Title: Bridge PU to match my Rebel Yell Neck... RG 550
Post by: falcopryor on December 26, 2007, 12:06:11 AM
Brand nubian here on the forum.. I was fortunate enough to get a Rebel Yell early this year.. it's a neck with purple zebra ;) I threw it into my 1st guitar.. a used but loved Ibanez RG550.. it was the 1st neck p/u I've had in 11 years of playing/owning this guitar that was good enough to stay with my bridge JB.. after trying Duncan.. alnico pro II, 59, Pearly Gates, Gibson '57..

Well... now the JB is just not cutting it along side the RY so I need something new.. (and diff. from my Reb.) I've listened to a ton of clips but my gear is a little different.. so here are some that I figure may balance well:

-VHII
-Holydiver
-Emerald?

I'm looking for a p/u that'll kind of be a jack of all trades but with a kick.. the way I use the Reb. and my RG in general..

amps:
'69 Fender Pro Reverb
Yamaha t-50C (Soldano)
and probably a Marshall clone soon (fingers crossed)

Thanks in advance

Have you considered a Rebel Yell bridge?  It's a jack of all trades with a kick.  For a bit more kick I would go with a Holydiver.

I agree with a Rebel Yell bridge...., for a vintage biting tone.

Thanks for the replies fellas.. I appreciate your input.

The Reb. has a nice bite/sizzle to it and I LOVE it in the neck.. but will it have enough body to kick from the bridge? I have read and sort of heard the Holydiver as a JB with more substance? and the VHII has it's rep.. but if the Reb is full enough in the bridge to deliver the goods.. then that may do the trick.. opinions? and what combinations are working for you?

thanks again...

From what I understand the RY bridge has a similarity to the original JB, now I do think that very few people have these pups anymore. Phil King has them. The Holy Diver pups are a modern version of the JB, that's what I have read..... One thing is for sure, its going to be way way better either choice.

Maybe it's the JB that has me fretting a peaky/slightly anemic bridge tone... will the Rebel have enough beef not so wimp out in that position? and a thank you to indysmith for that suggestion... I've enquired..

all input is much appreciated.

-VHII - The RY will overpower this pickup so badly it's not a good combo!
-Holydiver - Good choice
-Emerald? - Maybe a little on the weak side to pair with a cold sweat.

I would listen to the Steve Stevens clip in the players section and if you feel that it is too vintage sounding, or doesn't have enough beef, then go with the Holydiver.  I've had my RYs for over a year now and they really are a great mixture of vintage/modern tone with a pretty flat EQ (which is a good thing for me).  Holydivers appear to have a slightly more modern tone with less mids but a similar amount of balls!
