Post by: hunter on October 25, 2007, 03:12:38 PM
... it came over me again ... just hit "buy now" on the bay for this beauty direct from Nippon ...

How can I explain it to the Missus ?  :?

edit: it's an aged Jimmy Page Relic Edwards 112, weighing in 3.5 Kg and a 1pc mahogany back and neck and long tenon brand new etc ...

Get the Black Dogs in it  ;)

nope

I don't like the quality of push pull pots anyway. Might do the switching myself using mini switches like EL Jimmy ...

edit: I think more about Mules actually, let's first see how those Duncans suck, then I will upgrade shortly

:o that would be a bold move, though i can't see the Edwards being shite haha so maybe it is time for the old Epiphone to make way.

i don't think she would have the mindset to appreciate an aged relic finish like on this one ... actually she wouldn't appreciate any guitar, even a PRS Modern Eagle Brazilian 10top limited edition handmade prefactory unplayed.

You'd have to be an idiot not to appreciate a prefactory Modern Eagle - They don't even exist!

Agreed, they have a nasty wobbly feel and the pot part doesn't usually work very well.  Keep it simple!

Yeah I did think of you when I  closed the deal Philly - can't wait to lay my hands on it and experience myself - very curious to see the aging, as that is very hard to tell in pictures. Seen the Vintage Peter Green last week and it looked wrong in many ways ... will see soon ...

They are great looking guitars, the aging is a little artificial when compared to how Fender or Gibson do it but with a lacquer top it should wear in nicely. Edwards have some new darker burst LPs (sorry I don't know the correct name for the colour) that are tempting me.
Title: I feel very guilty ...
Post by: hunter on October 26, 2007, 01:12:38 PM
Gingataff, why don't you take some orders from us here and then come over to Europe, pretending you're a rock star on tour and all these guitars are your live rig, so no customs/VAT needed?

Would be fab, and it would generate lots of business for the BareKnuckles, as all the Japanese strings would be in need for some British pickups

SWEET niiiice one hunter. I'm sure you'll be super-pleased with it (even if the wife isn't). Thing to do is hide ur epi, and say you sold a guitar (she'll be suprised and love you) - then when the new one comes, she won't mind too much because you've replaced ur shiny epi with a 'cr@ppy old guitar' - that was clearly dead cheap. Then if you really like the edwards, sell the epi...

Could work?
Welcome to Club Edwards!

It looks a bit like the relic job on my Tokai - not that realistic, but pleasing to the eye anyway  ;)

I really like my Tokai - you don't have to worry about adding any more dings!

I read somewhere that they spray clear finish on these guitars after they do the relicing, which is a bit weird  :? .  But apparently the nitro finish wears in quite quickly, and then the relicing looks a lot more authentic.

I've seen some aged Japanese Strats where the relicing looked very fake - they'd just scr@ped lots of paint off all over the place and it looked nothing like natural wear patterns.  The JP LPs all seem to have the same relicing, so I guess they're copied from pics of his actual guitar.

It can't be easy to do an authentic relic finish.  I saw one of those Fender Rory Gallagher Tribute Strats up close, and it looked pretty phoney to be honest.

Post by: Twinfan on October 26, 2007, 03:56:41 PM
There's a pair of the new Fender "Heavy Relic" Strats in my local music shop at the moment.  The wear on them looks awful given how much they cost - the Vintage brand Strats look very similar for one tenth of the price!

Post by: Philly Q on October 26, 2007, 04:21:22 PM
The early Fender Relics were great though, before they got complicated and started offering all the Time Machine and Closet Classic options.

I had a chance to buy a lovely lightweight sunburst '62 Relic Strat for £800 at a guitar show years ago, but while I was wandering around thinking about it someone else got it.  I've never seen one at that kind of price since (although I haven't really been looking).

About the feeling guilty towards spending money on yourself i would suggest to just get over that, life will become much easier.

My wife isnt always that happy about the things i buy, but she knows i wont spend too much and thats enough for her, sometimes she does complain because we have other plans for the money and then i pass the GAS. If passing the GAS isnt an option i would probably show her the edwards but with the gibson logo and price tag, it does work with mine, well a bit...

Wonderfull axe, hope to hear a clip soon

Honestly Tom, Ishibashi isn't dodgy at all.  Yes, their site is hard to understand but - stating the obvious - it's Japanese   .

If you want to buy something - even if you can't find it on the site - the thing to do is to click on the "English" link and send them an email.  They'll get back to you with a price, a shipping quote and a link for making a secure credit card payment (they don't charge the card until the item ships).

The staff speak (or write!) very good English, keep you informed about progress of your order and you deal with the same person throughout the process (I'm sure all the lady assistants are incredibly cute too, but that may be my imagination running away with itself  ).  They're 10 times better than most UK music shops I've dealt with.

edit - nevermind found the english page, just need to find the Les Pauls now :P

This page (http://www.ishibashi.co.jp/webshop/guitar/esp/edwards/index.htm) lists all their Edwards stuff (I think), it's in Japanese but if you click on the individual items there are some details in English.  They can get hold of other models which aren't necessarily listed.

Then the "In English" link at the top right of the page takes you to the page with the English email address.

I find Les Pauls can be a bit bright sometimes.  A full chunky mahogany body should be SMOOOOOOOOOOOOOTH......

Gibson also made an all mahagony les paul in week 33 (guitar of the week series), i tried it a few weeks ago and it was really nice, its now offered at a discount price( about 1000 english pounds), tempting tempting.

A mahagony top really smoothens things out i agree, but its still alot of cash allthough the resale value will probably be way better then an edwards i suppose.

Just picked up my Jimmy Page Edwards. First impression after tuning up and having a go for about 20 minutes: Awesome!!!! And it is so light !!!!! Gotta go to rehearsal now, will write a more detailed review.

I guess it will get BKPs, at least in the bridge, but let's give those Duncans a try first, then I can still decide.

Ok, I've been through one rehearsal now, and I have to say that this guitar plays in a completely different league than my Epiphone or PRS SE singlecuts. The relic job is very authentic, all my band members thought I'd have bouhgt a 30 year old Les Paul. Love the looks and feel of this laquer finish, too. The instrument is much lighter than Epi or Baja, so I am moving much more while playing, it is responsive, snappy, crunchy, has so much clarity and treble - I guess it's the first time also I played rhythm actually on the "rhythm" pickup of a Les Paul.

It has a very chimey clean sound, even more so than my Baja Tele I think (might be wrong), and I can actually hear all details of multi string chords, which is actually very inspiring and makes me experiment much more.

This might all be the honeymoon effect and maybe I'll have a different opinion next week (wouldn't be the first time   ) but I think I was very lucky and got a guitar that's much better than its price tag makes you think. It fits my style perfectly. Maybe a different bridge pickup will be apropriate - the SH-5 is a bit fizzy here and there, but at the moment I am enjoying the crispness of the overall instrument too much to change anything.

I will post clips to ask for advise on which pickup to use.

Your description of your Edwards makes it sound very much like my Tokai Relic.  That guitar is very light, bright and clear.  I currently have an AIV Mule in the bridge and an AIV Stormy Monday on order for the neck.

The Tokai's bridge pickup sounds very different to the Mule in my Gibson - differences in weight/wood of the guitars coming into play here.  I like the contrast of the different LPs though.  My Tokai sounds like a bright SG and my Gibson sounds like four bright SGs running in parallel

If you want to keep the clarity, and still have something different to your other guitars, I'd suggest maybe a pair of AIV Stormy Mondays?

Might be, but I have to say, it's not just bright, it's instead clear but has enough bottom end, but it's not a booming bottom, it's a tight low end.

Also the guitar just plazs so damn well. I realise that I don't like the high frets on most of my guitars. The Edwards came with frets that were rather low, like a guitar that has been played quite a bit. It is much easier to play.

Major benchmark: Suddenly those Page-licks are running off my fingers much smoother and easier, and the transparency is there to make those chords really blossom. The pickups are a bit bland, but the acoustic sound of the guitar is just so much better.

I am now officially joining Phillys Edwards fan club, that's for sure!
