this sucks :/ next summer's going to be a pretty poor show. grumble grumble.
good mclaren's out at least - hopefully we'll get the strong and high profile manager we need.
-
Good riddence to Mclaren.
Martin O'Neil and Jose Mourinho bookies favourite to replace!
I have to say Jose would be $%ing awesome imo, and that's coming from a Man UTD supporter!
Though former Real Madrid manager is interested too. (he got sacked by Real Madrid even though he won the Spanish league with them!)
-

Capello was sacked by Real for his boring defensive style of play, apparently.
That's the last thing England need, they do "boring and defensive" already - albeit very badly on the "defensive" part.
-
Yeah i know what he got sacked for but surely if your winning major titles then there is no reason to sack him surely?!
-
Talk about a scapegoat! I really feel for Mclaren when its clearly the team who are shite. It's plain to see England will be bad at football because the players don't care about international games anymore. Everyones too obsessed with club level where 80% of the players are foreign. Maybe if we limited the ammount of foreign players in our leagues clubs would be forced to invest money into training kids so we have a wealth of good players to pick from.
To me being an englishman international football is the most important as its about the country and everyone can appreciate that. What we don't need is a foreign manager he has to be english!

:D Stop living in cloud coockoo land !!!!!!!
Jose` Mourinho is not going to manage England in a million years ! He`s allready turned it down last week live on Sky ! You wont get Arsene Wenger or Alex Ferguson either infact no one of any proven talent will go anywhere near the poison Chalice that is the England managers job !
I bet we end up with either a yesterdays man who`s seen better days or a manager with no experience being teamed up with another manager with little to no experience. ie Capello or Alan Shearer with Stuart Pearce. As for Sam Alladyce do you really wont England to play like Bolton ! [ he`s allready ruled himself out of the running today ] & as for Martin O`Neil do me a favour he turned Leicester into bore draw specialists & managed 1 of only 2 teams in Scotland hardly a strong recommendation. Even i could manage Celtic or Rangers hell even you lot could run Celtic or Rangers !!!
The sad truth is we just dont play great football in this country its not part of our make up. I watched with great sadness my mates young son playing football with his boys team. All about 10years old playing on full size pitch with full size goals. The only way they could get the ball up to the front players was to hump it right up the field. it was very depressing to watch. We dont make great players in this country we dont turn out great players, we delude ourselves that our players are world class when as last night against Croatia proved that we dont have any. Its also true i care far more about my team [ Arsenal ] than i have ever cared about England. As for Steve Maclaren impossible job really he wasn`t 1st choice to start with His got ordinary players to pick from most of whom under perform for England regulary, Lampard, Gerrad, J.Cole all cr@p last night again & when have they ever looked great in the last 5 years ? Why wasn`t Theo Waldcott or David Bentley on the bench last night instead we had Jermaine DeFoe & Darren Bent & you want to no why i laughed my head last night ! Its the FA we need to replace not Steve maclaren.
:D 8)
Sorry For The RANT !!!!!
-
what pissed me off was how he didn't resign, he waited to get sacked so he would get a ridiculous payoff (£2.5 million)!
-
I'm supporting my beloved Spain and Holland next summer instead. $% England. :)
-
In fairness regarding the pay-off - don't blame McClaren, blame the stupid gits at the FA who negotiated his contract. If someone said to you "You can resign and we'll give you nowt or we can fire you and you get £2.5 million" which one would you go for? Barwick and his mob should be getting a lot more flak than they are.

As much as I hate Gordon Brown ( ), I have to admit that I like his idea of bringing back the Home Nations tournament next year seeing as none of us have actually qualified for Euro2008.
Before anyone has a go at me for being Welsh can I just say that I was supporting England on Wednesday night. Where I was brought up in North Wales the closest First Division teams were either in Birmingham or Liverpool. I ended up supporting Liverpool as a kid and have stuck with them ever since through thick (Istanbul) and thin (the Souness years), so I wanted to see England do OK.
However if we go get a Home Nations Tournament up and running next year I can safely say that Wales will probably finish bottom, but I reckon the team to beat will be the Scots.....
Damn it if those boys haven't played their qualification with pride and passion, something sadly lacking from the overpaid nancy boys of England. I mean "COME OFF IT!!!!" no fairy chavball player is really worth paying £120,000 A WEEK  . "Oh they need it because their career is so short" we hear the sympathsisers say....THEY EARN MORE IN ONE YEAR THAN A HIGH POWERED LONDON EXEC WILL EARN IN A LIFETIME!! The only reason they earn that sort of money is because football is tainted from the ground up.
Take Spain last year......
Operation Pueto......the big blood doping scandal.....the reason why most of the big names in the 2006 Tour De France were banned from riding. Off go the European press about how dirty cycling is. Dr Fuentes (the doc at the heart of this blood doping scandal) then came out and said that his book with the code names of his patients in it didn't just have cyclists. Top tier tennis player and olympic class athletes were also on his books, but his Hippocratic oath prevented him from saying who they really were. The Tennis and Athletics federations then went after the dopers like the cycling federation was doing. However Fuentes actually came out and said that there were whole Primiera Liga teams also on his books......what did Fifa and Uefa do about it????
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!
They swept the whole thing under the carpet and we've heard nothing about it since.
Football is full of overpaid nancy boys who care nothing about their National teams or about the sheer pride of pulling on the jersey, they're only obcessed about who's paying for the next Bentley or Range Rover Sport. I think Premiership players should be banned from playing for England..........just let the lads in the Championship play......then you'll see some passion for playing for your national team, and maybe the Premiership top earners might see that theres more to the beautiful game than their stupid pay packets.
If you want to watch a real sport though try rugby!
No daft money (yet.....hopefully it'll stay that way), sensible use of modern technology (video ref, and post match citations for things the ref missed), sin bins for foul play, only the Captain can talk to the ref, no foul language, and if a player goes down injured you know they're injured!!! Plus I would be happy to take any kids to a rugby match and not have to explain the swearing from all around me like I would if I went to a football match.
Where's the soapbox emoticon when you need one
-
no, i actually think its the managers job to pick the side, motivate the players and get them to work as a team.
obviously that didn't work out, so McLaren had to go.
i dont deny the FA needs to take a long hard look at themselves also
-
What's nine inches long and hangs in front of a c--k?.................
.............. Steve McClarens tie
-
Hahahahaha! Well I'm pretty much satisfied with the score :D BWAHAHAHAHA :D
Cheers guys :) :drink:

Q: What's the difference between The FA and Lewis Hamilton?
A: Hamilton still has his McLaren today.
Anyway. This is the best (potential) England squad we've had since 1990 (when we know we should've run out winners) and we need a competent, confident manager to get the best out of these players. That guy was never gonna be McLaren - he's an assistant coach, at best. He's no manager or head coach, he's just a quiffed buffoon with no tactical knowledge, no motivational abilities and the personality of a lettuce and dogshite sandwich.
Good riddance and bring Fabio Capello on. One of the greatest managers of all-time says he's interested in the job - YOU GO AND SIGN HIM!!!
-
Talk about a scapegoat! I really feel for Mclaren when its clearly the team who are shitee.
+1
you have two decent players- beckham (who's getting old) and rooney (who's injured a lot).
Capello was sacked by Real for his boring defensive style of play, apparently.
That's the last thing England need, they do "boring and defensive" already - albeit very badly on the "defensive" part.
on the plus side you're pretty good at the "boring" thing...

lmao, that's funny. I think your forgetting some there!
Come on seriously - Lampard, Gerrard, Hargreaves, Carrick, Ferdinand, Terry, G Neville, M Richards, Ashley Cole. They are all world class players, they don't show it for England, but in the Premiership they are immense. That's why it is obviously the managers fault.

Don't include me in that "you're" - I'm Welsh! Not that that's anything to be proud of, football wise...

Philly Q - hey, we drew with the Germans this week! Not a bad result against if you compare with the Wembley fiasco........
Mike
A fellow Taff
-
Philly Q - hey, we drew with the Germans this week! Not a bad result against if you compare with the Wembley fiasco.......
True, Mike - if you're only as good as your last result then we're better than England right now!
But it's only 6 weeks since that loss to Cyprus... :(
-
Shhhh! And for God's sake don't mention the 'r*gby' word!!
-
:D Its amazing to find that the vast majority of people that called for McLarens head are the same fantasists that insit that Jose Mourinho will be manager & that England have world class players......all of course provably is a load of B*ll*cks !
:D 8)
-
As a Scottish person I was hoping England would get through. No seriously. Still, both England and Scotland are in the second pot for the World Cup, should be interesting. We might qualify!
-

lampard's shitee. ditto terry. most of the others aren't exactly world class either. gerrard and ferdinand are alright, but not amazing.
no offence, if you had that many world class players, you'd be winning the euro championships, not struggling to qualify.
EDIT: "They are all world class players, they don't show it for England, but in the Premiership they are immense. "
 wow.
Maybe that's because the premiership isn't half as good a league as the hype would suggest.
that's like saying "i kicked ass at gcse, how come i'm not top of the class at oxford?".
maybe the premiership's a "world class" league in the same way england have "world class" players...
Don't include me in that "you're" - I'm Welsh! Not that that's anything to be proud of, football wise...
apologies, phil.

No offence taken, Dave :) . Actually, strictly speaking, I'm half Welsh, quarter English and quarter Norn Irish, so if any selectors are reading...
-
Hey guys youre forgetting something, our football isn't world class but our hooligans definately are!!
On a bonus side to things our hooligans will have no reason to go and start fights abroad lowering other countires opinion of us further, I already feel we have become the laughing point of europe :(
-
I'm pretty damn happy with the results
-
No offence taken, Dave :) . Actually, strictly speaking, I'm half Welsh, quarter English and quarter Norn Irish, so if any selectors are reading...
ah, you'd be straight into the northern ireland team!
-
lol premiership is a shite league, ok then...
-
You all forget something.
Footballers are terrible at football.
And the tactics make little difference due to the simplicity of Football.
Most games are trial and error, if you're doing cr@p in the first half, change your lineup to see if it improves.
-
Some people are really really silly and way too easily riled up over football.
*No names mentioned whatsoever* :)
-
Sorry, I must argue. Footballers DO have talent
those 'injury' scenes are amazing, they do it in one take without a stunt double!
atleast its better than the chavvy type that just cannot accept that its a game
-
lol premiership is a shitee league, ok then...
now we're on the same page.
if you're trying to suggest that premiership football is of similar quality to international, then you're mistaken. it's a major jump in talent.
spanish and italian leagues are both "better" than the premiership, at least in terms of skill etc., if you ask me- and the vast majority of the most skilful players in the premiership aren't even english.
EDIT: i don't even care less about football, by the way- it's not football which riles me, it's english supporters who don't seem to realise that the fact that they frequently and consistently lurch from one mediocre result to another probably isn't the result of a cr@p manager, but the result of a cr@p team.
Then when you occasionally qualify by the skin of your teeth, you're suddenly talking about how you have a decent shot of winning the thing. Yes, obviously you struggled to qualify, but now you have you have as good a chance as the teams which coasted into the finals. ok.
are you guys watching the same england I am?
EDIT: i realise northern ireland are not an amazing team. but we don't talk about how we're going to win major competitions all the time.
-
We fail so hard

If the Premiership is so cr@p in comparison then why were there 3 Premiership teams out of the 4 teams in the Champions League semi final last season?
-
Cant we all just agree that in general football is cr@p and pointless? :P
-

Dave I've got to agree that England aren't as good as us English think they are. Definitely.
But imo the Premiership is up there as one of the best leagues in the world.
-
Cant we all just agree that in general football is cr@p and pointless? :P
(smiley noted)
i suppose some might say playng rock guitar is cr@p and pointless... ;) or playing computer games or whatever...
but for many people theres nothing like watching england play in a crowded pub. next summers going to be that bit less good now for many people.
we definately have talented players, good enough to win the european championship (look at greece last time round for example), they seem to be lacking in motivation and strategy though
-
I am not at all interested in or know much about football but surely this has to have a silver lining. They have to reasses how they do things as these highly paid guys have made a complete cods of the whole thing-they are all responsible-the FA, Coach and the players but more inportantly the guy who cuts the grass at Wembley( and the burger sellers must share the blame to imho)-where we we? oh football thats right. Whatever they are doing, it ain't working so look at how other successful countries do it and copy them-there you go-simple-thread over. :)
-
...Or you know you could do what Scotland's done. Get a good manager the team likes, alongside a young team with potential and play the best you fricken can.
Boosted us up the rankings a bit...
-
:D As a dedicated football fan i have to say i agree to some of whats been said. The truth is the Premiership is not technically the best leauge in Europe but its is the most exciting, this is often confused with being the best. The truth is also that our players are i`m afraid inferrior to there European opposition. Here`s a question for `ya Is it not possible that the reason that Arsenal & Man Utd win everything is because they dont play English football but actually both play a European game which is why they qualify in Europe & get regulay into the quater final stages of the European cup ? This means that when they sign players those players get better as a result just look at Arsenal this season, nobody outside of us supporters gave them a hope this season but look where there at in the league & Man Utd are right behind them. Look at Wayne Rooney score regulary at Man Utd but put him in a England shirt playing a traditional hump and run game & he scores very rarely.
:D 8)
-
I think instead of moaning about "foreign" players coming over here and "stopping" young English/British players coming through, a few English players (S Gerrard for example) should try playing in Spain or Italy and see what it teaches them.
There's nothing stopping them - apart from being too thick to learn the language of course.
-
If the Premiership is so cr@p in comparison then why were there 3 Premiership teams out of the 4 teams in the Champions League semi final last season?
that's a moot point- i'm not suggesting the likes of arsenal, man U and chelsea aren't good teams. the top 3 or 4 english teams are pretty good, and could stand up against almost any other team in the world (though it should be noted they have a lot of non-english players ;) )- it's the guys 10th or 15th I'm talking about.
also if the premiership is so good, why almost every time an english player goes to play abroad, are they almost immediately relegated to the bench? and these are the cream of the english players going, not the also-rans from teams near the relegation zone.
:D As a dedicated football fan i have to say i agree to some of whats been said. +1, generally, though I disagree the premiership is the most exciting- spanish football is pretty good too. :)

+1- the reason english players now try to play anything other than route 1 is the influx of more skilful and sophisticated foreign players who have influenced their playing style. If anything, foreign players in the english league have improved england's team, not made it worse.
-
Okay I don't want to get too involved in this, but Dave come on... you're being a bit inconsistent with what you're saying...
the top 3 or 4 english teams are pretty good, and could stand up against almost any other team in the world
If they could stand up to almost any other team in the world, that makes them significantly better than "pretty good" in my books...
-
not really- the top 3 or 4 teams don't mean the rest of the league is any good- plus when you consider the fact that most of the england players are in one of the top 3 or 4 teams... which means they only have to play against quality opposition 4 or 5 times a season... which i still maintain isn't of as high quality as, say, playing against a quality international team.
gah, i don't care. don't qualify for the next world cup and blame the manager again. it couldn't be the players, as they kick ass in the premiership.
EDIT: i sound like i'm getting worked up about this- i'm really not. it's just annoying how you can't see it... every qualifying term you struggle to qualify, and every time you blame the manager, yet don't change any tactics at all.
-
Hah I see what you're saying completely...
but I was referring 100% to that one statement only;
"the top 3 or 4 english teams are pretty good, and could stand up against almost any other team in the world"
Those Premiership teams are better than "pretty good" if they can compete with the very best in the world.... see what I mean?
Just a minor point.
Anyway no worries... I know you're not riled up about it, nor am I. I know exactly what you mean how we basically rate ourselves too high. On the other hand, I think you're rating us a bit TOO low.
-
yeah, chelsea, arsenal, man u and probably liverpool too are good teams, no doubt (EDIT: by "any other team", i meant other club teams. :))
just the best english players are only having to play against that quality of opposition 4 or 5 times a season (in the premiership)... granted they have to play in europe too.
Eh, I dunno... you should be qualifying. but you aren't... something's wrong.
:)
-
Ha yeah your right.
And yup we should be qualifying.
We're not as good as we think we are, but our players are definitely good enough to be doing better than they are... that's for sure.
-
yeah, i'd agree to that. you probably aren't going to win the thing, but you should probably be hitting the quarter finals. not struggling to qualify...
:)
-
you probably aren't going to win the thing, but you should probably be hitting the quarter finals.
...then going out meekly on penalties.
(Which is, of course, "a lottery"... but England seem to have a knack for always picking the wrong numbers.)
-
^Too true.
-
:D I hope the new manager starts to bring in the younger talent. I thought MacLaren made a huge mistake not having Theo Waldcott or David Bentley on the bench, both have great skill & Waldcott has great pace to. I think its fair to say there both far better players than Defoe, or Bent are. If we were to list the problems in English football this thread would last for the next 6 months !
Youth football needs to be revamped. We need to stop blaming foreign players & start competing with them. We need to start training up the next generation of managers. It seems incredible to me that right now we have Arsene Wenger & Alex Ferguson current managers both with unbelievable amounts of knowledge & yet theres no trainy managers being trained by them. If these were guitar players we would have god nos how many DVD`s & instructional magazine articles, and loads of us fellow guitarists would be learning how off of them. Says it all really doesn`t it.
