Title: Another tubes question...
Post by: MartinS on November 05, 2007, 11:08:38 AM
My Electro-Harmonix Tube Zipper's powered by two EH12AX7 tubes. These are available on eBay, but there are also Mesa 12AX7 tubes, which are considerably more expensive. Would there be a difference in sound? If so, any idea what the difference would be?

Cheers.

There will be a difference in sound. I don't know if it will be better or not. EH tubes are relabeled Ruby tubes. Fender/Groove Tubes are relabeled Sovteks etc. Mesa tubes are probably relabeled ones too but I wouldn't know from wich factory.

Mesa tubes are, in my experience, loud solid and bright.  They take high gain really well, as you'd expect.  If you're after a lower gain crunch/overdrive I'd go for JJs instead.
