Title: Looking for a massive distortion with fat leads
Post by: Neemo on December 15, 2007, 10:52:40 AM
So, the custom arrived at last from Ran guitars:

(http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/34976/2766004840100154862S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://good-times.webshots.com/photo/2766004840100154862EtdLSO)

It has an emg 81 in it at the moment since I didn't want to go through all the hassle with sending a bkp to poland etc. etc.

Anyways, now I'm trying to decide which pickup would suit this geetar the best. I want a nice and tight chugging sound (something like Diablo on Eternium (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNrRMDBQ0bk)) to palm mutes but I also want the leads to sound very full. (eg. the solo in Dissection's Dark mother divine).

I'll be playing through a Mesa Quad preamp, a VHT 2/90/2 power amp and a bogner uberkab (2x V30 and 2x Eminence Wizard).

Oh, and the cleans don't matter at all. I have another guitar for that ;) As long as the distortion is tight and clear since I'm in a two guitar band I'll be sound as a pound  8)

I would suggest Miracle Man for that, though the suggestion could depend on what wood's are on that beast?

I'd say Miracle Man or Painkiller. Depends how much mids you want in your sound as the Painkiller has lots whilst the Miracle Man has less but still chuggy.

:D nice guitar

my suggestion for a 1 pickup guitar is "warpig"

tight with a very full sound. Versatil monster

go for the alnico V version with double screws for extra tightness and I recommend a pull/push switch so that you can get a second sound if needed.

Congrats Neemo!

Thats a fine looking guitar.  I have an RR1 exactely with the same specs but black. Tim told me that the Miracle Man would be to bright in the RR1 so he suggested a Nailbomb because i wanted to play some cleans with it. I can't speak for the Painkiller but.......

Ask Tim if he thinks a ceramic Warpig can fit in the Ran guitar ...buy the way how much did you pay for the guitar and how long took it to get that beast?

It cost me 1820 euros and it took about a year and 3 months to complete. A lot longer than I expected but Ran has been really busy with orders lately and I made few additional changes during the build. It's a true beast (heavy as hell itself? 8)).

I'm leaning a bit towards the warpig since this is going to be a full-blown metal monster. Kinda undecided between alnico and ceramic still though...

I'd say a ceramic warpig!

I have one in my SG (modded to 1 pickup), it's a huge sound!! Handles hardcore very well

Pretty trebly woods and shape, I'd avoid the miracle man.

Painkiller would probably balance if you want a load of mids

I'd go for a warpig though. Ceramic one.

It seems that ceramic warpig is the no 1 contestant so as soon as I can rub together a few pieces of green I'll order it right away.

I played mine last night at practice for the first time through my 5150 II at a high volume, i had it on 4.

IT WAS $%&#ING LOVELY!!!!

I couldn't believe my ears!! I've only played with the ceramic warpig before in my flat at nieghbour friendly volumes

It really made me think twice about selling my 5150 II and getting the egnater because it sounded THAT GOOD last night

Cool, seams like the 5150 amps is a keeper!

I just ordered my Warpig , covered, black, plain finish with ceramic magnet.

The Egnater is too tempting though
