Title: New amp for me.
Post by: AH^DK on October 30, 2007, 12:14:06 PM
Hey,

As I am getting my new Les Paul Standard soon, I want a new amp as well with it.

I currently have JCM2000 DSL 100watt head with a Marshall 1982B 4x12" with 100watt celestion speakers in it, giving a total of 400watt speaker power.

I like my JCM2000 alot, but I cant get that really warm metal crunch out of it, that I want.

The kinda sound I am looking for is like the one on records like Dio - Holy Diver and especially Thin Lizzy - Thunder And Lightning.

At 2:12 in this video, you can really hear the kind of sound I want.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=Q6E5Il_VNEs the classic sound I want.

Also I have allways liked Sykes sound on Whitesnakes 1987 record.

In short, a real 80s heavy metal sound that thick, bright and aggressive in the mids.

I was thinking of a 1959 reissue, 1987X reissue or a JCM800 2203 reissue.

I cant get splawn etc in Denmark unfortunately, plus I would allways prefer "real" Marshalls.

Anyways, what amp am I looking for?

I will put pedals in front of it to push it :)

Thanks.

Sounds to me like you need a JCM800!

I know you can't get a Splawn but that would nail it!  I can get the tone on my Silver Jubilee with the Twilight Drive into it and I have heard Tim get it from my MiniMat into an Ear Candy Sovereign!!  I think possibly the Kerry King Marshall would get you it.  Since you are in Europe, another amp that I have heard TwilightOdyssey play and get  that tone is the Diezel VH4 (I think that is the model, TO would be able to confirm).

If you cant afford much, Laney GH are really nice amps for a british voiced tone. See my sig for loads of clips, mostly done with the GH and an SM57 straight into the soundcard. Not quite as upper middy or agressive as a Marshall, but that may be due to me using 2xG12H speakers, maybe with a V30 it'd have a bit more roar to it. My mates got a DSL50 and the GH50L eats it for breakfast :D

This clip probably has the closest sound to what you're trying to get http://www.soundclick.com/bands/songInfo.cfm?bandID=493678&songID=5417089

I use this:
Charvel 375 superstrat with Duncan Fullshred.
Fender Strat HWY1 with Duncan APS-1 singles in neck/middle and Duncan JB in bridge.

Boss DS-1.
MXR Distortion+
Boss SD-1
MXR Distortion III
Rocktron Tsunami Chorus
Morley Wah.

So I have alot of distortions to choose between.

One crucial tone I forgot to mention is the mid 80s tone that Gary Moore had. All that aggressiveness, and warmth and thickness is insane.

My Les Paul will be a custom or standard, I havent choosed yet. Probably with a set of BN Cold Sweats or Holy Divers.

I might have a deal, with a dude who will trade his 1989 JCM800 2203 for my DSL100 head. Should I jump this deal?

I know, but half of those cost an arm and a leg here.

I didnt know the Vintage Modern would be good for this kinda thing?

I called on the 2203. We made a deal, and on the 30th of November, I will pick it up. I got some info..

Marshall JCM800 2203, made in 1988. Preamp re-tubed in April.

Traded my 4month old JCM2000 DSL 100 for it.

So... This shall get me plenty a 80s metal sound

Make sure it isnt modded, it will run up the tab if you want to 'unmod' it. Im not the biggest fan of the 2203, but you will definately nail that tone. Probably with eq set to neutral and gain just over 7 youll be back in the '80 rockin' the hell out of that rig.

Still the jcm800 you are getting should be in damn good shape for that trade. Ask for the service bill too, some people say anything for a couple of bucks.

If al is good, congrats on a fine piece of gear!

THe thing is, he wants DSL 100 really bad. I saw him on the forum that I am on, and even before he wanted to sell this amp, he talked about JCM2000s like mad.

The only flaw is a scratchy volume pot. He says it makes the volume abit flakey though... Is this just the pot?

It is not modded or anything, completely stock.

Ask him to have the pot replaced by a pro

I think a DSL100 new price is not so cheap that it should be swapped against a scratchy pots head.

I get a nice warm sounds from my DSL with my Gibson SG and MXR Distortion+ like this -

MXR Distortion+ in the effects loop, Output about 2 o'clock, Distortion about 10/11.

Then I always have the "Deep" switch on, Presence around 4 (no longer clock like, the actual numbers) Treble 9, Mid 6, Bass 6/7. Gain full up on the Ultra Gain channel.

Sounds suuhweet  :D

Gary used JCM 2000 at a gig in Skive yesterday, and he had an excellent tone.

I also think he used BKPs

Yeah, Gary used to use JCM 800's, and it's what Campbell used(prop), so you should like it very much. It's got the classic rock raunch for Lizzy, Moore, that we both love, and with a booster (od, eq, booster, etc) it will give various great harder rock tones (I have no idea Campbell's pedals) from Zakk to Slayer to everybody else in the eighties.
Just get it!!   :D    :o    :(

Hmm I need boost for it, to hit the level of gain for Sykes and Campbell.

I have thought of a old Boss OD-1, as I have found one and heard alot of good stuff about it for a 80s metal sound or a MXR ZW. Which one of these would be best? Or a SD-1? Or OD-3 perhaps?Or the Zvex box of rock?

Well, the SD-1 is the most neutral booster, will give you an additional tone control, nicely versatile.

OD-1, this is my baby, its the brightest of them all, great bite and excellent full range booster (a tone control also has a downside like some people seem to forget all the time GRRRRR!!! ). If you like that high tuby 'zing' in your harmonics i would advice you to try this one first. When used as a booster it will boost especialy high mids.

OD-3, somewhat warmer but still nice and open sounding, bit more bluesy. More of an overdrive pedal then a booster, sounds better then a bluesdriver and is more suitable for it IMHO. Maybe the best allrounder overdrive if you dont want a 'perfect' booster.

Well thats about my take on it. Ow and if you are able to buy a good OD-1 at reasonable price, go for it because it seems to be harder to get one every year.

tbh, splawn's are the most overrated piece of cr@p in the world.. no bottom end, loads of agressive mids and so much treble that it hurts your ears to play.

but thats just my opinion, I've had people play on my splawn just before I sold it and absolutely cream all over it.

JCM800 way to go imo.

I just saw this and i find it hard to belief it got new tubes and didnt get new pots, scratchy pots on an amp are just the most irritating things there are.

Cool.

I like a real high middy sound, kinda like John Sykes has. But I still want plenty of low mids and bottom end, just not too much to get it woofy.

Okay I just ordered a black label 1980 DS-1 with the old style thumbscrew, and a OD-1 from 1979 with black label and old style thumbscrew.

Gonna be great I think :D

Ohhh so it's not just the clips...
I thought that everyone with a splawn was simply cr@p at mic positioning or something, lol.

You can offcourse add any amount of low end in your amp. The lack of a tone control on the OD-1 is only anoying when you want to switch to a clean channel which uses the same eq setting.

If you want to try my powercord setting, its both level and gain at 2:00-3:00 and my amp set to a moderate gain setting, kind of a rythm blues/rock tone. You can also use this setting for screaming bridge solo's or chucky neck lead. This would work with most vintage type overdrives/marshall combinations i think.
