Title: soundcards for recording?
Post by: goddamn electric on January 03, 2008, 11:31:49 PM
can anyone recommend a computer soundcard for music recording? basically i just need something that will sort out the latency issue for my midi keyboard and my microcube, mic etc. preferably a external usb card. im not looking for an all singing all dancing one, just a fairly cheap one which will sort out the real time latency problem. im not sure if an audio interface or an actual soundcard is the best way to go. the midi keyboard is USB based and doesnt have a proper midi link if that helps the decision at all?

Cheers.

Umm, just off the top of my head;

Check out the M-Audio site. They have good stuff at competitive prices, and I seem to recall some firewire sound cards they have that are pretty damn secksay...

To be honest, the best way of improving latency is going for a full PCI solution rather than using an external Firewire or USB interface - PCI or PIC2 will always be faster, as a rule of thumb.

You can always buy PCI with a decent breakout box for access and usability.

Mark.

Yup a modern PCI device is the best for latency but the firewire models out there are nearly as good.

I get latencies of 3.something ms in and 2.4ms out on my emu 1616m

I have a Lin6 Toneport GX and allthough latency should not be an issue i do seem to have it when recording, probably due to heavy cpu usage. I do have a cr@ppy amd 3200 cpu so probably this will improve with a better cpu, still im sure ill be better off investing in a stand-alone recording device. For the usual CD quality recordings a USB device like the toneport is fine, not latency issues so far.

The M-Audio Audiophile 2496 PCI card would be a superb choice for a quality, budget recording soundcard.  I have used one for quite a while. I am very impressed with it.
