Ok, so what distortion pedals would you recommend? I play a mix of modern and old metal, well more modern. I like it to sound heavy yet clear, if that makes sense? Also I have a set of nailbombs on the way, they should make a difference. :D
Oh and just like to mention I'm new here, so hello.
-
Out of them, I'd have a Landmine.
Although I'd sooner have a Krank Distortus Maximus...
-
I've played most of those except the Landmine, but that's the 1 I'd pick!
If your budget can stretch to it, I've heard good things from the G2D Morpheus and HBE FMJ (Full Metal Jacket) when it comes to heavier sounding distortion pedals.
-
what about the EHX metal muff?
The landmine sounded great when I heard it btw
If you want to spend more then zvex have just made a metal pedal. The youtube clips sound good but it is alot more expensive.
-
how about cooltron bulldog...2 channel distortion...and half price at mo at soundcontrol £50 an is valve
-
there was a Keeley modded MT-2 in the seconds out forum for £70 i think fairly recently!
-
I'm using a line 6 spider II, and tbh I can't seem to get a nice distortion tone out of it, my mate recommended the digitech metal master as you can 'morph' the setting? :s

I'm using a line 6 spider II
... that's the reason...
-
Cruel but true MR ed, but a good warm distortion in front of them can work quite well
-
I have a marshall shredmaster clone for sale.
But that's 80's style disto.
Other than that I use a Big Muff for my hi-gain needs.
-
I've got a big muff (I don't shout that much) that I use to use in my bass days, don't use it so much now though.
-
Those Dano pedals are more fuzzes despite what they say on the box, so stay away from them.
-
Flog the Line 6 and get a half decent amp would be a pretty good start!
I've heard good things about the landmine though

That was me. Sold for £65 way less than I paid for it

The Boss Metal Zone sounds too fake no matter what you use it on. I absolutely detest this pedal. All my other pedals are Boss, though. I have the Boss DS-1 and it suits me fine.
But I have to agree with the statements about the amp. When I worked in a music store I had access to all the amps. The Spider II is an awful amp. It's good if you're just starting out, but a one year student will quickly out grow it. Can't go wrong with a true tube amp!

That pedal looks HAWT, i might have to pick me up one of thems!!

I love my bulldog but got gas....pill might cure it if not am thinkin of getting that guy mentioned here http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10594
to make me something

I hope you realize that distortion pedals dont work with the Spiders. Digital preamp doesn't work with solid state distortion circuitry. Thats like expecting to get HUGE differences in tone when switching emg's between guitars, it just doesnt happen.
Get a new amp, one with decent amp distortion.

Ah cr@p, hey thanks for the info....

what do you mean don't work? if you mean won't sound great, fair enough, but of course they work. i've used an overdrive pedal through a pod before with no problems. maybe you mean booster pedals? if so, then you're absolutely right, but a distortion pedal will work fine.

When I played the Spider II amp, no matter what guitar I played, the amp sounded the same. From el cheapo to high end guitars, it didn't matter, the Spider II has its own sound. It's not like plugging into a tube amp where the characteristics of the guitar come through, and changing guitars changes tones. That's what I love the most about tube amps.
The Spider II also lacks dynamics.
-
MXR Distortion +?
-
The Damage Control Solid Metal is a great valve based distortion pedal, and IMHO manages the clear yet heavy sound you're after. Definitely worth an audition.
Paul.

You probably also realise what you should do, just take that next step, maybe you should hang on to the spider till you have a sound your happy with.
IMVH opinion the Metal master is the most simple straight foreward, cant really do any harm, metal tone. I still have the death metal pedal, it has the most extreme bottom end boost there is in a pedal, i never turn it up though since its a really cr@ppy pedal, didnt toss it because nobody seems to want one! The death metal pedal only sounds 'good' when boosted with another pedal, on its own it sounds like p@@p.
Very high gain pedal is the MI audio Crunchbox, screamingly loud even if you have the first version, distortion is good but not very natural sounding.
If you like oldskool natural sounding drive i would suggest a Proco Rat or Boss OD-1 or OD-3. The OD-1(discontinued) is the most versatile of them all and is very low noise, just the best IMO.
Getting a good metal (like) tone out of decent gear is never much of a problem, try to get some analogue gear together, digital effects or amps always do lack dynamics, they do that for a reason, sloppy playing even sounds good under heaps of digital processing. Still if you actually want to hear what you are playing youll need to make that step eventually.
Best of luck and succes, great things will happen when your gear makes you work for it HARD

What about a Line 6 Uber Metal pedal? Chap at my local guitar shop recommended it over a Dime distortion pedal, said it has the same settings like the mid scoop, and was £80 cheaper!
-
I'd go with the Metal Master. It's a great pedal for the modern metal stuff and it doesn't have that 'scratchy' tone that alot of distortion pedals have.
-
strangely out of all the petals I've tried, t he MT2 was actually the best.
I know it may sound strange, but I absolutely hated the sound when I first heard my friend play through it, but after a while of borrowing his it really grew on me, and I eventually bought my own.
hope that helps somewhat...
