Cool clip of Frank Zappa trying to explain freedom of expression to a bunch of fools in the eighties.
-
Hot-button topic in the late 80s. (Look up PMRC hearings)
Zappa was a genius, so far beyond those other clowns!!
-
Ripped them a new one indeed. I'll keep my views on America and censorship to myself I think, but regardless I think Zappa's views are the only sane and well researched ones on show. The other guy was a joke, pages of notes and still got shite wrong.
-
"Why should I be smile, I'm sitting here with you"
-
I saw that a while ago...
He doesn't exactly rip them a new one, but it's still a good watch.
I laughed when I saw Hot to Teacher :D
-
20 minutes is not nearly enough time to even get into the subject at hand, but Zappa did a great job at making sure his view was heard.
His prediction about the fascist Theocracy? Chilling ....

I think that's one of the points of this thread, isn't it?
Though, unless you're from America, I doubt you will fully understand how oppressive it really is here in 'the land of the free'. I'm fortunate enough to have have lived my life in an area that is noted for going against the grain ... I shudder to think what life must be like in either the Midwest or below the Bible Belt!!!

Well I have nothing against Americans. I love people. I'm far too nice to be racist in any way. I just disagree about countries being run according to a Holy Book, of any description really. I'd love to discuss this, but not on the internet, has to be the worst way of communicating views and opinions ever.

Yeah it was too short an amount of time to really get to grips with the issue.
But John Lofton, (the dude harassing Zappa constantly) is just a joke. He doesn't seem to even understand the concept of free speech.
And he's playing dirty as well, always trying to get Zappa to admit to advocating incest or something by asking leading questions, "Do you support lyrics that advocate incest"... Does the guy really think Zappa supports incest or is he just trying to catch him out?! I dunno... stupid.
But yeah, I can't comment on America as have never been there, but from an outsiders point of view the influence and scale of Christianity does seem pretty scary.

If you haven't ,you should do a search on the PMRC and the hearings; I think you'll find it a very interesting snapshot of that time in the USA.
-
Will do Ben. What's the "PMRC"?. I guess I'll find out in a sec anyway. :)
-
With hair like that, John Lofton has no right to criticise anything.
-
^Too true beatle!
Ben I checked out the PMRC thing... MAAAN!
The woman at the forefront of that organisation was beyond belief.
-
:D The woman at the forefront of the whole PMRC thing as i remember was Tippa Gore.........Ale Gore`s wife yes thats the vice president Al Gore whos recent docu film "An Uncomfortable Truth" got lots of appluadits.
In fact it was the evidence given by Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider that really shot down the entire argument in the hearings. They were questioning his lyrics for the TS song "Under The Blade" which he wrote about the guitarists tonsillitis operation.
