Title: Hi Guys, more advice on what to go for
Post by: tinribs on January 09, 2008, 06:21:48 PM
Hi Guys, my first post.
I'm not a serious player but really enjoy playing every now and again.
I have an old 80's charvel and a cheap jackson performer. I have a Laney VH100R and a Marshall Slash 4 x 12 slanted cab - (bit loud for the flat I live in) so most of the time use a Roland cube 30 when the other half is in.

My question is - I'm looking to change the bridge humbucker on my performer, I love the idea of the VHII for the brown sound but I'd like something thats also going to give me an 80's white lion / Tesla maybe even Jake E Lee sort of sound.

From the reading I've done so far, its looks like the VHII might just do the job, or maybe the nailbomber.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I think the VHII sounds pretty much perfect for what you described.
If you want higher output, maybe it's worth considering a Holy Diver. I hear it's very good for those 80s hard rock/metal sounds.

There are far more knowledgeable people on here than I however, so wait and see what others say. Also, I'd highly recommend emailing Tim with what you're looking for in as much detail as you can. I've never heard of any instance where his suggestion hasn't been bang-on.

Good luck finding your tone!

My gut reaction is to say Holy Diver, so I'm gonna say just that:

HOLY DIVER

... and if it's not just a bad bout of gas in his gut, then he's probably right   8)

I know, I used to play quite a bit. Loved the sound of it, bought it about 6 years ago, was going to buy a marshall, only ever had marshalls, but the bloke told me to try the laney and i loved it, prefered it plugged into the marshall cab, the slash cab is loaded with celestion greenbacks.

Then i moved into a flat, I found that the laney needed quite a bit of cranking to sound the way i liked it and was too loud for the flat, although I've never had it past number 6, man that was loud.
I've not really got room for it either and the misses didn't like the amp in the living room, so it lives round my parents house now. One day I'll get a biiger house!

Hi Guys,
So I've decided to go for a holy Diver in the Bridge. I dont use the neck humbucker all that much, but if I was to change it, what would you guys recomend? would the abraxas sound interesting in the neck position?

thanks

Yes it would. But be prepared for a huge mid-clunk in the middle position.

The clips I've heard of the Mule neck all sound excellent.

Nice one mate. I'm sure you'll be awe-struck when you've got them in!

I assume you mean that you'll be ordering a neck pickup later?

If you make the move, you will use your neck pick up! Trust me. There is nothing less inspiring than a bad neck pup. But a nice will make you discover the joy of the neck pup.

In the case of the 490R it was even just a question swapping mag to have a glimps of what I was missing... I can't imagine yet what I will get from the neck position now that I have a MQ in there... The SD '59 in the Epi was already real nice.

Go on tinribs, you DO want a new neck pup!
