I always thought that The Darkness would be good when they got rid of the hideous vocals. And now they have!
It sounds really good, it's got a nice classic rock vibe to it now, it has a hint of AC/DC in the sound imo.
-
Yeah, I fancy checking out the album....
-
Sound good! Anyone heard of the band Airbourne? They're another classic rock style band that sound awesome.

Yep, me and Martin are off to see them on the 8th :D
-
Doesn't Dan Hawkins play BKP??
Do you reckon he uses some on those tracks??
-
i liked justin's lead playing... :(
-
Me likey!
-
I always liked The Darkness, they were gimmicky and cliché but so what? I'll have to check it out when I'm at home.
Airbourne can suck it, I heard a song (I think it was them anyway) and it's AC/DC. It doesn't "sound like" them, it's a straight rip-off.

Nope. I believe the first album is all stock Gibson LPs through a THD UniValve. Dan got his Cold Sweats later.
-
Just had a quick listen, I like them two samples.
-
There's alot of AC/DC and DIO influences. Classic hard rock. I like! \M/

Same Dave, i loved his solos way more than Dan's solos, but i just couldn't treat them as a normal band with the vocals.
-
The Stone Gods stuff sounds OK, but is it good enough to really make an impact? I can't help feeling Dan & co have had their 15 minutes and it's not going to happen again.
As for Airbourne, they're so AC/DC - it's right on the knife-edge between "influenced by" and "tribute band". But then I guess there's room for two soundalike bands in the world. Well, three - let's not forget Rhino Bucket. And (forgive me) those Airbourne songs are better than anything AC/DC have done for a couple of decades.
-
Here is another great Aussie band I have recently been introduced to
http://www.myspace.com/tonkrocks
Pretty similar as well...
Looks like the NWOBHM is still alive and well in Australia
-
I think I agree with Philly, I don't think that they are going to get the same level of success that The Darkness ever had, but they might get a lot more underground kudios for what they do
-
Here's another cool band... http://www.myspace.com/blackmountain

Bloody hell, I'm going to have to buy that.

+1 - when I first heard this on MTV thought it was AC/DC before I looked up.

Snap, me and my girlfriend were convinced it was a new AC/DC single. It's not even funny how bad they're ripping them off.
-
Like it or not, Justin was the Darkness. I was a big fan, Dans stuff sounds pretty cool but it doesnt have the impact that The Darkness did when they first came on the scene, I remeber when I first heard The Darkness on Jo Whiley??(spelling) It just made me smile. :D :D
-
Meh, its not the same when Justin was in it. His over the top attitude is what made the band. His leads were brilliant too...
you might want to check out a band called The Answer. Classic rock-esc Irish band

Not sure why it's a bad thing when one band sounds like another.
After all there must be/have been millions of bands, and it's a fair bet they aren't all unique.
Why not decide whether or not you like the music, rather than analysing the influences and roots of it?
In the case of Airbourne, as a keen AC/DC fan, I can't wait to see them. After all, when will AC/DC next be touring?
If and when they do, they won't be playing small venues, and let's be honest, they don't have the energy they used to.
Remember, the constant quest for originality is doomed to failure in such a simple art form as rock and roll. Hence the constant stream of "latest new band" shitee. To paraphrase, "**** originality, let's rock!"

I agree that there are lots of bands, in various genres, who sound broadly similar to each other. Just about every metal band has a bit of Sabbath influence, and all pop-punk bands sound exactly like Green Day. There are only so many riffs to go round.
AC/DC's sound is still (IMO) very distinctive, but they've inspired their fair share of other bands (Rose Tattoo, Starfighters and Screaming Jets spring to mind, probably lots more). But there's a difference between inspiration and imitation (remember Kingdom Come?). Airbourne and Rhino Bucket sound exactly like AC/DC. The second guitarist in RB even used to play a Gretsch like Malcolm's. It's not as if these bands started independently and just happened to end up sounding the same. They're AC/DC copyists, pure and simple.
Which isn't to say they aren't any good. I'd be happy to see them, but I'd regard them in the same way as a good tribute band.

You think too much!
If you were doing Danni, you're the sort who'd be thinking "Yeah, but it's not Kylie is it?"
We can debate all day how much Airbourne are AC/DC copyists (I don't think they are particularly, and the more you listen, the less the sound the same) but in fact IT DOESN'T MATTER!
Do you enjoy it, yes or no? If yes, turn brain off and get off on the SOUNDS.
Leave all that other cr@p to Jazz Club.
It's only rock'n'roll.....
-
You think too much!
Maybe (in fact almost certainly). But I didn't need to do any thinking on this one, it was right there in front of me. Like an elephant in the room.

No, I'd be thinking of Charlize Theron to try and maintain... interest.

That being the case, carpe diem and enjoy, or find something else that does ring your bell. My point is, does it matter? To me, no. To you it seems to. We'll agree to differ.
There's been 50 years or so of rock'n'roll. Those seeking originality over quality will find things increasingly difficult in years to come.

Kind of missing the point, as you know! :)
Anyway, Charlize Theron smokes, minger.
-
We'll agree to differ.
And on that, I'll agree. :)
Anyway, Charlize Theron smokes
I didn't know that. But realistically, her ashtray breath is a problem I'm never likely to have to deal with. Unless she hangs around in unsavoury parts of South London and has a thing about shortarsed, slightly paunchy middle-aged Welsh blokes.
-

As she's on the knock back from me (the smoking thing :? ) you never know.
-
I bloody loved the darkness. Though, in their attempt to be a real 80s band Justin Hawkins jumped the gun a bit and got the smack habit too early!
I am hoping for a reunion =[
-
Haha, nah, Justin said he'd never be part of that again because he has an addictive personality and he knows that he'll fall back into it.
The Darkness, live, were brilliant... the ONLY problem I had was at Reading (2004 I think) when they were headliners and had The Offspring on before them and they had equal sets. This was The Darkness, with one album, playing an equal sized set as The Offspring, legends, with 8 albums...
-
Offspring? Legends? That's pushing it a bit ;)
-
The Offspring?
I saw them at MK Bowl, first band on supporting Megadeth, QOTSA and AC/DC.
Oh Dear.......
