Title: Glandular Fever
Post by: Woogie on January 03, 2008, 11:57:31 AM
Has anyone else got it? I just got diagnosed with it (blood test) and was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice.

Cheers

- Hot drinks can relieve the sore throat.

- Drink plenty of fluids when you run a fever.

- Rest when you are tired or are running a fever.

- Resume physical activities slowly.

- Wait at least four weeks before resuming activities involving heavy physical strain.

- It is sensible to avoid drinking alcohol for six weeks while recovering from glandular fever.

You can treat the symptoms of fever and pain with pain killers (analgesics) such as paracetamol or non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen or aspirin (16+ only). You will probably need more rest and sleep than usual for a prolonged period.

Drink plenty of fluids, even if you are off your food.

It is wise not to rush back to full activity too soon, and to build up slowly.

Follow this advice, you'll not go wrong :)

It's really important to not try and do things until you are ready- you'll wear yourself out an it'll take longer to recover.

About 4 years or so ago, i had a really bad case of it, and didn't get over it fully for over a year and a half! Normally you'll be over it in a few weeks, but just take it easy :)

+100 in the avoiding alcohol as Glandular Fever plays havoc with your liver in particular.

I was stuck in the house for about 7 weeks with it way back in 1983 and it's not something I would ever want to repeat, and it was over a year before I got back to what passes for normal. About 2 weeks after getting freed from quarrentine in the house I had a pint (at my cousins wedding reception) and was sick for about 3 days (I wasn't the food as I still wasn't eating)

Oh yeah keep away from anybody who is ill with anything else as it firstly it's easy to pass on glandular fever, secondly your body is hugely weakened (for ages).

Keep warm, drink lots of fluids and concentrate on getting better

The advise that I got (and helped) was to drink lots of water.

In general, to get fever down, I have good experience with a (cold) wet towel around one leg while sleeping. It creates an asymetric "cooling cycle" which helps drive the heat out of the body.

Sounds a bit funny but does really help in my opinion.

lots of rest.... you are going to feel the effects of this for a long time i'm afraid - so like everyone says... dont rush it!!

Have you done your GCSE's yet?  if you are year 11 its really not the best time.  but dont be disheartened - my best mate had it during his a'levels and it really messed up his achievement.. but he carried on and now he works in biomedical research at Oxford Uni and i have to call him doctor.  so although it seemed like the worst thing ever at the time it wasnt that big a deal in the long run!!

my best mate, brother and girlfiend have all been really bad with it  but i never have.  Apparently my mother had it when she was preggers with me so thats probably why

i was lucky... i got it when i was really young (like 5). Apparently it's worse the older you get it (and you can't get it twice)... from what I can remember, i just felt really tired for about 2 weeks, but as you're 16 it'll doubtless take longer than that.

Just take it very easy, I guess. :)

bear in mind I'm not a doctor.

I'm told I had it when I was 10, and it affected my kidneys. Days and days of having to pee into a container so Mum could see how much I'd passed...
