Title: Strat Refinishing Job

Seeing as how the guitarist in me is never really happy with the stuff that I have, I recently decided to give my Mexican Standard Strat a new breath of life.  I sanded the thick poly finish down to basically nothing and asked my friend to paint it.  Now it looks awesome and I'm aiming to re-lacquer it, but don't really know how to go about it.  
I'm afraid nitrocellulose lacquer may be too involved of a process for me to undertake with limited time and budget.  
Any suggestions on the best method to do this?

Gun stock oil.....classic, nice, beautifull

whats it been painted with - there may be compatibility issues.

an oil finish might not work because it will involve rubbing and may remover the paint.

See if you can get some of the paint that was used so you can test on scr@p first

Water based craft paint I think.  The paint markers are printed in German, so I'm not exactly sure.  Hehe
I'm thinking now that maybe a water based sealer would work better for what I'm trying to do.
