I use Guitar Rig 3, too. It was amazing in version 2, and now it's even better. More streamlined and I believe it doesn't kill my processor as much.

Anyway, I have it loaded in to a laptop so that when me and the band gig live, I make the bass player run a direct patch from GR3 output in to the mixing board. That way we have any number of perfectly mic'ed bass amps/cabs on tap, and distortions too.

Go go go!

I've acquired it and used it in the past, I didn't use a DI box with it though so I didn't think that much to it, for hi gain metal at least (at the time I was like, I'll use this instead of buying a cr@ppy Marshall MG)

then I found a demo of it in a shop with a cheap strat, and it still didn't sound that good, again hi gain metal settings

how much difference does a DI box and a proper guitar make to the sound? I was gunna buy a DI box and well... I never got round to it doh

I'm currently toying with these things and so far I prefer Amplitube 2 to guitar rig 3 so far but Ive barely touched the surface. One good resource I've found is this site:

http://www.guitarampmodeling.com/index.php

You will need to register and login to download the presets.

That sound MUCH better than the clips on the GuitarRig website - really impressed, may well look into buying that (unless someone knows of a hooky version flying around for me to 'evaluate')

how long can I evaluate that version for and do I need some special interface to plug into the PC? (or will a DI Box into my soundcard work fine?)

I was about to comment saying that i agree about the revalver kicking ass,but then it did exactly what amplitube and guitar rig do to me.

The Digital Headache.

It sounds good, sure, but for reasons unknown to myself it gives me a headache really quickly.

I originally thought that this was due to the delay between playing a note and hearing it through the amp sim, but i guess not.

But playing in front of a 4x12 for an hour in a little bar doesn't give you a headache?   8)

That's weird!  :o

I haven't tried revalver yet but I'm going to try the demo. I use a Line6 POD XTL and I've also got Guitar Rig 2. Guitar rig by itself seems too thin whereas the Line6 can sound too dark.  For recording I prefer to get a sound I like with the POD, record the track with the amp sound only (no cabs, mics or effects) and then use Guitar Rig cab and mic simulation as a plug in. This sounds much more alive than all Line6, and has more substance than Guitar Rig alone.

Yeah, Revalver 2 is probably the best high-gain modeler these days, however, the cleans aren't very elaborate IMO. :?

Well that would give me a headache after half an hour, sure.

But these things give me one after just 2 min's.

Wish I knew why...

Everyone say's it's incredible but nobody seems to use it to record anything that people will pay money for. They have some endorsing artists that are quite big names, but I'm not sure what they do with it.

On Fear Factory's Transgression album NI are credited and I think that Christian Olde Wolbers used it for some aspect of that recording but it would be nice to know exactly what he did with it.

I think that PC/MAC based amp modelling and embedded system amp modelling hardware can make sounds that are easily good enough to put on a CD but most name guitarists aren't adventurous enough to try it.

The thought of poking around with a laptop in a small gig environment isn't very attractive. I think that for recording though if the rest of your gear is up to standard and you are recording at 192KHz/24bit then it is definitely a serious recording setup and after mastering to the lower audio quality of a commerical CD people won't know if it's been miked or modelled.

it's used on transgression for cleans, the lead guitarist in norther has used it for posting clips on their forum, and Trent Razor uses it for something

I've acquired 3 now, it deffo sounds better than 2, not sure if the amps sounding better or if it's the matched cabs thing as I find it a lot easier to tweak than the old cab system
