Hi!
If you would like to hear what the Apache's sound like, I am using them on "Down to the waterline" I am also using the mule in the neck position on in a cheap les paul copy on "song for sonni Liston".
My website is http://www.stefanprice.com

That's very impressive! I can barely tell the difference between yours and the original. Tha Apaches sound somewhat clearer and brighter.

I'll second that Stefan! Amazing sound! Top production, playing the lot!! :D :D :D Top man!
-
Like the other guys said Stef, you've really got this down well-excellent stuff :D
-
yep that sounded great! I hope I got the right one..the one with singing on it?
-
Loved it - nice one!
-
That's a gorgeous tone, Stefan. What amp(s) were you using?
-
Hi Gary, and thanks for the compliments guys!
On the recent covers I am using the Line 6 Pod XT Live, the sound I end up with is never the sound that I wanted exactly because it sounds different when played back "I use a digital porta-studio" also when I EQ the track to get the whole track sounding better the guitar sound changes aswell.
I think that I used the Fender Twin for "Waterline".
However in a real amp, my choice for that type of sound would be the Fender Vibralux.
The Fender Deluxe and others just don't sound right, I plugged into a Vibralux in Mansons and the sound was there straight away.
The Pod dosent have this simulation.
I think I used the Mashall plexi for Sonni Liston.

Vibralux's sounds vey vey nice! There good few quid too!

I absolutely love Knopfler, and you played brilliantly. Im not keen on the mule sound subjective tho isnt it.
Did you play the knopfler tune using a pick or just fingers?
-
I'm a bit of an aficionado as well, and I must say that was very nice. Tone was almost spot on as well. :) Good website, too.
-
I use my thumb and two fingers, they just sort of rock away in a very percussive way, although I don't have a recording on the website of the short, sharp 12 bar rythmic stuff, but its the same as Knopfler's jazz/country/blues picking that he only did outside of Dire Straits, I also use the third finger sometimes for a 4 string rake.
There are one or two of my own tracks where I have used a pick, but I am not really any good with it.

I tried to get a sound close to what Mark uses on the track "Song for Sonni Liston".
He uses his 1958 Les Paul's alot now, more than strats "He's playing Danelectro's alot too".
With the les paul's he mainly uses the neck pickup with the tone control almost off.
He uses little or no reverb and sometimes uses a wah in the half way position.

Hi Stephan,
just like everybody says, it's really incredible :P !!
Just one question : why did you choose the "Apache" set
to play that music, when there is a "Sultan" set wich I think
must be ment to sound like Knopfler, don't you think ? 8) ...
Did you try both, and is there a reason for your choice ?
Thank's !
Christophe

Yeah, why go for the Apache's? They are alnico III, and I think Knopfler used standard Fender pickups. Probably the same as current '57/'62 reissue pups. And those are alnico 5...
So why didn't you use the Sultans set?
-
'cause AIII sounds a bit aged?
-
What amp/effects do you use? Do you have TAB for that?
-
Amp/effects.
I use a Line 6 Flextone 2, 60 watt combo.
Also a Pod XT-Live.
Why did I choose the Apache's over the Sultans?
Well I couldn't choose, Tim suggested the apache's as I wanted the vintage sound such as with Mark's 61 strat, so I went with those.
I wanted my MK sig Strat to have the vintage sound of the guitar it was based on rather than the Texas Specials that are stock on the model.
I think, and I could be wrong, that Tim named the Sultans, Sultans because they are the cleanest pickups (Alnico 2), and people associate Sultans of swing as one of the most recogisable clean classic strat sounds.
Mark did and still does use Alnico 2 pickups in his main Schecter strats they are Seymour Duncan Alnico Pro 2.
I wanted a pickup that would be the closest to originals for the sig model.

Stephan - just wanted to say that your 'Waterline' clip is the most impressive and enjoyable I've ever heard posted on a guitar forum.
I've just bought the Apache set for my Strat, and the tones you captured on your recording are very encouraging.
I'm a Knopfler fan too, but evidently nowhere near as studious as you...! You've actually inspired me to get off my a*** and learn to play some Knopfler properly!
