Ok, so e-mailed Tim and he recommended The Mules for my Epi Les Paul Ultra due to the fact I'll get that classic rock sound and the chambering in the guitar won't muddy the lower end output of the pickups. Sounds great to me and that's the ones I want to go for.
I was just searching through the gallery however, trying to get a feel for how the different colours and styles look, and down at the bottom there is a "Les paul loaded with aged un-potted Mules! Must be heard to be believed!"
I was wondering what these un-potted ones sound like, what difference there is to the potted ones. Is it even an option when buying? If Tim is saying these are great then I'm assuming they're pretty good.
Just to let you guys know, I am looking for a vintage sound, rock 'n'roll type guns 'n' roses thing.
Anyway, thanks for any help you guys can give,
Andrew

G'n'R would be quite high gain for a totally unpotted pup.
However Tim can half-pot it for you to give you the sound but without microphony.
Anyway anything you see or can imagine may be requested in the ordering of the pup (on the website there is a form to ask for modifications to be made to the pup in question.).

Cool, thanks for the reply. I think I'll e-mail Tim about the half-potting and see what he thinks. I hadn't even considered that.

just regurgitating Tim's wisdom oooooooohhhhmmmmm <holds cross legged position and moves closer to enlightenment in the ways of the Tim> :note:

Just thought I'd update, might be helpful to some people. I asked Tim about the half potting and he said this was not possible. Some manufacturers say they can do this but it is not true. Here is a full transcript:
Hi Andrew
Unpotteds are more lively, basically they're on the verge of feedback
when pushed hard.No thing as half potted I'm afraid. A coil is either
potted or it's not, you can't half pot one, some makers claim to do this
but it's impossible. To make sure unpotted coils don't squeal with
microphony I put a tiny amount of wax into the cover before pressing it
on, this gives you all the response of an unpotted coil but removes the
microphony you experience from air trapped under the cover.
Potted and unpotted will both work well in your Ultra-it all depends how
much high end response you would like.
kind regards
Tim
I'm still debating, but I guess it's just personal preference.

That's what I meant. I was just remembering that I read that somewhere and I may not have got it completely right.
