Title: The best christmas movie?
Post by: Muso on December 20, 2007, 02:54:56 PM
I've been looking around the boards lately and there arn't too many festive themed posts so I thought it would be nice to talk about christmas movies. Now I know most of them are total cr@pola but there are some wicked ones.

For me the best christmas movie has to be Tim Burtons Nightmare Before Christmas!

I love everything about this movie, the music the animation, the theme, just so weird and wonderful.

Not checked the tv guide but I hope theyre showing it, as it aint christmas for me without this being on TV!

Nice to see a Festive topic.

It's a tough choice but I would have to go for ... It's a Wonderful Life.

It's an absolute classic and pushes all the right Christmas buttons for me.

Jingle all the way. Arnuld kicking loads of Santas in the crotch and battling against his neighbour, the guy who voices Troy Mcclure. Inspired film-making.

It has to be 'It's a Wonderful Life'............
'Scrooged' a close second
'Santa Claus The Movie' in third, simply becasue of Dudley Moore, and John Lithgow doing his insane bad guy bit that he does so well (see Cliffhanger! )

Die Hard.

You know I'm right!

I think you probably are.  :D

I also like the 1951 version of A Christmas Carol (with Alistair Sim as Scrooge).

And Black Christmas.

Not a chance.

Mel Gibson pretending to be mad by messing his hair up and jumping off a building does not compete with Bruce W kicking terrorist ass.  Not for a second.

From what I've read, it seems A Christmas Story has a big cult following in the US, but it's pretty much unknown here in the UK.  I've certainly never seen it.

(As mentioned above, I like Bob Clark's other, very different, Christmas movie, Black Christmas!)

I'll stick in a vote for Die Hard.
But Hard Boiled is good too (even if not a Christmas film)

A Christmas Carol with Alastair Sim. Probably should have clarified what constitutes a 'Xmas' movie and those movies that occur at Xmas.

Not only another forum member who has heard of Hard Boiled the greatest action film ever made bar non imho but [ gulps ! ] a woman  :o

Will you marry me !!!

Crazy Joe you`ve just gone down in my estimation. Will Ferrel has never been funny on film in his entire career only the Blue Oyster Cult parody on US tv was funny.

Watched Black Christmas on Film4 just now. I'm sure the killer was Buckethead  .

Apart from that I wouldn't say it was the best film I've ever seen by a long shot (As far as seasonal horror goes Hallowe'en kicks it shiteless purely on the  basis of the soundtrack.). Some of the filming was beautifully done; especially for the first person sections.

Come guys, what about "The Great Escape" or have I totally misunderstood the point of this thread for rather tenuous comedic purposes.

Well around Xmas, Zulu is always on, does this mean that our society values this as an Xmas movie then?

silly history teacher forgets he has shown it to us already, and has shown us the same part of it in each lesson over the past week and a half.

How about the Grinch, I think that sticks in my mind every year

There are, unfortunately, countless thousands, probably millions, of people in this country who will never watch a foreign language film with subtitles, no matter how great it is.  I even know people who won't watch anything in black & white.

I love Hard Boiled, but for sheer non-stop adrenaline-rush excitement my favourite action movie is Ong Bak.

In no particular order :

Diehard, Scrooged, It's a Wonderful Life I will also raise you the following

The David Lean version of Oliver Twist (just reminds me of christmas)
The Marx Brothers (for those late evenings between Boxing day & New Year)

Most Christmas's I end up watching Moonraker, but wishing I'm watching Live or Let Die.
If I had to watch any Christmas movie I would probably chose Muppets Christmas Carrol.
 No what was I thinking the best Christmas film is Gremlins!

Hard Boiled is fantastic, but I humbly submit that The Killer is better, and I'm a fella with a serious John Woo mancrush.
