Found these great video lessons on the Modes and ideas on how to use them to your benefit.

Nothing came up in a search (which admittedly is not not saying much being a phpBB forum), so hopefully nobody's posted these before. :)

I'm more confused now after watching those vids than I was before (with regard to modes). I've got no idea how they (modes) work and can't see how I'd incorporate them into my playing.
-
HTH - In layman's terms they're more dynamic sounding scales.
Aeolian, Dorian and Mixolydian all the way.
-
I should think that many could benefit from watching those-especially me.
-
excellent, thanks for posting those. I love modes, even if 99.9% of the time i'm playing in minor pentatonic.
other thoughts:
- dodgy wall covering.
- terrible hat.

The series by Bridgit Mermikides in last years Guitar Techniques mag was the bestest thing I have ever read on modes - it treated them as being pentatonic with added notes and gave you the chords that each mode works over, so that you could understand what you be playing over. Well worth hunting down. I tend to use major pentatonic with an added b7 - the mixolydian lite scale.
-
I agree about the hat, it's terrible!
But yeah he knows his theory and it's pretty cool, i should know most of this as my college course goes on as the guitar tutor can't stand people not knowing their theory haha.
-
Just watched it - Forgot how absolutely superb a guitarist Joe Satriani is.
Such fluidity - Wish I could play my modes like that.
-
yeah satch is awesome. :)

Phrygian dominant > you. :P

:D is it possible you could scan those articles onto your computer & post `em up for us ?

Modes are great. its also known as playing Major over Minor Chords, my only problem with it is working out what chords to use so i can play the damn things hence if you could post the article dude it`d really help !

Phrygian dominant > you. :P
The Harmonic minor modes are awesome.
-
I know sod all music theory, but I found those very interesting. Like Dave, I play minor pentatonic most of the time, although a player who is well up on his theory told me I use the Ionian mode when I improvise, even though I have no idea what it is!
-
I tend to move between major/minor quite alot - been told I use the Mixolydian mode/scale (whatever it is).

:D Actually that Satriani clips are great very inspireing ! I`ve also got the Lick Library DVD of modes & thats really good to well worth checking out.
