Hi, which BKP is the closest to a set of DiMarzio´s Breed?
Planning of replace my Evolutions in my Ibanez Jem555. (sounds good but little bit to cold/hard)
-
Probably a holy diver or nailbomb, but dont expect them to sound that much alike.
Either BK will wipe the floor with it :D
-
If you're looking for a smooth, warm alnico sound with some PAF tonality but more output, the Crawler might also be a good choice. It's not as hot and modern as the Holy Diver, though.

I got a set of Crawlers in my LesPaul which sound exellent! But "I think" I want something similar but a little bit different this time, In my Jem555 the Evolutions sound good (much better than in my Ibanes S which sounded like cr@p with Evo´s) but the high notes are to cold and "Ice-picky" I think the Breed was developed to get around this and more like a hotted PafPro.
I was thinking for a long time to get a set of Nailbombs but to be honest I don´t get the "kick" when I lissen to the clips here on the forum (as I did when I heard the Geoff Whitehorn´s Crawler clip). But thats maby because there are mostly METAL-clips instead of melodic metal like satriani-tone that I´m heading for.
I can go the safe way with another set of Crawlers but I think I want a liiiiitle less blues and a liiiitle more agressive/hotter tone

Nailbomb will probably make you a happy man then.

I'd seriously consider Abraxas or VHII for that type of tone.

I owned a Breed-loaded JEM 7DBK for years, even used it for a lot of the guitar tracks on my band's first CD, and am very familiar with that pickup in the context of a basswood guitar, and I'm afraid that those suggestions are really off base if you're looking for something that will cover the Breed's range.
The Breed has something like a Nailbomb's midrange response, but definitely is more in the Miracle Man's line of country with respects to overall output and high frequency response.
If you want something that will drive an amp like the Breed, I would go with the Miracle Man in the bridge.
However, based off my experience with the Breed and with BK pups, I would say that the PAINKILLER set is what you are after, with a Trilogy in the middle position.
That will give you a lot of the push and grind of the Breed, but especially will get the neck tone correct.
Of course, the BK will be more organic, perhaps a bit "tighter" in respect to it's frequency response, and will have a lot more definition.

Ithe high notes are to cold and "Ice-picky" I think the Breed was developed to get around this and more like a hotted PafPro.
While this is the stated purpose of the Breed, it is nothing like a hot PAF!!
I personally think that it's better than the Evolution, but in absolute terms, the pickup is very dry and two dimensional compared to a BK.
As I stated above, popping in a VHII or Abraxis will NOT beat out the Breed when it comes to driving an amp to the same degree. They (the VH2 and Abrax) will both appear to be too bright and weak in comparison.
Painkiller!!

Twilight has spoken. I was wrong.

Not wrong, just mistaken! PDT_008
That phrase DiMarzio uses of the Breed being "PAF-like" is VERY misleading!!!

I've got a Breed in the bridge of a G. Explorer. I like it but want something a touch clearer(I find the Breed slightly muddy with chords, and I'm a rhthym player) and maybe with a tad less power as the Breed definitely isn't lacking in that department(Dimarzio classes it as high output, and I find it plenty hot). How do you think a VHII would do there?

What wood is the Explorer made out of?

All mahogany. I knew I should have mentioned that.

Heh, s'all good.
Hmm, my gut says that the VHII might, indeed work in that guitar. However, there is a lot of mass involved with that guitar. I wonder if something like a Cold Sweat wouldn't be better? That's a stumper!
Personally, I would avoid using an A5 pup in a mahogany body that big.
-
Cold Sweat was the first pickup I got interested in when I found this site and that interest has never waned. In fact, I just ordered one from Musictoyz.com. I play a JCM 800 with the extra preamp tube mod, and overdrive pedals, so gain isn't really an issue.

I've got a Nailbomb in my Explorer and it's fantastic. Tim's other suggestion if I wanted something more vintage was a VHII.

Hmmm... you seem to know the BKP-range :-)
Can you describe the differences between:
Nailbomb
Holydiver
Painkiller
Thanks

I sure can! What would you like to know?

Now I´ve been surfin´ this forum all day and I think I´m getting wiser.
The Painkiller is not an option anymore, I´m not to keen on cheramic.
And what I´ve read is the Nailbomb superb for Ibanez with basswood, right?
I am into Tony McAlpine, John Norum, George Lynch-material.
I´ve seen mr Vai live and it was totaly great, and what a sound! But... when I listen to G3 on youTube I more like Satriani´s tone rather than Vai´s. I think even his tone is a little to ice-picky (=Evolution´s)
I didn´t buy the Jem to be a Vai-copy, I bought it because it was beutiful to look at and play.
A also got a Ibanez 770 which is a great fastrunner as well as the Jem :-) And to be honest the original USA IBZ F2(?) sound really good in that guitar and with any equipment (the Evo´s is more "kinky" with the equipment.) But they are a little bit to muddy and "none-separated". In the neck there is also a F2 which is crazy for sweep-picking and fastruns but a little to much overall and to bassy. Otherwise its a goodpickup (I think Dimarzio made them back in the 80´s)
Sooo.. I think am heading for a set of Nailbombs.
