Title: Gibson pots?!
Post by: AdamB on November 26, 2007, 12:14:11 PM
I just read that someone on here had 300k pots on their SG!?!?!

Took the back plate off my SG and the pots just say gibson on

Can anyone confirm that these are 500k?

Can't tell without testing them  ;)

You may find that the tones are 500k but the volumes are 300k.  That's quite common with Gibson.

Yours is a '61 resissue I think?  My '61 has 500k tones but I haven't tested the volumes with my multimeter as you need to un-solder the pickups........

Yeah it's a 61 reissue, hmmmm..

My warpig sounds ok like, it just shocked me is all.

Would it sound much better with 500K volume pots?

It would sound brighter with more clarity.  Might not be what you want?

True, but i think my new egnater will have plenty of what i'm after in terms of bass.

Might just be worth changing to 500k, if i don't like them then i can change back

Unless anyone can tell me that they are 500k already?!

Also look at  http://www.axesrus.com/axecart.htm for pots and other parts, also  http://www.wdmusicproducts.co.uk/
You might have to take your pots out to see the value. It's sometimes stamped on the side of the casing...sometimes on the fibreboard that holds the 3 solder lugs, facing downwards as you view it in the guitar.

Just got an email back from Gibson, they are 300k volume pots, 500k tone pots.

I'll probably upgrade to a 500k volume pot, although my ceramic warpig sound amazing, i'm sure it will shine more with a 500k pot

If you already have 500k pots wired in as your tone pots, use them as volume controls and leave the tone unwired just to see if you like 500k better.

I usually just buy standard log CTS pots from Allparts but I'm interested in trying those custom-taper RS Superpots.  They're basically made to tighter tollerences so you'll get something within 10% of 500k rather than the 600k or 375k pots I've had in the past.

I'm such a fool!!! I thought they were both 300 kohm. Well I replace the tone pots with 1megohm and it made a difference, mostly on the neck pickup though.

I think I'm going to remove the 300K volume pot within the hour (I should have some other potentios here).

I'm thinking about replacing the volume pots in my sg to 500k as well. Will I need the standard ones or the 3/4" shaft ones?

Just put a 500k pot in, worth the hassle!

That little bit sweeter :)

Standard Tom, the 3/4" are for capped top / Les Paul type guitars. I made the change in my S.G. - and the amount of wood between the top of the pot and where the bottom of the control knob needed to go was relatively slender. Of course it is not as thin as a Strat or Tele control plate, but on those you have to use the locking nut under the plate to lower the pot a bit deeper into the cavity anyway - so the knobs are not sitting high on top.

Cheers FF, I emailed Tim anyway and found out. Changed them a couple of weeks ago and am very happy with the sound of the 500k pots. They do sound alot clearer than the 300k pots, it is definately worth doing.
