I played a gig last night, at a large-ish venue in deepest Sussex. It was a pub restaurant and in deference to the diners we kicked off all nice and twee. After they'd buggered off, the owner ordered us to crank things up and we played at a very high volume. I cranked up the Laney VC30 kicked on the Jekyll & Hyde for the dirty (by my standards) settings or boosted by my trusty DHA WH1 purist for solos, gave my old Strat a pounding-even after having had them for 18 months, I can honestly say that I was blown away yet again and given my limitations as a bass player turned guitarist, I had a great night in terms of playing cos I have been playing a lot of gigs lately and I am starting to sound like a guitarist. I have a gig tomorrow night where I will not be able to play at that volume but I can't wait to play. Get a Start, get some Apaches and wig out. A pointless post for you metal loving gentlemen but for we single coil -well we can rock too you know. I have also switched to 11 gauge strings from 10's -harder work but for me, as a bassist, no too much of an issue and the payoff in thicker tone is well worth it.

I'm very tempted by an Apache neck for my next Strat, I need something warm and smooth. Played a 50's MIM strat thing and it had the neck tone I was after.
Oh and a Sinner in the bridge. I like filth.
Thanks Steve, that's the best kind of review to give, one where you actually get to crank your gear.

Man, i'm pissed off!
I've gotta wait till January to have my Apaches fitted in!
Stupid Custom Shop that didn't had a 250k push-pull !!
-Yeah i'm havin a push-pull installed to have some series/parallel fun :D -
Your post makes me even more impatient...

I know what you mean Mr. 38th. I have been practicing on the 54th anniversary with Stock wound Apaches the last 3 weeks, it has the most beautiful ringing tone, it never fails to amaze. I have other guitars with BKPs, and I have to play them too, a week or two at the time, just to practice, and the hardest thing is to part ways with any of them. I wish I had the time to explore in depth the whole spectrum of sounds. Glad for you Sir... Cheers!!!

I might dig out my Apache'd strat as I just got the Guitar Techniques Rock n' Roll special that just came out - see if I can get the Buddy Holly tone.

That should'nt be a problem.... ;)

Just got in from a great New Years eve gig where I got paid for having a great time and, once again, got a great tone from my Apache laden guitar. I had a customer of the pub ask about my gear/tone tonight-turns out to be another BKP convert with Apaches in his Strat.
-
Great post Steve!
I play my Strat with the Irish Tours a lot and love the tone and dynamics you can get with just a bit of gain.
-
Nice one Steve - must admit that I have neglected my Strat/Apaches of late - after reading your post I'm going to resurrect it.
-
Hmmm, I've been thinking about getting a trio of those for over a year now. Will they also do dirty sounds a la Solo in "Money" or RHCP fuzz tones with my maple neck Tokai Strat?
Or should I maybe get middle/neck Apaches and something hotter for the bridge?
-
They get rude very easily!!!
-
I have my Apache set just waiting to be dropped into a strat! Can't wait to slap those in!
-
Allrighty, now I ordered a set.
Staggered PPs, RWRP
Zinc plated steel base on Bridge
I am getting excited now :P
-
You will not be disappointed Hunter.
-
All this Apache talk is making me want a strat! :P
-
Do it Joe, do it.
-
Haha i can't at the mo, i accidentally purchased something else recently
But i will get one in the future, i'd love a strat.

Now I have my Edwards LP I decided I needed a 'proper' strat, so I am converting my Tokai Super Edition from a humbucker to single coil..and thanks to you guys and a confirmation from Tim, I am also getting an Apache bridge with baseplate. I'm really looking forward to it - since my first Strat copy way back I've never had a single coil in the bridge despite being massive Blackmore/Beck fan... so gonna have fun with a new tonal palette :)
-
Man!.....and this is only the beginning of the year...ahh....the Hunger!!!

Well, can't really call that impulse, if you research a bit in this forum you will find me posting and going on about getting an apache set back in March last year.
So this is a well reflected, thought through acquisition, just this post was the tipping point
And besides that, it's what wisdom of a long and experienced live will teach you: Everyone needs a Strat with Apaches 8)
-
The "Everyone needs a Strat with Apaches" statement is so true and I would only add "Everyone needs a Tele with Country Boys".
-
You guys know your just pure evil right?
*looks at his JV strat with not bad but certainly far from great pickups*

Hunter just keep telling yourself that...
well I have old "I want" backup threads for all BKPs, so when the day comes and I give in to my weakness, I can say it was well thought through

Yeah I know that feeling, first get some BKPs and then go and find the matching guitar to go with 'em ...
Ted, you reached the rare state of "Extreme BKPing"
-
That's what is called " Tailor made "...

My Strat is for sale in seconds out - it has been loaded with both a set of Irish Tours and Apaches, and inmho Apaches were sweeter, better all round versatile pickups. The Irish Tours rocked it out as well mind.
The guitar is for sale with the stock pups back in as this enables the new owner to customise at will if desired. Am open to offers for regular BKP fans
