Title: Amp today - Gone Tomorrow
Post by: Dakine on December 11, 2007, 11:39:24 PM
Well,
the Mesa Road King is ney more!

It was just, well, not me :)
Sure it is a swiss army knife but y'know.

So, bought for good price and sold for same, no loss/regrets.

So, now what?

Well Hunter has a 'clubmate'.
I now have a 2007 Bogner Shiva EL34 combo with all the new mods!

This thing IS the tone in my head (and only got it today, read only 4 hours playing thus far, not even hooked up my V30 Bogner cube to it yet).

Built like a tank, cannot find a bad tone, basically sex in black tolex  8)

Gizmo boy, are you ever going to be happy with any amp that you own ?

When are you going to learn that the Nanohead is the one true amp ;)

Enjoy the bogner

Rob...

LOL

Rob, this is the cool thing, to me the Shiva is somewhat like a Grown Up nano, honestly it's THAT good.

Funny but had no trouble getting the tones I wanted straight away and all the while was thinking Nano. :)

Is that with the standard Tele or the flathead ? as I don't think that Hunter has done any single coil clips with his (prepares to be proved wrong)

Flathead, clean, precise, direct yet cool.

PRS, more vintage, organic, chewy :)

Thats not even testing the Rev. G's tuna can yet  Or the BB Preamp I asked the fatman in red for . Or indeed the V30 cube.

Tele (single coil, gone bye bye :)) did'nt ya get me email matey?

Nick

actually I basically 'flipped' the Road King, then found a new Shiva owned by a dealer in some financial pinch ;)

Congrats on the amp.

Strangely, I played a Shiva (EL34 version) for the first time yesterday. Really nice drive channel. I could certainly have lived with it. But the clean channel was not to my liking - very, very clean and hi-fi. I like a bit of hair and balls on my cleans.
All in all, I thought it was a really good amp, but (thankfully) was not going to tempt me to part with my current rig.

Interesting what you say about the Shiva Alan - I'd love to try one to compare with my JTM45/HT Dual rig...

Same here. I'm selling my Ampeg for the same reason. When it's sold I'll probably go for a Fender Bandmaster Reverb.

Welcome to the Club!

Two tips from an accomplished Shiviatic:

1. Try this on the clean chnnel: Drive full, Bass and Treble on "0". It's a nice "clean-ish" sound with a bit of hair on it

2. Get an Xotic RC booster. Try Gain 9 AM, Vol 1 PM, Treb and Bass both 11 AM.
It's basically what should have been built in into the Shiva as additional gain boost, but Reinhold forgot it 8)
No but trust me, it really is the perfect companion if you want to push the drive channel into a smoother higain territory a la XTC without it mudding out.

Really happy to have a Shiva companion in this forum and looking forward to some awesome clips!

The clean channel is so divine (esp. with the spring reverb) I find myself in more unknown territory by playing it ALOT, it's almost a Mystic exp.

Hunter, will try. Am actually gonna try a BB Preamp me thinks rather than an AC/RC. Not tryed my Gibbons Tuna Can just yet either.

I don't 'hear' any of the amp as hi-fi, hard to describe, sounds like tone in my head from thousands of recordings and concerts, kinda real/professional. The clean channel is sooooooo REAL guess it takes bit of getting used to. Now hi-fi is the Herbert to me, so much so it feels false playing it (to my ears in my humble opinion).

Just wish it came with a 'trunk monkey' to carry it, darn this combo is heavy. Least Bogner offer a head cab for conversion if so desire.

Is the gain nicer than the Mesa then?

And why?
Title: Amp today - Gone Tomorrow
Post by: Dakine on December 13, 2007, 07:42:13 PM
Tone is SOOOOOOOOO subjective so it's almost impossible to explain.

Mesa was/is cool but always sounds less open and more false, all to my ears.

The poss. to blend/use different tubes on the RK was great but it still all sounded less real and cold to my ears.

The Shiva just sounds way more ALIVE! It's like you have been transported to the studio and not listening to a CD, that kinda of realism.

The gain on the Shiva is all useable and is sooooo attack dependant it's amazing. Straight it is less aggressive to my mind than the Mesa can get but then it's 2 chan. and not a recto.

Tonewise, try this analagy (I am extemely long sighted and if you have 20/20 vision you may not get this).
Imagine wearing glasses, they correct your vision, allow you to see, but are somewhat false and limiting (Mesa) now imagine wearing contacts (maybe even having corrective surgery) everywhere you look is clear, you can wear normal sunglasses, no-one can really tell, everything is more lively and trasparent (Shiva).

Best I can do :)

But after owning, ENGL, Marshall, Mesa and Rivera for me, Bogner is the dawgs bollox
