Title: Ran custom
Post by: Neemo on December 02, 2007, 08:35:05 PM
As I mentioned a LONG time ago, I ordered a Ran custom V guitar (last year, somewhere in the fall). Anyways, I finally got some pics of the finished guitar and it looks phenomenal, exactly what I ordered. I'm so hyped! I'll send the second and last payment on tuesday. I'll let you know as soon as it arrives.

Enjoy:

ATM it's eguipped with an EMG 81. It's going out very soon. The reason for the active pup was that I'm probably going to install an active booster (the same one as in my ESP, a JE-1000 copy) so there's room for a battery and the stereo jack is already there. I'm balancing between Painkiller and A5 Warpig, both tempting on their own right. It's going to be a monster I can tell you that much!

Yay, another Ran owner on the board 8) Looks real good, glad to see you asked for the old-school Ran logo :) Which case have you got with it?

Congrats on the axe, let us know how she plays when you get it :)

WOW that is some guitar porn rite there! I love the binding / border inlay on the neck. How much did that set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Kudos, buddy. And welcome to the Custom Club!

They're very cheap for what they are: about 800 quid, I believe. But thats for one of their lines. I dont know how much the price cranks up for custom work, but I've heard its quite a bit.

Thats the thing that put me off Ran (when I was hunting for a custom). Well, one of two things. They seem to focus on specific models. Thats not custom, to me. And the other is they didnt reply to my quote request!

I'm sure the guitar you get is superb and would work out great if you want something similar to one of their lines (that looks like Jeff Waters guitar with a different paint job and extra flashy MoP trim) and if they notice your email/s, but those things put me off (I went with Legra in the end, cos of getting exactly what I wanted and Bob answering dozens of emails in detail).

I'm still quite tempted by a Ran, actually, cos some of their lines are pretty close to the kind of thing I like, but if it happens, its gonna have to wait.

I want to see what the new blackmachine models are like first anyway

Really? I can see how someone can be turned off by those things.

Actually I sent them an email yesterday about if I could be able to supply them the pickups and the tremolo unit and today (Sanday) they answered and said "no problem". I was quite shocked by this hehe.

I think they can do everything shape-wise and from what I've heard it will be 1500 to 2000 or something similar. I'm thinking of an exact soloist.

If there would be any problem in shape choice, there's always Shamray.;)

Well, given the mental long waiting time, I thought "maaaaaaaybe". Things are cheaper if they take a long time to pay for  and just asked for another quote. Rans work seems to be universally praised, after all.

I'm not saying I'm getting one....just seeing if they reply this time, how much it would be and we'll see how much I want a pimped explorer. (All things considered I think I'd still rather get another of Legra, cos I know how utterly spectacularly awesome Bobs guitars and service are....but theres also a bit of me that wants to try new things rather than stick with the first good thing I find....I dunno. I'm not even sure I'm getting one! I have 9 guitars that fill their purposes very well already!!! Just dabbling.....)

I hear you.;)

I actually want to get this guitar from Ran, then a VHT UL with the cab and I'm set (actually still searching for the cab - if not its own :P).

Maybe after a long time I'll get a Tele or a Strat for the more bluesy stuff. An LP wouldn't be a bad idea too. lol

Anyway, for the heavy kind of thing I think I'll be fine with the Ran and the VHT.

I think you will to! They do look stunning, and handmade >>> factory made every time, and they're cheap so you cant really go wrong

If you can get them to reply to you

Allrighty then,

The edge of the fretboard is ebony, the mop binding goes around the fretboard and the headstock in the same manner.

The guitar cost me 1820 with flight case and shipping included.

So about 1300£ Still a nice price!!

I very much doubt I'll pull the trigger at less than a grand. But thats given that I like all my guitars (and have an amazing custom to my spec and another custom thats pretty fantastic that wasnt made for me [long story]) already!

The truth is in the playing, but that looks great on paper, neemo!

Tell us all about it when you get it!!!

tell that to fenders custom shop.

to me, that process is custom guitar building - you take a known shape and customize it for the specific customers needs.

On my more arty farty days i prefer to think about myself as a maker of bespoke instruments   except for the fact i have been doing a few with more normal shapes recently... i suppose that puts me back as a custom builder

anyway, nice V.  good and simple with a few elegant touches

Very very nice V. I looks incredibly classy but evil at the same time.

I dont care what they call themselves, unless they'd at least try to make me a guitar thats half explorer, half ironbird with 4 warpigs, all wired in series all the time, 27 frets, a trident for a headstock, nuclear explosion graphic finish and smiley face inlays its not custom  :P

Not that I'd want said guitar....well, I probably wouldnt

Bespoke might be a better word for it, though, yeah.

Ran do have some email problems occasionally, even when i was talking to them during the build of mine there were problems (over a year ago)- so they're not just ignoring you :)

Ran will do any bodyshape you like- just take a look at their gallery, there are a lot more than their Invader and Cruiser models. Dariusz is happy to produce multiple quotes based on different parameters; ie. maple top or just body wood etc. They'll even do things like let you change their logo- their current logo is a block letter type, but many people prefer the old curvier style. Other people have even had it in different fonts, even on the back of the headstock with nothing on the front (there was even a Ran logo made to look like the Dean 'wings' logo for a Dime tribute guitar, that was made from silver, looked really good :)). Most people tend to do a 'variation-on-a-theme' from the regular models, because they look good to begin with ;)

They are good for the price, i'd love to get another, but i can't afford it now as they were cheaper when i got mine :)

Ok, I wont hold it against them then.

I'm more seriously considering a Ran all the time, here.

Someone PLEASE tell me that 9 guitars, with 3 super-guitars, 2 of them customs and one wholly to my spec and totally fantastic is enough!

Anyone?
Title: Ran custom
Post by: WezV on December 03, 2007, 03:10:46 PM
its never enough!!!

on the whole custom thing its quite likely that most people who order a ran ask for a specific shape they have seen somewhere else.  Most people that get guitars from me ask for a shape they know or a shape i have done before.  very few come to me with there own idea for a shape  - - they are quite welcome to though

cheers mark! :)

and that ran is really nice, neemo. :)

EDIT: ran answered my emails really quickly when I emailed them around the time I was emailing bob @ legra too. What put me off was the wait... something like 8 months.

when you get your V let me know how it plays, I'd eventually like to get a Ran myself

hell I want an 8 string V for Meshuggah riffing, I wonder if BKP would do a special 8 string pickup just for me :P

BKP have done 8 string pickups for customers before but you have to supply the bobbins for it I think.

Ran don't do 8 strings yet unfortunately :( But as Steve said, BKP can wind an 8 string, and Tim said that they were developing a 8 string model, i'm not sure when it was going to be ready, but it's probably not too far away :)

I didn't see this thread before.  I normally don't particularly like the look of Vs.  Or white guitars.

BUT that is AWESOME :)

Great stuff!

I've decided.

No ran. No need. I cant reasonably expect it to do anything my current guitars dont.

I am going to keep my fingers crossed about the blackmachine custom shop opening its doors again, though!

Just went and got a quote on a dream guitar. Won't really be able to afford it right now but I'd be interested in what they'd charge.

Oh and it's VOMITBURST and has a satsuma holding a switch-blade on there somewhere.

I'll post transcript of the quote.
