Just having this guitar resprayed black at the moment

The redness of the paduak was great whilst it lasted but it did fade to a brown and i felt like giving it a revamp
It used to have kent armstong high output humuckers which suited it well but they wont be going back in it since i prefer to use BKP's now a days
tonally paduak is similar to maple with more mids
I am after something more capable of cleans than the pickups i used before but still suits the mapleyness of the paduak.
It has an ebony fretboard as well

Is padauk heavy?
I haven't seen many padauk wood guitars, do people just use maple instead of it?

it is quite heavy, but this particular guitar aint too bad at all weight wise - the small body shape helps. Maple is easier to get hold of is all. I generally (note the 'generally' - occasionaly i get nicely surprised) dont like the sound of solid maple guitars but paduak seems better to me

I do know maple, its middy, so its LOUD, clear and has moderate resonance/harmonic properties. If padauk is lighter the resonance would be somewhat better, but still have the edgy maple sound IMO.
I LOVE alot of maple in my guitars, but i like it best in the LP customs with maple neck i have.
I personally think its crytical to have enough highs in this kind of guitar, so ideally i would pick an alnico V bar pickups. Then you could choose to put a rather dark sounding pickup in to negate the maple a bit, personally i think this just gives a very bland/generic 'cheapo' guitarsound which is very undesireable. Keep in mind most cheapo guitars do the same by compensating very rich sounding pickups on a DEAD sounding plank.
I think one should get the most out of the acoustic guitar sound, with a maple like sound i would say a very clear sounding pickup with plenty of highs and preferably tight and rich bottom end. The mules in my maple neck LP custom are perfect in the mids but a bit skinny in the lows and highs, even with the big mahagony/maple body. Probably a riffraff, or maybe a VHII would be better suited. Maybe even stormy mondays depending on the actual tone of the guitar.
Probably if you would describe the sound of the guitar better more people would respond, i hope this comment is in any way usefull to you though.

Holydiver? Slightly dark with an awesome clean tone, and distorted it sounds like wild horses fighting hungry lions. And the lions being eaten.

tbh i am not always the best person at describing sounds and this wood combo is a bit out of character for my builds - but sometimes you just have to build them to try it out and not worry about it too much!!
I am personally not a fan of all maple guitars, the paduak seems a better balance. A little heavy on the top end but never so much that it sounded bad . clear and articulate but still with some warmth
i will probably give the riff raffs a miss because it looks like i am using them on another build and i am still trying to get through more of BKP's range. VHII's might be worth a shot though.. not after anything with crazy high output for this
this guitar been out of action for quite a while now but it used to be my main guitar so i guess i must have liked the sound
i know this was a difficult one for anyone to answer but you never know!!

I think VHII's might be a nice set, another set you might want to think about are the Abraxas. Not many people seem to use them, but they have a great old rock sound (not like Santana's new stuff).

If it is more peaking on the top end then on the mids i would also rather try something else. Probably i would try Emeralds then, or Abraxas like Philking suggested. VHII's might be too trebly in your guitar i think. Kind of hard choise actually, i think the Abraxas signature would fit the apearance of your guitar in black best.

I have a Paduak Washburn N4 with a ebony fretboard and the Holydiver sounds great in it. I dare say it's my best sounding guitar.

I going to be building a guitar out of Padauk very soon (Bubinga neck) but it will be single coil, so would be interested if any one hand any ideas on single coils for it.
WezV hope you don't mind me asking here, but my question fitted well with this thread
