Title: What high gain head.......
Post by: AdamB on December 21, 2007, 05:36:06 PM
Right, i'm getting a new amp in the next month or so.

I've had a 5150 II for the last 3 or 4 years and although i love it, i'm just going for something a bit more specialised.

I'm on the waiting list for a Egnater Mod 50, and that was the only amp i ever wanted to look at until i thought, wait a minute, i can literally have any amp i choose!! I've been saving up for so long and of course, i'll have the money from my peavey when i sell that.

So what other options are there?

Diamond, Bogner, Mesa, ENGL, Diezel, Soldano etc

What would you reccomend?

I quite like hand made amps, they seem that much more special

I don't really need a clean channel, i just want the most drool worthy overdrive ever.

Thanks

2. Diezel VH4
3. Mesa 2ch Dual Recto

My top 3 ;)

I had mesa rectifier 2 channel head, black plate model, it looked lovely, didn't like the sound that much, well, i did, just not as much as my 5150 II.

What about a Soldano Avenger?

The simplicity is appealing

If I didn't want a clean channel, I'd be sorely tempted to stick with the 5150.

Some people (me included) like the dense, intense & slightly "spongy" sound of a Mesa Rectifier but it's not for everyone.  I've heard good things about the Bogner Uberschall & I'd love to try a VHT Deliverance (tried a 100CLX years back & loved it).

But 5150 is a fantastic metal amp.  Do you really want to get rid of it or do you just fancy a new toy?  How about a BBE for the 5150's FX loop?

I just think there are better amps on the market, and fancy a new toy!

Soldano Avenger is great. I really do need 2 channels and a loop, but almost bought it anyways, just to hug it once in a while.

Best drive channel I ever played, and trust me, I played some

I know when I was trying out lots of high gain heads, the 5150 mkII was only beaten to the top spot by the VH4 I tried.  Apparently the Herbert is even more of a monster, so defo try that one out.

I tried the current VHT Pitbull in Turnkey but wasn't that impressed.  otoh, I remember trying one when they first got imported by Sound Control about 10 years ago and that one was fantastic.

I've recently tried a Bogner Uberschall and it was very tasty indeed.  However, I still think the VH4 cover the same ground AND is more versatile.

Haven't tried the Bogner Ecstacy, but that is supposed to be an awesome amp and the features are very impressive - should be able to cover any style with that amp.

And she's an audiologist!!!

I'm looking for a metal-oriented yet versatile head myself at the moment. I've heard good things about the Koch Powertone II head. The Koch dealer nearest to me sucks though, went over there to try it out, and they didn't have a separate room for the amps or anything. So, basically I couldn't turn the volume beyond 0.5 (out of 10, the things got 120w after all) without being told to "keep it down a bit". Idiots, as if you can get any real sense of a tube amp at those levels :)

Still looking forward to trying one out in a proper setting... There's another dealer that's some 50km from here, might have to make the trip there.

Has anyone else tried the Powertone?

Never seen Koch stocked anywhere to be honest, they're going to my list now. I was meaning for this list to go smaller, haha!

Well to be honest most high gain stuff sounds similar to untrained ears too. Untrained meaning not a metal connoisseur...

My girlfriend is the same though, studying music at Uni and still doesn't care unless I pull out some lovely clean chords with a warm tone... Appreciate the dirt woman!.

Yes do try a Koch Powertone II but crank it for the best effect. As Dave said I've had one 2.5 years now and they are great. It's 3 channel the ultra gain which is just pure evil uses an extra valve in the pre-amp than the gain channel, which is a monster in itself. Both have mid boost/cut and share the EQ. The clean channel has an amazing sound and has it's own EQ. It has two master volume levels which are foot switchable as is the reverb. There is a 3 way speaker damping switch which can dramatically tighten or loosen the sound, especially at high volumes. It has direct outputs for recording, Triode/Penthode power switching. Pretty much all you would need without the silly price tag.

Holiday Music stock them.
