This months Guitarist features the all new PRS Mira.
I must say, I think I want one, despite its rather odd name.
Anyone else see the review?
PS also some good chat about BKP p-91's in the road test section...good bit of advertising there.
-
It didn't appeal to me. I prefer the looks of red Gibson LP Specials or SGs for all-Mahogany guitars.
And I think the price tag is a bit high for what it is really. It doesn't fit the PRS brand if you ask me.
If you ask me, they should rather bring down the price of their SC245 and SC250 models instead of trying hard to aim for the alternative scene.
-
I agree with Hunter, 100%.
A Gibson '61 reissue SG is a much better proposition.
-
i haven't tried one, but on a purely superficial level, i didn't much like the looks of it.
Haven't got as far as reading the review yet, i've barely finished reading guitar buyer!
-
Yes, unfortunately the price tag prices me out! I could get a few MIJ's for that four figure price tag.
I'd be all over the Korean version.
PRS guitars are so well made these days. Well at least the ones I've tried anyway.
-
much like mesa, they're just too dear for what they are in the UK, if you ask me. cut the prices in two, and then you have a good guitar at a decent price. Now you just have a good guitar for a hilarious (for PRS) price.
-
definately overpriced for what it is but i am sure they will be nice. Its a bit strange when you read the interview with the designer and he is talking about using the available necks from the other models, not really that bad i suppose but i am the kind of person that expects a new model to be built from the ground up - especially at the PRS price bracket. Mass production at its finest with boutique price tags!!!

you pretty much just summed up PRS as a company.
i read the review... it looks weird to me - doesn't fit PRS. if they want the alternative scene on their side they should do something about that pointy headstock too - i still reckon the Santana II headstock would look great on that mira...

Talking about headstock, I have once seen a picture of a Cameo painted PRS that had a headstock that was a hybrid of Ibanez and PRS, it looked awesomely gorgeus but never seen it again!

that thang is MENTAL

The Dan Spitz signature... hmmmm.
I'm not a fan.
-
tbh i think the alternative bands that can afford PRS's will use them anyway if thats what they want - infact one of my clients (bassist) bands have just got an endorsement with PRS... i think they are tagging themselves as new wave desert funk, whatever that means its not what you would normally associate with PRS and i know they dont play the new mira either. hey have an endorsement from orange as well, thats probably more what you would expect

Agreed, it's shiteeous. I really can't understand why he wanted that headstock shape - I suppose he just prefers 6-a-side tuners, but still...
As for the Mira, I asgree that doesn't quite fit the PRS brand image, but in its own right, I like it a lot. Count me in for the SE version.
One thing I thought was stupid - they have a 3-way Tele-style switch then an annoying little mini-switch for coil-splitting. Why not have a 5-way switch with coil-splitting in the in-between positions?

I agree that getting a custom built guitar will give you something with a lot more character.
The PRS guitars are incredibly well made, and the quality control is spot on but they feel a bit "samey" to me. If you go looking for a Fender or a Gibson you have to try 20 to find the one that screams, but at least you will find one. With the PRS they all seem at a higher quality than much of the Fender /Gibson product but you hardly ever get one that stands out.

well - you would

I'm going to email PRS and see if they plan a SE Mira version. That would be very nice indeed.

Naturally!
I dont thnk that £1400 is all that bad for a really well made guitar .
PRS do have pretty good quality control but whether the instruments will have that little bit of something special that will make them sell by the dozen is another matter.
My guess is that they will sell pretty well.
-
So I emailed them

I'll email them too - see if we can get something in the works ;)
-
I wouldn't be at all surprised to see an SE version if it's successful.
Or even if it isn't - maybe they'll decide it's better suited to a lower price bracket, like the EG, Paul Allender or Billy Martin models.
-
+1 on the fender & gibson thing, I just don't like them at all.....

Better now? I think that some modifications can be a nice headstock:

yeah, me too. PRS are nice guitars, no doubt, but well over a grand, sometimes over 2, for what is basically a production line guitar doesn't sit too well with me, especially when I know that you, or bob, or many other guys could make me something entirely to my spec, which'd most likely be better, for less.
:)
-
Better now? I think that some modifications can be a nice headstock:
That is a little better, with the reverse headstock, HH pickups and no stupid "U.S." inlays or Gretsch-style master volume on the lower horn. You're a better designer than Danny Spitz, Fernando. :)
But I still hate the spalt-camo finish, and I think the standard PRS headstock perfectly matches the body shape, why change it?
I can see something to like about most guitars, but I really do think the Dan Spitz PRS is a monstrosity. It's horrible! :(

Thank you Phill!
Well, the color of the body I just let it, in my mind I have a Spalted Maple clear, or anything else...
I like the way this headstock fitted and I like the original... A reason to build this instead the original is: the lawers of PRS are very good hehehehe :D
-
Ah and I have made some small modifications on the shape of the headstock :D
-
PRS are great guitars, and I disagree Jonathan, you can find PRSs that really stand out, and just like Gibson and Fender, you have to try 20 to find it, but they do exist.
Only problem is, they're all good, unlike Gibson and Fender, so it's harder.
A pre factory PRS is one of the best production guitars you can ever buy, and they're still good now, even after upscaling.
And also, to the custom point - I think alot of custom builders would ask for a grand on top of what PRS charge if you asked them for say, a Custom 24, with the bird inlays and gorgeous purple flamed top.
-
Oh, and all insults of Spitz's PRS must be removed now.

IT HAS THE TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, HOW CAN IT BE BAD?!

Maybe I just didn't get to play enough of them in a row - they are good guitars , but pale when compared to pre-factory ones of which I have played quite a few . I have owned quite a few as well but none were ever special enough that I hung onto them.

Agreed and they did feel different - I really did like some of those but they never for sale (the nicest one belonged to my boss: Doug Chandler at the time when I worked at Chandler Guitars)
BTW - Noodle- how many pre-factory PRS have you played on - or are you just quoting what you have heard on the net?
And also, to the custom point - I think a lot of custom builders would ask for a grand on top of what PRS charge if you asked them for say, a Custom 24, with the bird inlays and gorgeous purple flamed top.
I think you'd be surprised at times, although you would expect a custom shop guitar to be more. If I wasn't a guitar builder I would probably love a Private Stock PRS to be fair....
-

Only 2, one of them belonging to my guitar teacher - And that's a bit unfair actually, since everyone I've spoken to that's played it, including Doug from BM, say it's one of the best guitars they've ever played.

Thats cool !
They are very nice if you get a good one.... Doug has had a couple of artist models that are nice as well
I only asked because on internet forums people tend to quote or repeat stuff they have read or heard without ever having experienced it firsthand.
You know the kind of stuff - someone talking about the good and bad points of pre-CBS strats and saying stuff as gospel (and telling others that they are wrong) and then you find out that they are 14 and have never played a Fender other than their mate's Squier strat.

I rest my case, m'lud.

And you would need to be a millionnaire! Those are really too expensive...minimum price is at about 25 000 euros. And there is no limit..Btw,i did play with some (2) pre-factory PRS and i'm not sure if they were "better" ...they did feel different and looked a bit different (the carving was more pronounced etc..) but i couldn't say if they were better.PS:i'm only talking about the original design Custom here...

Sorry guys, cannot argue taste, but I LOVE THIS HEADSTOCK!

Just been looking at the Mira and the cheapest around are shy of £1100 in the UK and dealers in the US are less then $1500.
How much does the shipping cost from the USA. The street price is $1500 @ £750 at the current exchange rate. Why is there such a difference in price?

you'd have to pay shipping but also import duty and VAT around 27% on top of your price plus delivery and if you take that into consideration and risk of shipping from US (you never know what might happen). Its pushing it a bit for an instrument you don't even get to play before buying. :x
-
that's not actually that much of a price difference, at least compared to mesas and the like- i'd wager with that amount of price difference, it's not worth it- customs and shipping are liable to bring it up to at least the £1000 mark.
