Bought it as a birthday/xmas present for myself (bday on the 14th) :D
An original 70's or 80's Yamaha SG1000. Only slight fogging and apart from that mint condition according to the seller. Mahogany body, 3 piece maple top, ebony board :D Should be here by Wednesday.

don't be stealing my titles now!
nice score though. They play and sound very nice, people are always on the look out for them
-
hope your backs ok... the ones i have played would easily rival most les pauls for weight. Excellent guitars though - i do regular maintenance work on one very similar and its a real beauty
-
Heh the weight is part of the reason why I chose the Yamaha SG. I like my guitars meaty and substantial
-
Very nice.
Always want one of these.
-
thats a tasty looking morcel indeed! any BKPs planned or you gonna see how it sounds?
-
That looks bloody great. I've always liked the Yammy SG's.
If I didn't have a Les Paul already I would buy one of those. It's just too good a guitar to have only as a back up.
Mind you ... I still may get one :)

Lovely guitar !
I remember the guitar player in a local ( Leeds ) band playing one of these around 1980 - and it sounded great. If your seller used to be in a band called 'Dodgy Tactics' - it's probably the same tone machine. In any case, it had a unique voice, as I recall it sounded like a good heavy Les Paul with a sprinkling of Gibson S.G. for good measure. The lovely moist ebony fretboard and quality inlays looked like a dream to play on !
Enjoy !

I doubt it'd be that FF. The seller is from Preston. Heavy LP with a sparkle in sound is exactly what I want :)
I'm gonna see how it sounds first obviously but I might get the pups rewound to Mules or Crawlers spec if it sounds lacking.
I can't wait!

As much as I love the Mules in my Les Paul Standard, to do that '59 thing - I am 'hearing' Crawlers in my mind as an extension of that lovely creamy fat Yammy S.G. sound.
( Just a thought )
-
Having heard a few of these before, I don't think there's any danger in the sound from it's pup's lacking.
It may not be the tone that you want but you're going to get a solid, full tone from it - if it's still in full working order of course.
Oh God ... I suddenly have the urge to go and buy one :)
-
I'd have an SG1000 over most Gibbos. :)
-
Beautiful git!
You're giving me ideas of black pup rings and pickguard for my Cherryburst LP.
-
that's very nice. :)
-
:D Always been a fan of Yamaha SG`s. Very very good guitars.
:D 8)

Sweetheart, the guitar not you ;)
Nice looking beastie, I always had a soft spot for them, and much more vercatile than people think
-
That's a very nice looking one. These guitars love Crawlers. Other pickups that would go well are Rebel Yells, Mules and Abraxas. The Abraxas with AV is the closest to the original pickups.
The original pickups are pretty good, maybe even too good. They're a bit clinical and it feels like it has a built in compressor/limiter so it feels like the pickups are holding you back in your expression. (Does that make sense? )

Almost forgot. Another reason to post mine...........again.

Very nice 8) anyone know if BKP still do the engraved covers?
-
That is a very sweet looking SG there Ratty I might be tempted to buy another in brown if i like the one I'm getting enough.
My guitar's serial number is k000078 apparently, does anyone know how to decode vintage Yamaha's serial no.s? It gives me 'invalid number' when I put it into their serial number wizard. Three piece top was only available on the early ones i think so mine might be one of the first ones ever built. That'd be cool.

Pretty sure they do - I think they needed to get quite a lot of kit to be able to do it in the first place - Doubt they'd throw it all away.

Try e-mailing Yamaha Japan.
On mine, unfortunately, there was a sticker covering the printed on serial number. When I removed the sticker, the serial number was partially gone so Yamaha couldn't help me.
All they could tell me was that my SG400 was a limited production for Europe only in the late 70's.

Got this delivered yesterday. Very well packed, but the guitar was far from what I'd call mint. Anyways on to the guitar.
The guitar is much lighter than I thought. About the weight of a regular Les Paul. Body top is flattter than a Les Paul. Closer to the SG in this respect. The burst in the finish is much more subtle than in the picture. The neck has a quite shallow profile but not too thin. Very comfortable and fast and the heel is beautifully carved. Maybe from the age but the raw resonance is incredible. I think it's got 9s on now but even then it resonates for ages; unplugged I can hear a note for 10 secs easy.
The pups sound thick but I don't think it has enough bite in the bridge. Saying that though, I find pretty much 95% of the guitars I try to be muddy. Maybe my LP Studio with NBs is uber-bright? Didn't really get time to play it much last night so I'll have more play with it before I make my mind up. The push-push pot is fantastic. Much easier to use than a push-pull. Single coil sound is much more convincing than on my LP. It feels like it's currently strung on 9s (because it's really easy to play) so I'll get on to changing that to 11s when I get a chance.
