Title: Roccaforte Question
Post by: Illini_Inn81 on October 27, 2007, 07:00:39 PM
I am looking into buying a new amp and I have heard good things about Roccaforte.  I currently own a Marshall JCM 800 and I love the distortion; however, I hate the clean sound, it is so sterile and flat.  I have heard the Roccaforte can give a good Marshall-like distortion but with great clean but I am unsure of what kind to get.  I have looked into the Jennelle 80/100, DRRS, Custom 80, etc.  Does anyone have any suggestions???  Thanks.

It's a common problem with JCM800s, they sound great dirty but people always complain about the cleans.  However, you're gonna find it hard to get anything to match the JCM800's OD tone.

You want my opinion? - get another amp for cleans, buy a head-switcher and run them into the same cab.

You could have something like a Selmer T&B or a SF Dual Showman head - a vintage amp with great cleans.

Thanks for your response, I appreciate the information, I have thought about getting a clean amp and just switching back and forth but I like to travel lite.  The less gear I can carry around and still achieve a great tone, the better as far as I am concerned.  However, I still didn't get an answer to my question which was is there a Roccaforte amp that can give me a sound similar to the JCM800 as well as provide a nice clean channel.

The clips at the Rocccaforte amps site impressed me alot. But, since they sound vinatge Marshally, I doubt they will have a super clean sound.

You migt want to check out the Fender Supersonic or some Rivera amps.

I agree. That's what you usually see on stage if someone plays an 800 and also does clean sounds, they have a Fender or sth at the side of it.

An amp that does the flavour of the 800 and great cleans would be an Orange Rockerverb or Bogner Shiva, but both are not great for Metal kind of drive.

Maybe a Cornford? A Rivera, yeah, well there  are lots of makers but I agree that Roccafortes look to me also more like one trick poneys.

For what you are looking to do, there are two amps to look at:

Roccaforte, and Splawn.

Happy hunting!

Just buy a POD XT Live and use it for cleans. Simple. Goes into PA

There are MANY MANY amps in that kinda area/price to look at for Marshall dirt to clean.

Bogner
Reinhardt
Rivera
Laney
Egnator
etc. etc. etc.

I have owned/do won two of those mentioned, Rivera and Bogner and BOTH have super clean fenderesque cleans to all out Marshall dirt.

Lotta ground there to research bud.

you know, doug roccaforte frequents the harmony-central forums, and could probably steer you in the right direction. He's given me loads of advice, and never really tries to sell his stuff, i guess its good enough to sell itself.

All of the reviewers say the clean tone was surprisingly good.... much more SRV-like than they all thought possible from EL34s.

I want a DRRS myself!

If you really just want a clean tone like an older Marshall, like a 1959SLP or EL34 plexi, you may also like the Bogner Shiva.  It actually has a decent amount of gain too, and actually a lot of chug even for a lower gain amp.

I still want a DRRS or maybe a Custom 80 myself...
