Title: hard rock / metal ballads
Post by: gwEm on November 16, 2007, 12:11:13 PM
feeling in a reflective mood.

can anyone suggest a favourite rock ballad? obviously theres many, but which one really brings a metaphoric tear to the eye, and some passionate playing?

only tunes from real rock or metal bands - nothing typically emo/indy ;)

theres absolutely hundreds of good ones of course... i find it hard to pick just one myself..

i think i'll go with 'angel' by judas priest

(but i do have big a soft spot for 'wind of change')

I think Cemetary Gates is a ballad for sure, it's a metal ballad but it sure moves me!

Would it be too lame and cheesey to say Every Rose Has It's Thorn? Screw it, I'll say it anyway!

"I'm Easy" by Faith No More. It doesn't bring a tear to the eye and it's a cover version but man, it's funny.

And then there's "Estranged" by Guns n' Roses wich, sometimes, can bring a tear to my eye.

For me, there's one that's WAAAAAY above all others:

Still In Love With You - Thin Lizzy

The version from the Live and Dangerous album.  If you've never heard it, get a listen.  THE most superb playing, tone and feel.  Awe inspiring.

let's see,

Forever Free, W.A.S.P.

Rock Me, Great White

She Only, Great White

In A Darkened Room, Skid Row

She's An Angel, Love/Hate

Bringin' On The Heartbreak, Def Leppard

Ballad Of Dwight Fry, Alice Cooper

Underwater World, Hanoi Rocks

Think that'll do for now.  hmmm, mostly eighties there.  has the rock ballad become extinct?

i suppose that metal and hard rock as we knew it in the 70s and 80s, or even the 90s has dissappeared.

i'm sure some of the songs emo and indy bands are kranking out could be considered rock ballads - but they are not in this same kind of tradition. cheesy as they are, most of the songs mentioned on this thread manage to sound optimistic and powerful and might drive people to get over some sort of heartbreak or sad event. some very potent material indeed, very musical and well arranged. i've had that white lion tune on repeat for 5 or 6 times :)

some things are so terrible they're awful, some things are so terrible they're good! it's personal judgement.

i think a lot of us here were into the eighties/ early nineties rock bands when every album had at least one overblown ballad.  some of them, like the album version of November Rain (the old acoustic demo is much better) are so overblown they're just cr@p!  and if, say the Spice Girls had done Every Rose Has It's Thorn we'd have hated it! but this was the music of our youth, and that makes it exempt from any taste or judgement we've developed since!  :)

I'd like to add:
WHITESNAKE
-Here I Go Again
-The Deeper the Love
-Is This Love?
-Crying in the Rain
-Now You're Gone
-Sailing Ships (one of my favourite songs ever)

Deep Purple - Soldier of Fortune

Mr Big - Just Take My Heart, Nothing But Love

Alice Cooper - Might Aswell Be on Mars, Only My Heart Talkin' (this man really is underrated as a songwriter)

Firehouse - Love of a Lifetime

Dream Theater - Another Day

err.... I doubt not many of you have heard it but

Bathory - Ring Of Gold

then
Rainbow - Rainbow Eyes
Place Of Skulls - The Black Is Never Far
Savatage - Sleep
Pain Of Salvation - Undertow
Opeth - To Bid You Farewell
Nightingale - Alonely and To My Inspiration
Blind Guardian - Harvest Of Sorrow

and as far as that 80's stuff is concerned
Cinderella - Don't Know What You Got (Till it's gone) is untouchable imo

:D The problem with ballards is they just became so predictable particuly in the mid 80`s. Every Metal band had to release a ballard it was just so boring & cheese making ! This is when you get "Every Rose Has its Thorn" & every other cheese making song you can think of. Aerosmith are by far the worst offenders.

More Than Words - Extreme simply the best ballard written in the last 20 yrs. A truely great song.

try & get " The Last Rose Of Summer" by Judas Priest off of the Sin After Sin Album. again Leppards "Bringin` On The Heartbreak" is a great tune as well.

Or Whitesnakes "`Aint Gonna Cry No More " or even `Aint No Love In The Heart Of The City"

+1 to both of those for certain, and lots of other things already mentioned.

White Lion - When The Children Cry (although I haven't heard it for the best part of 20 years, so sorry if it's a cheesefest   )

King's X - Goldilox

UFO - Love To Love

Scorpions - We'll Burn The Sky, In Trance, Born To Touch Your Feelings, Always Somewhere... actually there are far too many awesome Scorpions ballads to list, they're the kings!

and...

Pride And Glory - Fadin' Away (that actually does choke me up every time I listen to it, for some reason   .  Proves that Zakk isn't just a beery hellraiser, too)

Ah, but Winger have Reb Beach and Bon Jovi have Richie Sambora, a man who wears very silly hats and has stars on his fretboards.  Winger have the fantastic Rod Morgenstein and BJ have a pet gorilla called Tico.  Both bands have fairly embarrassing singers, I must admit, but it's not Kip's fault he looks like the fifth Gibb brother.

Hmm.  These aren't very convincing arguments, are they?  :? .

TBH, I did quite like the first three Bon Jovi albums (side two of Slippery.. is awful, though).  I went off them for good when Jon Bon decided he was either Bruce Springsteen or Southside Johnny (but with poofy hair) and kept wittering on about Noo Joisey (naming an album after it was really crass).

Oh FFS - stop knocking 80s bands because you think others might frown on you liking them
Absolutely nothing wrong with all the bands like Cinderella, Poison etc
It's not "ironic" or embarrassing to love their songs - they are just good songs and liking them is totally understandable

Heres a few good 80s examples

still loving you - scorpions
I still love you - Kiss
more than words - extreme
I remember you skid row
is this love Whitesnake
house of broken love - great white
save your love  great white
angel song - great white
soldier of fortune - deep purple
changes - black sabbath
stranger to love - black sabbath
dont know what you've got - cinderella
to be with you - Mr Big
until i get you - hanoi rocks
wanted dead or alive - bon Jovi
seasons - badlands
bringing on the heartbreak - Def Leppard

Oh FFS - stop knocking 80s bands because you think others might frown on you liking them
Absolutely nothing wrong with all the bands like Cinderella, Poison etc
It's not "ironic" or embarrassing to love their songs - they are just good songs and liking them is totally understandable

 PDT_003

Exactly.

Many of the songs could be reorchestrated into many different forms or performed solo and they would STILL stand up as GREAT SONGS.

Let's see how timeless $%&#ing djenting is in 10 years.

Whitesnake - Too Many Tears.

But....

I much prefer the David Coverdale Solo Album version... a bit more introspective. It gives me chills.

Woman in Love, Barbera Streisand, ok it's not really rock but she rips at the end of the song. I generally hate ballads. 8)

Here's some, I have to say I like the 80s a lot, just simple fun and rockin songs, having a good time, which is what it is all about in my opinion, anyway, some ballad/slower songs I'll throw in.

Def Leppard
-When Love And Hate Collide
-Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad
-Where Does Love Go When It Dies
Winger - Miles Away
Ratt - One Step Away
Kix - Tear Down The Walls
Britny Fox - Dream On
Aerosmith - Don't Wanna Miss A Thing

Thunder - love walked in (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DV6q6wzw0iA)
Rainbow - love's no friend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5tEHEdODCs)
Metallica - nothing else matters (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tj75Arhq5ho)
Kiss - I still love you (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMsIwKiMqSE)
Dokken - jaded heart (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tC_Lo0SvUpg)
Def Leppard - too late for love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHA1Cv9XsBk)

Oh and FWIW, the '80s were f**king awesome. Some great bands around at that time.

Edit: Ok so most of mine have been mentioned... Still, worth linking again.

I was going to say at last, a bloke my age who's in worse shape than me!  :)

But I checked and he's actually a few years older - so I could be looking at my future....

(.....minus the beach, the money and Denise Richards  :( )

Off topic, but how things have changed in the last 4 years.... my future was to get skinny, not fatter.  :|

Anyway, I like some of Muttley's choices above.  :)

Anyone said "I would do anything for love (but I won´t do that)" by Meatloaf yet? Caus that is so very very uber to me....

Sides that (and forgive me for straying a bit from hard rock and metal at times):
Avantasia - Farewell (so very goddamn cheesy...it´s kinda great)
Avantasia - The story ain´t over
Avantasia - Runaway train (this one is just so very powerful and overproduced. Amazing singers too. It is so very close to being a parody though....as Avantasia often is, but I love it)
Bruce Spingsteen - Thunderroad (the ´75 Hammersmith Odeon version is $%&#ing fantastic)
Guns n´ Roses - November Rain
In Flames - Chosen Pessimist (not exactly a typical ballad, but hell, it gets me, especially live)
Jimmy Eat World - Invented (not hard rock or metal, but great ballad, especially the break)
Mr. Big - All the way up (the other Mr. Big songs have already been named)
Metallica - Hero of the Day (the S&M version...went with me through some dark times)
Muse - Starlight
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt (when you talk about tearjerkers)
Sonata Arctica - Gravenimage
Stone Sour - Hesitate (bloody heck, this gets me)
Stone Sour - Zzyzx Rd.
Stone Sour - Bother (Cory Tailor even had to stop playing cause his voice started cracking up. He was crying when he played it live...the crowd singing was incredible, insanely touching moment)
Smashing Pumpkins - Disarm
Van Canto - Spelled in Water
Title: Re: hard rock / metal ballads

Rainbow - Catch the Rainbow
Deep Purple - Mistreated, Child in Time
Bon Jovi - Never Say Goodbye
Badlands - Fire and Rain (yes, I know it's a James Taylor cover but what interpretation)
Gary Moore - Empty Rooms
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Simple Man

Most of the others that came to mind were already quoted - great selection BTW.

Cheers Stephan

I don't know if this song applies to this group as it has no singing in, but I do think it's a ballad.

Gary Moore - The Loner

Pearl Jam - Black.
Maybe the greatest rock ballad of the last 20 years. Its soaring, emotive, doesn't resort to any cliche and has lyrics in it which anybody who has ever loved and lost will relate too. It hasn't dated in 20 years either.

Savatage, Alone You Breathe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4_WVFWaLsQ). Jon's lament for his brother, Criss.

Savatage, Believe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EGn8_g_fG1g). Song about perdition and redemption.

Skid Row, I Remeber You (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivFYVAntpw0). One of my favourite 'power ballads'

Evergrey Trilogy Of The Damned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ya3A1Ci4r4). Not for the easily depressed; lots of Catholic guilt!!

Testament, The Ballad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i4BNTTejNL0).

Death Angel, Seemingly Endless Time (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEJwW32TeOg&feature=related). Tied with Testament for best thrash band ever, but they have some great downtempo material, too!!

Rush, Tears (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdtYyuLtjbw).

Gotta be honest, and no offence meant, but I never liked 'em.  They've got too much of that Rod Stewart/Faces/Stones sound for me.

Rock'n'Roll with too much Roll and not enough Rock, I think.
