I had Nath my sprayer and cousin around today because i am guiding him through a guitar build of his own... Whilst he was here i though i would get some clips of him playing some of my guitars. Unfortunately its all done on my digital camera so the sound quality aint the best and it was all a bit 'on the spot' but it might be helpfull to someone.
First up we have my fanned fret LP prototype. Its a mahogany through neck with mahogany and redwood body wings. the pickups are a manhattan in the neck and mule in the bridge. All played straight into my matamp little rock
1st clip, dirty... starting off with the manhattan and switching to the mule after 20 seconds
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=406FLeqR62o
2nd clip, clean.. againstarting off with manhattan for about half the clip
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hACMNZzuclQ
naths only played the fanned fret once before for all those of you wondering how easy they are to play
-
next we have my black limba and maple burl guitar. it has a bolt on maple nect with ziracote fretboard and wilkinson trem. there is also a varitone switch on the guitar at the moment.. Pickups are a crawler in the bridge and as far as i can remember the single coils are mothers milk's
Clip 1. starts with bridge, then flips to middle and back to bridge
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=qZv6iPjVggg
clip 2. little bit more gain and a play with the varitone switch. Mostly done with crawler except last few seconds

Lastly we have 'THE VETERAN'. Korina/idigbo body with spalted maple top and a solid rosewood neck.
the pickups are a wartorn and aged set of miracle men. Naths also using a BYOC tri-booster on (not very) clean boost.
Just one long clip of this one. Nath starts with the bridge pickup, then goes to neck and turns booster off.... gets a bit lazy.... scratches his arse then comes back at the end

Awsome clips, they all sound so good, can't wait to get my hands on one (then it won't sound so good :) )
-
All fantastic clips - obviously the sound quality lacks a bit (a LOT) but I can still hear that there's some real tone going on in the room; I'd love to try one of ur axes. Thanks to Nath too btw!
-
yeah, gonna try and get some proper recordings done at some point... i think nath has an old multitrack machine hanging around somewhere... this is just a taste!!
-
Sound great =)
-
Great clips.
Like the fact the guitars have an individual voice. The Mat sounds great too.

i do try and do different things with my own guitars for the benefit of my own experience.
The black limba one was originally going ot be a superguitar with piezo bridge and it even had a tremsetter to make it hardtail. untill guitar electronics let me down with the graphtech ghost system for a wilkinsonm trem and i never really got on with the tremsetter so removed it. I reckon this guitar fits me best though. I tend to try out new wiring on it occasionally - at the moment it has a varitone switch, last month it had a little distortion circuit. Its an easy guitar to make sound good and i plan on holding onto it for a long time because there are a few errors i would rather not expose to the world!!
I dont really get on with the fanned fret very well. It does play really easily, the fannedness doesnt alter that.. but i dont get on with the sound of it. I know the guitar sounds good but i cant make it sound good... i dont think redwood suits my nature.
I tried to get nath to do all of them straight into the matamp but he insisted on using the BYOC tri-booster with the veteran - the guitar is actually quite versatile but it does inspire a certain kind of playing!!
-
Really great tone from all of those guitars, but very different.
Very much like the Black Limba... That's a very special looking guitar...

i dont like the way it looks, dont think the shape quite worked out right and it has some cosmetic flaws that bug me

Thats why i keep that one for myself - i couldnt cope with it being out in the world showing me up!!

Seriously? Looks hot to me. Reminds me of a bass that I saw years ago, the make escapes me. But a good looking geetar.

this is the original version i did with that shape.... i think it worls a hell of a lot better with pointy horns, in fact i was just lying in the bath considering doing a new one with a walnut and flamed maple body
(http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e31/WezV/wv15.jpg)

Yeah, I can see that - I think that rounding off the horn makes the guitar less symetrical, in it's asymetrical way... I do like the pointy one - looks like Tony Iommi might have tripped over and squashed his SG on stage.
As cool as your guitars are Wez, you should probably not be dreaming about them in the bath. That's bordering on the obsessive...

think i am at the stage past obsessive now - anyway, you havnt see the walnut and maple i was thinking about using!!!
Truth is it might not happen, i dream up a few new guitars a day and there just aint enough time!!
-
That sounds awesome Wez!

Kinda reminds me of the body shape I designed ages ago. I just traced around my les paul and strat then combined them sort of together, and made the horns a bit pointier :)

Fancy making me one? :P I've lost the original sketch though which was annoying as it was full size so basically a template, all I have is that photo.
-
thats a very nice design. Looks like it should exist all ready - more so than mine i would say.
hey, if you ever want it converting to real 3D woody goodness let me know  Fancy it doing in walnut and flamed maple!!
-
All sounds great Wez, and dibs to Nath!
Fine, fine guitars they look....

That design especially the scratch plate looks v familiar me thinks. Nice though! Great if you could re do it in you own colours etc.
Nice clips btw Wezv
-
thats the best thing about starting with a large plank of wood - ya can make it any damn colour/size/shape you want.
I must admit it reminded me of mira but the pointier horns help distinguish it quite nicely

I really like the points being orientated differently and the way you sized them differently, giving it more a teethy feel then a clawlike feel like most SG types have. Maybe if you perfect the curves of the body you can get a bit more 'horror' feel from this design, shaping it more like the profile od a scull or something in that general direction. Or maybe a nose kind of bump and cavity at the base of the top 'tooth' maybe?
Anyway its a very nice one Wez, should keep the design in your portfolio IMO.

Will do :D I was gonna have a go at making it myself ages ago but realised I dont have any of the tools required
Oh and I designed it before the Mira was released :P
edit - had a go at filling in the design with kisekae wood grain and pickups. Looks allright actually :) Think I'd want a stop tail though

Sorry for the really blurry cr@p clone stamping
-
i think the scratchplate suited it a lot, but maybe with sg style bevels over the top half.... i guess thats describing the mira again but there are many ways to differentiate these things
anyway - majorly of topic.. but it only takes the meerest mention of a guitar design to set my mind into overdrive
-
Hm I didnt like such a huge pickguard on something which would be natural wood. Something like an SG Jr looks a bit better I think. Again, apologies for the fairly poor photoshopping but it gives an idea.
