Title: Where can i find
Post by: Crazy_Joe on December 30, 2007, 04:46:29 PM
A Gibson SG Classic, only places i have seen it is on Ebay secondhand and Musicians Friend (not ordering from there)

There's a Tokai version which much cheaper and has the smaller sg pickguard (which i prefer) but the finish really lets it down.

Looks like this: http://www.gibson.com/products/gibson/sg/SGClassic.html

You might also like the SG Special Reissue with P90's. It's Gibson's guitar of the week number 37.

This guitar should be easier to find than the original Classic that has been discontinued.

There was a time when there were loads of secondhand guitar/amp shops around East Anglia, although you don't seem to get them anymore.  My brother-in-law picked up an Orange GRO100 from a backstreet dealer there about 15 years ago, which I promptly took off his hands for about £300 ( ).

Maybe people are getting wise to selling desirable stuff through traditional outlets, choosing Ebay instead?  I did see a nice Gibson SG in Trevor Durrants shop in Colchester the other week, that was £500.

Not sure where the "bargains" are these days.  But then if I did I'd be completely broke, as opposed to relatively broke...

That's even nicer than the SG Classic as it has the small pickguard, though i can only find it in American stores. :(

Mr Bump, I'll have a look round the local music shops in hope for one, though the danger is that i will find a bargain and buy that instead :P

The Classics come up on ebay now and again. Lovely guitars, there's also the Pete Townshend signature edition. Thats quite nice too.

I think twinfan has the tokai version?!

I must admit I have a soft spot for one of these.

I had one but I totally rebuilt it and pimped the hell out of it:
I called it the painkiller SG - guess which BKPs went into it
It is a bit Judas Priest inspired:

There were two different Pete Townshend signature SGs, the limited edition, relic'd Custom Shop version with a special flightcase:

and the production version:

I have the latter, great guitar but it was quite pricey.  I don't know what they go for on eBay.

Well I don't need it, just a fun little project. AND I have no money. Christmas is when I will have a nice holiday and the money to buy unnecessary guitar gubbins. I can't wait to be a teacher.

The SG Classic was only made for a little while and is no longer available new.

The GOTW series from Gibson was a limited run and very few of any of the guitars made it to the UK.  It was a US thing.

As Ted says, I have a Tokai SG with P90s but mine has a full gloss finish which has faded from white to cream.  Very nice guitars, but they need a pickup upgrade.  The stock Gotoh's are very average, especially the bridge which is very brittle.  They do have a pretty chunky neck though, as do the Gibson SG Classics.  Something to bear in mind......

I'd get the white Tokai and take it down the tanning shop.

tokai 61 reissue

interesting. extremely interesting.

I might have to go to check that guitar out. Assuming they still have it. Haven't been in the emporium for ages, had flus and the like since about october.

:D

dang gas. :)

EDIT: I'm just wondering how often they update that site. I haven't been in for a while but they certainly didn't have any PRSs last time I was in. Haven't had them for a while.

Damn, looks like i have a long Ebay wait in order to get one of these thern, unless i get the Tokai, i'm coming around to the finish a bit now, but Twinfan said the stock pups are a bit sucky, though i would kind of expect that from a Tokai as my Explorer ones were.

The neck was OK, but the bridge pickup was pants.

They're lovely guitars, but you WILL need a pickup upgrade.

Hmmm, looking at the Gibson SG Jr., i would like it but for a 1 pickup SG £599 is a bit steep. Also i might realize i need a neck pickup!

yeah, to be honest that's what'd put me off as well. the pickups in edwardses, while not amazing, are good enough not to have to rush out an immediately swap. I like that because I'm lazy, indecisive and have no money haha. though i'll probably take a run to the BGE soon if I feel a bit better.

gordon smith maybe? their one-pickup models are generally around the £400 mark. nice guitars (at least the ones I've tried).

Wow, that was a classic?! Done a damn good pimping on that haha.

Edit: i was watching Graham Norton the other day (don't ask me why) and The Feeling came on. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=0yorcNWrb9M&feature=related

Guitarist is using the exact same SG as that Tokai, everything is the same, expect the headstock says Gibson i think haha.

I'm close to pulling the trigger here, after looking at the finish for a few days now i've come round to it and it's not bad at all, i'd love to play it first but i can't :(  But i trust Mr Richtone's judgment of the guitar, he told me if i could get my head round the finish then it would be awesome because it's an amazing guitar.

I always wanted a single P90 white SG Junior with the old school pickguard (like the small ones but they go to the neck aswell) but Gordon Smith said they don't do white because it's too hard to apply apparently.

He would say that wouldn't he?  ;)

The only issue I'd have with the one Richtone ar selling is that the body is white but the neck binding is cream/yellow.  It's quite a clash and it would annoy me.

Might not bother you though?
