Hi All,
I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction to get a sound close to that of the deftones for albums such as Around the Fur.
I have a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe with a Gibson SG Standard.
What pickups, pedals, amp setting and guitar tuning would you recommend?
I know he plays with Marshall preamps a 7-string Fender that has .011-.059 strings and EMG-707-85s pickups.
I do not have the money to buy all new amps and guitars, but I want to get close not exact. thanks

he uses a pod xt pro live now, and i hear he has started in the studio.
-
and i'm bill s preston esq!
He now uses a 7 string baritone(!) so you'll be needing to downtune a shite load!!
Get a cheap baritone off ebay (£200 for a BC rich Bich that tunes A to A) then you'll be on the right track.. without the drop tuning you wont really get 'the' sound your after :/
-
Damn.
I really dont want to buy another guitar...lol I got too many as it is..lol
Dropping down to C on my SG and putting in a Warpig bridge wont get me close?
-
not a big deftones fan but i know itd get you firmly into proper growly\nu metal mode like that!!
In flames play in C, as do Killswitch Engage and loads of others...
Itd deffo get you close.. a 7 string is down to B, and 7 baritone is down to like A or lower(?)!!!

Depends what Deftones era you are after. The first album is in standard half a step down i believe. Then the 2nd album was down on DADGBE half a step down as the next with the newest deftones album being on songs DADGBE half a step down as well as ADADGBE 3 and half steps down! as well as BEADGBE 3 and half steps down!
It is lower then Meshuggah. btw, those tunings are produced by using a harmonizer and bring it down by that much.
So if you are going after the first deftones album i would say warpigs as with around the fur. On White Pony, i think his cleans got a lot nicer, as well as his distortion being a lot more open i would go for Nailbombs and same for the new album.
Btw to my knowledge his 7's are baritones, but not all and he generally plays 24.75 in scale length ESPs.

Matamp sold them some amps once....

Thanks Guys,
I got the guitar and pickups down. Any advice on the pedal? I got the fender Hot Rod deluxe and as you know its not known for its great distortion. I was thinking of getting my Boss Metal zone modded. Do you think it could drive my amp into this realm?
Thanks again. I'm glad I'm not getting laughed at by liking a nu-metal band...lol

maybe think about buying a pod xt. you would get close to his sounds.

Cool, thanks
Is the only real differnce with the POD XT and POD XT PRO is that the pro is rack mountable?

And it has more in/out connections.

I was looking @ the Line 6 PODxt Live. Does anyone have this unit? Being that BKP is known for their awesome tone and character. Would this Live pedal just destroy that sound or will it be okay?
-
I have a PodXT which is the same thing but in a kidney bean instead of a floor board, I certainly noticed a change in tone (for the better) when changing pickups.
-
Sounds good,
Would you recommend getting a true bypass pedal to use with it when the pedal is off or does it not suck that much tone when off?
-
Umm, I dunno, I don't have any other amps so I don't know what happens whe it is off :?
