear....

Other great influences in no order
Adrian Smith
Kirk Hammett
Dimebag
Dave Mustaine
Scott Ian

 yeah, I dont fit into that catergory on several counts, but Hank could rock - 'Warlord' was my first taste of rock guitar I would think, and the 2 string harmony stuff - a great intro to melody and harmony :)

PS - I think it was salmon pink for the real original (although of course for the really hard core it would have to be a Burns :) )

Fender never made a guitar in Salmon Pink: it was not a dupont hot rod colour option - it was always Fiesta Red.

With Hanks and a few others, either the paint was mixed wrongly or, more likely, Fender did a rush job (something that was relatively common) and forgot to put a Fullerplast undercoat on the guitar causing the paint to react different with the wood and lacquer.

The three players who made you start playing in the first place:
1. Michael Nesmith
2. John Lennon
3. Jerry Garcia

Kind of a weird threesome there ... I never listened to contemporary rock/pop until I was a teen, and then for some bizarre reason I started by getting into mid-60s stuff. Totally dug the Beatles and Papa Nez's country-rock stylings in the Monkees!  Then I started getting into psychedelia and stuff and the Grateful Dead totally captivated me.

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:
1. Jerry Garcia
2. Dave Brock
3. Tony Iommi

Also a bit strange there .... Jerry's improvisional influence has always stuck with me since the beginning. Dave Brock taught me how to do a lot with a little (handy, given my non-existent practice regimen! ;)). And, of course, Iommi imparted a love of the giant power-chord RIFF.  8)

I think those 3 are not necessarily the same as the 3 players whom I most admire, but for better worse I think they've had the biggest effect!

That said ... though I started with stringed instruments by playing guitar, I think I've become more of a bass player. (Or at least my suckiness is less obvious when I'm a bass player! ;)) So ....

The bass player who made you start playing in the first place:
1. Lemmy

His playing in Hawkwind, actually, rather than Motorhead. I heard the solo in "Time We Left (This World Today" on Doremi Fasol Latido and I thought: I must learn to do that!

The three bass players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:
1. Lemmy
2. Allen Woody
3. Geezer Butler

I'm a transplanted guitarist, of sorts, so I believe in fat, overdriven bass played with a pick that either supports the riff or churns along under (and sometimes over) it.  8)

The three players who to date have had the greatest effect on you:

Steve Jones

And Jimi Hendrix

John Squire

Scott Ian and loads more, even Randy Rhodes

Good to see Marco Pirroni in there, he had a good sound and some good riffs.

Oh man.  I love D-A-D so much.  Seriously underated band.  I've managed to catch them a few times when they've played in London, and it's always been great fun to be surrounded by totally mad Danes who've travelled over to see them in a small venue.  :D

We aren't that mad  :P

The ones I ended up drinking way too much beer with at the D-A-D gigs were.  ;)

Ah man. I've seen them 11 times now. First time was when I was 6 (or 7, can't remember). Haven't outside of Denmark though. Great gigs all of them.

Ace, EVH, and R Rhoads made me pick up a tennis racket and jump around in front of the mirror(I had 113 KISS posters as a young 'un...)

Page, Rhoads , and Dickie Betts have had the influence...(A special thanks the Wolf Marshall and Andy Aledort-the premiere teacher/transcribers who have been published thousands of times in Guitar World/etc...never would have stuck with it as a lefty who could not find/afford lessons....)

They were always fantastic live whenever I saw them.  And it was great wondering before the gig what crazy outfit Stig (he of the 2 string basses) would be wearing this time.

The three players who made me start playing
1. Richie Sambora - He made me want to be as cool as he was
2. Nuno Bettencourt - at the time I couldn't believe the taste & technique
3. Audley Freed - I heard the 1st Cry of Love album & that was it!

The three players who've had the greatest effect
1. Rory Gallagher - The man is a monster, for me he had everything
2. Rich Robinson - I hate to admit it as usually I'm a lead guitar lover, but the way he's crafted songs is brilliant...guitar orchestration
3. Paul Kossoff - For everything...for the feel & tone of playing guitar

here endth the lesson

made me want to play:

EVH. I heard eruption, and decided then and there I was going to learn to play. Up till that point I'd only really heard indie guff... I guess honourable mentions go to vai and malmsteen too.

Current influences:

EVH, eric johnson, pretty tough to pick a third but let's go with reb beach (could've gone to srv, nuno, friedman, several other players).

The new one is the coolest. The headstock-shaped bass with a bass shaped headstock.
