Title: Another new guitar day (late as usual)
Post by: Henk on October 26, 2007, 02:36:51 PM
Im a bit late with posting a pic of my new guitar i bought a couple of weeks ago, allthough i can now add a pic.

I have allways been a huge fan of Gibson's SG model, still i always had great difficulty finding a really exeptional one. With LP's it seems so much easier..... :)

Anyway i found this very nice user SG, NO its not entirely original, it has a refinished neck, humbucker (not the original mini humbuckers) and it has been altered from a Bigsby model to normal stoptail. It still has the old style tune-o-matic bridge though.

It now has a couple of Dimarzio PAF Pro's in it, the bridge Pup is bad and i still want the repair from the Bigsby refinished. The repairs/refinsh have been done professionally by someone who is building for many years, the neck feels so much better now. Thats the one downside to old guitars, the neck finish wears and becomes less smooth.

Its a 1974 SG, but is made late 1973 (potdate september '73), has .33 caps which work great IMO.

I select a guitar on their acoustic clarity and sustain which must be perfect IMO, the strange thing about this guitar is that it has a ebony fretboard instead of the usual rosewood one, which happens sometimes when they ran low on stock.

And thats it about this one, wonderfull clear and smoothly sustained acoustic tone, does fit well with the Paf's but you can imagine i have another line of pickups in mind for this baby   . Its hard to figure out which BKP's should get a place in there, im thinking Blackdogs or VHII's but im still not sure.

On the background of the pic you can see my Marshal late 60's cab "the Queen" with original greenbacks and my '85 JCM800 (2205 model) which is called "the king" obviously.

Anyway thanks for reading and please excuse the poor english and bad photo.

Lovely!   :D

Gotta be a set of Riff Raffs though, hasn't it?

That is nice!
The smaller block inlays add a unique touch, looks nicer on the lower frets than the normal huge ones

Is the Nitro finish ok on that stand?

Oh wow - lucky, lucky guy.

I had one almost exactly like that (but IIRC mine had rw fretboard & covered pickups).  Always liked the small inlays on the 70s SGs better than the trapezoid ones.  Very, very nice, distinctive SG you got there.... :jealous: :)

Very nice SG, I am a fan on paper and my ears like them, just too cumbersome on a strap and the neck is to small. Damn you Gibson and your <25" necks!

And Henk your English is fine, much better than most native speakers when they post online.

Thanks for the intrest guys,

@Philly

I had Gibson 57 classics in there but they lack output to complement the characteristics of the guitar, its sounding scratchy with those and thats absolutely not what it sounds like acoustically.

So i think im looking for a 10k neck and 12k bridge or there about. I also would like tons of dynamics and harmonics to noodle with. And want to have a relatively bright neck pu. I even dont mind the neck pu giving more output then the bridge one because i like playing leads on the neck pu better anyway.

Since i mostly write the songs for projects i do rather focus on the rythm section, long solo's are not my cup of tea. So i would want my bridge PU set on chordwork rather than lead.

How that for an answer to your suggestion

@Will

Yes its ok, allthough i have to put i down carefully so it wont sit on the knobs.

Fit.

I like Dimarzio but the PAF Pro's suck ass.

I vote for COLD SWEATS!

Thanks for your comments, im glad you guys can appreciate the oldies allthough it wont win a beautycontest it sounds simply ADDICTIVE!

Anyway, i stayed up late last night to rethink the pickup options i have and tried to decide on matters rather then hopeing one pickup can do it all

Since the VHII-SG combi will have a too heavy attack(IMO) that option is out, probably i need to be looking at lower output pups because i dont want the pup to be too influential either. So after listening to many clips i have narrowed it down to this.

Neck: Mule AIV

Bridge: AV magnet pup, so probably Blackdog or maybe Riff Raff or i dont know if thats possible, a Mule AV?

Anyone have paired the Mule AIV with one of these?

Anyway, the mule AIV Neck should match up best as far as i can hear from the clips. I need a well balanced bridge pickup with good harmonic properties which is not too heavy on the mids. Another way to go could be to accentuate the SG's attack and put a Riff Raff in there, but im afraid it will not fit my needs directly.

Im really ashamed to know so little about pickups, its a good thing that i have the opportunity to read so much about them here.

PS. i play anything from 'bar blues' trough 60's garage/folk rock and then straight trough to 80's Trash. I still do need excellent clean tones though.

A further option that you didn't list would be the Emerald with the Mule neck.  I have this in a Zemaitis metal front clone and it sounds great.  The Emerald will get all the harmonics you need, and in combination with the AIV Mule, gives almost a Peter Green sound.

With the Riff Raff bridge, I like the Stormy Monday AIV neck, I think it balances better than a Mule and gives a nice contrast.  The SM is a fantastic sounding pickup, I have an AII set in my 335 and an AIV in one Les Paul, and the PG Blues set in another.

I find the Emerald to have more 'muscle' then 'bite', and i want 'bite' if you understand what i mean, but not overdone. The attack on my SG is allready so strong, even with the slow dimazio pafs.

I love the alnico II sound of my '57 classic pafs, but have them in a beat up 80's LP Classic which makes them sound really 'earthy' with a bit of a tubular 'zing' when put trough my JCM800. I prefer P90's in a semiacoustic.

Im looking for a strong tone, when compared to the LP standard's 406R/498T, more open sounding and more organic sounding so a beefed up PAF in a modern jacket.

I also want to try the AlnicoIV because i dont have a pickup with that magnet, still want to pair it with an alnicoV for the bridge so ill get an relatively bright neck PU. Or am i mistaking about that?
