Title: Breaking in Speakers
Post by: TomW on December 13, 2007, 08:59:37 PM
I've got another Celestion G12H-30 on the way and I'm just wondering if there is any way of breaking in speakers other than just playing through them? I don't get a chance to crank my amp very often and it seems to be taking ages for the G12H-30 that I've already got to break in properly.
Any ideas?

Cheers

put it next to your stereo speakers, or anything that makes noise that could vibrate them

'fraid not. It really just needs to have plenty of signal run through it for a while. I'm still breaking in my new speakers. I bloody love them, they're sounding better and better and better (than I possibly imagined!)

K, well I've managed to book a room for band rehearsal all day this weekend so I'll get the amp cranked for a while and hopefully that will do the trick :twisted:

I always break my speakers in using;

CD player > headphone out > 'old solid state 150 w guitar amp> speaker cab.

I can then play any music I like- generally a whole mixture to cover all the spectrum etc. With some of the higher wattage speakers I've 'arranged'  for the family (bribes involved) to go out for the day whilst it blasts away............

If you can find a way to run a pink noise sample through them (download one, then line out your soundcard to the line in or something) then that works wonders for speakers.

When I got my cab brand new, I broke in the speakers by snatching all of my mother's gigantic, over-sized bed and couch pillows and stuffing them in front of and around the cab.

Then I dimed every knob on the head and played for like two hours. Then when I got tired, I ran my MP3 player in to it for a few hours. Then I played my guitars through it again some time later.

And repeated for a few days   8)

Though you could kinda feel the bass in the floor, the sound didn't really bother anyone too much during the normal day...

Thanks for the idea :D  My room is now half full of quilts, pillows and towels covering my cab. I can only turn my amp up just under half way with my hotplate on before it gets abit too loud but hopefully it will still break in the speakers abit faster. :twisted:
