haven't done any recording in a while, felt like it. couldn't think of anything to record though so everything (besides mr. crowley) is just me playing whatever i could think of. i've been learning the first solo to mr. crowley, not quite there, but i think i'm getting there. all the new clips are the ones titled riff1-5 and then mr. crowley. i think the lower numbered ones are better.
thoughts...

Well, the ideas are quite good, but there are some technique problems. And I think you should back down the gain a little, and possibly lower the pu height, to avoid microphony.
Keep it up :)

yeah i know the techniques not great. what were you thinking though? i'd like to know which parts you thought sounded bad or what i'm doing wrong... try to correct it.
and if by microphony, you're talking about the feedback, thats by ZW OD pedal with a dying battery. squeals like a pig if the battery ain't brand new. that was only on in one or two of the clips though, so maybe thats not what you're talking about?
-
Yes, feedback, lol. Microphony would be a direct translation from Croatian.
Well, you seem to drop out of tempo every now and then (mostly Riff3)
Overall, i think you need to practice your right hand, it needs to be stronger and tighter. If you need some help, just let me know :)
-
Not than i got any great chops myself, but i think you would benefit from practicing slow, to make sure your playing is clean.
And back down the gain as wintersun said :D

yeah i know i was out of tempo on riff3 for like the first 2 whole minutes. i couldn't get the drum machine to play loud enough for me to hear all that well, but either way yeah i'm bad at playing in tempo. i need to practice with a drummer...
as for some of the sloppy playing, i tend to play real sloppy when i improvise riffs like this. i could probably clean everything up if i re-did all of these.
but, if you have some tips on how i could tighten up the picking attack, please, let me know.

First of all, DON'T practice witha drummer just yet. You need to work it out alone with a metronome.
To tighten up your right hand, just do a lots of palm mutings. Slower, faster, and all with a metronome!
Metronome is a MUST!
Oh yes! UP DOWN UP DOWN. Not just downstrokes! :D

You should have variation, sometimes every beat, sometimes 2 pr. beat etc.
And be sure to keep it on a low speed until you got the riff down, and then slowly increase the speed.

But dont get it too slow! 90 or 100 bpm is good for a start

Slow enough to be in total control 8)

metronomes don't like me. i just broke two A strings, and i don't think i've broken a string in like 2 years...
and by the way, i'm glad you suggested playing with the metronome. i can feel my timing getting better already. and i could tell i was no where close at first. i can play the one note per beat easily. scales i can play one note per beat as fast as the metronome can go, but once i try play riffs and stuff i can't seem to concentrate on the beat and thats how i lose my timing.

Just keep practicing! And don't give up! You should have heard me before, lol. How long have you been playing?

long enough that i should've been using a metronome by now. I guess i've been playing about 4 years, but i never really played much. just within the last couple weeks i'm starting to play a good bit more.

Well then, at least 1 hour a day should do the trick. Never play too much: always keep some for tomorrow. Good luck! If you need some help, you know where to find me :)

i try, problem is between work and school, sometimes theres days where i can't play. i'm looking forward to college next year... (uni as you brits call it?)
oh yeah, forgot to ask... opinions on mr. crowley solo? i thought it was way out of my skill, but i'm working on it, and i think i'm coming along alright...

Well, what can I say. you know you still have a lot to work on. Your skills will improve if you play regulary.

WOWWW. make that 3 strings. jesus.
anyway, i don't know about my timing, haven't tried working with the drum machine again, but i've noticed i'm tapping my foot now when i play, which is good. i have noticed that subconsciously if i'm playing something in a consistent rhythm, and then an off-timing lick or whatever, my foot taps with each beat of that lick, rather that keeping in timing. need to work on that.
also noticed my right hand picking seems much more controlled especially with low E alternate picking.
unfortunately i now have two guitars without A strings....
-
You are probably palm muting them way too hard. You need to find the right balance! I used to break my strings very often until I learned to control the amount of strength used to palm mute. Keep it up :)

man, riff5 sounds like a tortured grunge musician that just joined a noise band tweekin off heroin with a peac--k up his ass. :?

Sorry, I haven't listened to these, but I can pipe up with a tip for practicing your rhythm work:
a) try a riff "as is" - timing each not where it's meant to be.
b) Try syncopating the riff - long note, short note, long note, short note. Think "dummmm de dummmm de dummm de" etc. The same rhythm as "I'm a little tea-" of "I'm a little teapot short and stout"
c) Try syncopating the riff the other way: short note first, then long note. In my terminology above, this is "de dummm de dummm de dummm" etc. In the "teapot" analogy, this would be like putting a BIG accent on the syllables "a", "-tle"
d) go back to part a).
This might not make much sense, it's difficult to describe in words. If you want, I could do a few music files for you to see what I mean. I used to do this when practising the piano and viola, and do now for hard riffs on guitar. Particularly good for stringed instruments, as it gets your right hand and left hand in synch with each other, and helps to tighten the riff up. Best to play it slow like this at first, then again at normal tempo after a few rounds.
Let me know by PM if you want those music files recording with what I mean.

I think we should rather help each other to improve then post stuff like this...

eh, its ok. i didn't realize how bad it sounded until i listened to it again. i actually quite like the riff, but the feedback and off-timing made it sound pretty bad. I'd like to try to record something else that won't sound so bad... maybe i'll go do that now.
-
man i actually kind of like riff5 but i am unsual in my tastes, for most people i think they would put off by the excess of feedback. Its does sound grungy though, thats for sure. The off timed bit however gives it the noise band effect. I appologize for my excessive and possibly offensive analogy, it was 5 in the morning cracked out off of no sleep for the past week (mid-terms), and i was taking a much needed break from homework. Call it a momentary lapse in propriety, or you could just call me a prick (i probably deserve the latter more).
EDIT: I agree that constructive criticism is great and all, but i know that when i start posting clips up here (which will be some ways off, as i totally suck) and someone else has issues with my work because of stylistic flaws, playing inconsistencies, or downright bad mixing and recording (this is not specifically reference to you nasty) i want them to trash me to hell; it's inspiration, you see, to overcome adversity and become a better player. May not work for everyone, so again, my apologies.

hey no worries. as i said, the crazy feedback was caused by my OD pedal dying, and i was out of more batteries. if you could check my new clips that i posted, i'd appreciate it.
