So i just joined a new band as the lead, but my wah is terrible. I have the cheap plain old crybaby, and when fully depressed i feel like my ears are being shredded by treble.
Are there any mellower wahs out there? For budget it would be best if under 200$, and I'd like true bypass, but as long as theres the right size switch for me to install a dpdt.
-
why dont you just shift the range of the wah - by unhooking the rack and pinion mechanism and rotating the pot a bit before putting the rack back in place - then it wont run so trebly at full tilt
-
ooh thats a good idea.
question though, right now the tone is kinda like oooooowwweeeeeeee and im lookin for more of an oooowwwaaahhhhhhh. Will rotating it change this? or is it more about the circuit.
-
As I understand your oooooings and aaaaaaahings, yes that should do it.
However If what youre after is a broader wah sound, that wont do it.
But felines suggestion is the best thing to try to begin with. You can change the sound of a wah A LOT changing the range.

okay, i'm back, and i've finally tried my wah with my marshall. Yeha, my previous opinion was based on use with a Spider >_<
anyways, this thing has virtually no sweep, infact i can barely even hear a difference.
I'm kinda lookin for a sweep like in the Atomic Bitchwax's song Marching on the Skulls of the Dead. I tried to do that last wah riff in the last 2 seconds in the song, and well... nothing really happens :(
anybody know a wah that can do it? if you need a clip i can upload the segmet of the song im lookin for

Get an RMC or Fulltone, they are the best Wahs I know of, might be a bit over the 200 but not much.

I have a Dunlop "Cry Baby"and a VOX (V847 or something?) and i simply don't use them anymore..Loose too much tone and really noisy. The VOX wah is the kind of sound i like but, like i said,it's noisy and it "eat"my tone. It's the stock one so,it's not true bypass.I wanted to mod it but it was more expensive to mod it + shipping to the US than to buy a new one modded (Garmopad)...I'm still looking to find a solution myself,so i can't help you :( but you're not alone !

I had the same problem with my Dunlop, so I got a Teese Wizard Wah. It's a great Wah as it works great for heavier/ dirty sounds too. But one of the guys on the S.D forum suggested an Area51 drop in kit, basically you buy a complete board and put it in your existing Dunlop casing. This Wah is now superb, it's a vintage Italian Wah sound... excellent IMO. If I had known about this first I would have just got the Area51 kit. As it is I now have 2 great but differently voiced Wahs! Both are true bypass. If you want a new Wah, then I don't think you can get any better than RMC pedals but they're not cheap! Anyway, check out ....... www.area51tubeaudiodesigns.com
All the best.

i have modded a couple of basic crybabys and vox's wiht some of the things on this site
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/s.castledine/greenfuz/wah.html
the vocal and sweep mods are particular favorites
been very happy with the result -much more user friendly

I paid £200 including delivery, for an RMC3 wha, I haven't heard a better sweep range as yet. Ask mr Teese on his website, and he'll point you out to an authorised dealer.

dunlop do a few true bypass wahs... the 535q is i think, the dime wah and the zakk wah as far as i know are all true bypass.. Morley do a few and their is of course the ibanez weeping deamon
-
and the zakk wah
Thats a bit of a shocker, I didn't think he turned it off...
I have the same wah as you, and I can see your problem, do you find the sweep itself isn't smooth ? some points have a quick wah action, other points you have to move it loads to get the slightest effect...
If there is a way to fix that I wouldn't mind knowing, that factor and Zakk have kind of put me off it for a bit

the sweep is smooth, its just too small, and i can barely hear it.
I have a gift certificate for a local music store, and i was just guna trade my heap in for something better... i'm not in the mood for spending money that i can spend on other things right now. I think i might just end up going in and trying everything they have on the floor.

try a 353Q, lots of sweep there and plenty of tweaking can be done, its not hard to get close to any wah sound with it
