Title: Classic tracks with a Les Paul
Post by: Oli on November 10, 2007, 12:00:22 PM
So, now that i've got my Les Paul, i'd like to learn some classic tracks that just scream 'les paul'. The problem is, due to my metalheadedness (i'm pretty sure that's in the dictionary), my knowledge of classic rock tracks is, well, abysmal. So if i could have some suggestions of good tracks to learn, that'd be great.

Cheers guys :)

Oli

shite; forgot about them...
Thin lizzy really got into Dean guitars for a good while though.
Yngwie Malmesteen is apparently a bit of a closet LP enthusiast (used mainly for studio rhythm tracks.
I've seen Steve Hackett playing with a LP with a FR... nasty
Zakk Wylde (even if he does use EMGs he is still more of a LP-style player than your traditional thrasher)
Carlos Santana (owned an SG back when they were called LPs so that counts and anyway PRSs are all based on the LP anyway)

The Gary Moore music i enjoy the most is not the songs he recorded with a Les Paul.

Thanks for posting this, as Whilst attempting to disprove it, I found this intriguing net nugget (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.freewebs.com/busted_tribute_band/Bustid-Blue%2520back%2520qtr.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.freewebs.com/busted_tribute_band/moreinfo.htm&h=233&w=320&sz=23&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=u_5eJcsFqaeGeM:&tbnh=86&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbustid%26gbv%3D2%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG)

Incredibly, they had a gig as recently as August and have another in december.
there truly is hope for us all.

I can't think of many more, but going back to the top of the thread, Oli mentioned specific tracks as well as artists.  It's not always easy to pick individual tracks, so I've cheated and included albums:

Gary Moore - Parisienne Walkways
Thin Lizzy - Still In Love With You & Don't Believe A Word
Free - All Right Now, Fire And Water, The Hunter
The Allman Brothers Band - the At Fillmore East album
Bluesbreakers with Eric Clapton - the Beano album
Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well, all the Peter Green stuff really
Jeff Beck - the Truth and Blow By Blow albums
Whitesnake - all the early albums
Govt Mule - everything!
ZZ Top - early stuff - Tush, La Grange, Beer Drinkers & Hell Raisers
Y&T - Forever
Guns n' Roses - Appetite For Destruction, obviously!  :)

And I just thought of a hugely underrated Les Paul man - Peter Frampton!  Check out Humble Pie's Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore and Frampton Comes Alive!

Kiss' Ace Frehley was a LP lover
I think I saw some Panic Cell videos with LPs or at least SGs
my well is running dry (not a common occurrence with something that stops water from running in fact it probably a rather cr@ppy sort of well if that happens...)

LPs seem to have gone out of fashion nowadays :? Shame as they are pretty nice looking guitars despite being poorly conceived in terms of upper fret access.

Must argue that, Randy Rhoads was never a big guy, yet his tiny fingers seem to go right up the fretboard.

I agree that its nothing like a superstrat, however I find the necks too long, its easier to find your place on a LP / Gibson type thing with a prominent heel

I'd have to disagree- i find it really comfortable to play high up there (albeit with my sausage like hand appendages!). It feels really 'open' without a larger horn there, and i love the big feel of the heel. Granted it's a little more challenging doing faster shredish kinda stuff, but the LP has done something which i hadn't had for a while- made me smile and enjoy playing the guitar. For the past few months, i'd kinda just been going through the motions, playing the same old stuff, but now a hole new side to my playing has been uncovered.... a side filled with big tone and music with groove!

Cheers for all the suggestions guys, i'll check a selection of them out :)

Les Paul changed his signature model to the SG shape in 61-62, then he changed it back to his origunal LP model, the SG continued to be produced but then it was just called SG and not Les Paul. In books about Gibson the SG is still referred to as Les Paul/SG.

So a SG is a Les Paul originally. Still i would OK BS more from a sound perspective then from a guitar perspective.

Focus but also Cuby used LP's in the early days, later some different models came into play.

Les Paul didn't change the spec, gibson did.
They may have similar names at times, but the sound and feel is completely different.
I guess it would be good for BS stuff, but its not going to have that same... well SG-ness
