Title: Opinions about a 2nd hand LP Studio
Post by: Simon D on December 09, 2007, 06:42:13 PM
My local Cash Convertors has a wine red Gibson LP Studio in. It's in decent enough condition - no neck twists, frets are ok, quite a few scratches on the back and near p/u switch, but with its original case. They want £450. I'm tempted, but I already have 8 guitars, including an Epi LP and an SE Singlecut (both BK'ed).

Is it worth having a closer look at the Gibson, or will I just want to tip out another £250 on a set of BKPs and some new tuners?

huh :?
don't standard LP's have front and neck binding, and the studio doesn't? and your Edwards presumably would have the same as the standard?

Would it be worth trading the Epi in for the Gibson? take any BKP's out of it first ofcourse!

If it were a 'stock apart from BKPs' Epi, then yes, that would be an option.

Unfortunately, since I've had it, it's been refretted, electrics changed and had locking tuners fitted, so trading it in isn't really something I want to do. All that's stuff you couldn't have known though, so thanks for the suggestion.

I like them, you have to find a good one though so i would recommend giving it a good play first, but they are good guitars with a change of pickup and stuff, maybe try and get the price down a few quid too and it would be a great deal.

I'm not into LPs one bit and I really like the Studio. No neck binding, no body binding or flame carved maple tops do make for a minimal looking instrument. It does have a carved maple top but not flamed.

It has a 59 rounded neck and a 498 Alnico in the bridge.

You can always buy a Gibson truss rod cover that says 'Standard' or 'Custom' and say it was made for you by the Gibson custom shop. I'm going for the blank truss rod cover.

Studio can be good guitars but in my opinion you need to do something about the pups... Having said that I lived and played it about ten odd years before considering changing pups or modding them.
