Well, according to Rolling Stone anyway..................these really are useless articles- please discuss!
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5937559/the_100_greatest_guitarists_of_all_time
-
I think the people who made this list up must be out of their faces on some illegal substance.
For example ...
Number 2 - Duane Allman
Number 82 - Dave Gilmour
Also ... Gary Moore is at number ... um ... oops he isn't on the list
EVH at number 70?
This has to be the worst list I've seen of this type, in a long time.
-
Ha Ha Keith richards can obviously show EVH a trick or to.
Obviously Carlos santana should have played his solo's more in the style of the Kurt Cobain.
What a terrible list, not that they are personal favourites but where the hell is Steve Vai or Satch?
Obviously they just missed out to that guy from the ramones who can play both root 6 AND 5 barre chords
-
these really are useless articles
Yep, that list is indeed useless - for more reasons than I can count, let alone be bothered to list
please discuss!
No need - you already summed it up nicely :)
-
That nearly gave me an anuerysm.

Yeah, I know, just wanted to wind everyone up as much I was!
-
it seems like a completely random list of guitarists, irrespective of skill, percieved "coolness", innovation or any other logical or coherent criteria.
i think the likes of Joan Jett and Ron Asheton would be quite bewildered to find themselves on such a list! someone googled "guitar player" and wrote down the first 100 names. the only one they recognised was Hendrix, so they put him at 1.
-
There is one sole logical aspect to these things. One overriding rule.
Hendrix wins.
Other than that its randomly selected and randomly ordered, I'm certain. Its the only possible explanation.
And I dont even agree that hendrix wins. He just always does.
-
c--k.
-
Useless list. I don't think they tried to put in order 'best-ness', though.
And why would they? There's no such thing as a best guitarist. All those guys are experts in their own style. Shure Eddie and Jimi are great but Les Paul would wipe the floor with them both if it came to playing jazz.
And why the hell isn't Brian Setzer on that list? And where's Billy Gibbons? Even Hendrix himself said Billy was the greatest guitarist ever. And why isn't Malcolm Young on that list while Keith Richards is?
-
Can't see Rolling Stone in work ($%ing useless county council) but where's Buckethead on that list?
-
Can't see Rolling Stone in work (#$%!& useless county council) but where's Buckethead on that list?
Not on there.

Like Vai, satch, paco de lucia, al dimeola, tommy emanuel and many others
Nowhere.

I dont think you can really mean that!
Yes Hendrix will always stand out cause he did things on a guitar that nobody else had done before; much like chuck berry etc.
Its all about standing on the shoulders of giants!
Personally i think its impossible to say any one guitarist is the best or was the best - you cant really compare them - only by their influence on popular guitar (which is whay you could argue i gues sthat Keith richards was more influential than steve vai who just ripped other people off - but faster)
These lists are put togther soley to sell magasines, and court controversly, so the likes of us can say no way man slash is better than EVH, etc etc
-
I do mean it.
But now I have an identity crisis.....come to think of it, I've never seen me and Mr Ed in the same place....... :?
-
Not on there.
Like Vai, satch, paco de lucia, al dimeola, tommy emanuel and many others
Nowhere.
Well, in that case, said list is null, void and utterly shitee. Buckethead is the God of guitar wizardry.
I dont think you can really mean that!
OI!! I NEVER SAID THAT!! :o
-
My apologies!
Somehow I managed to quote the wrong person
-
At least Blackmore's on there, so I'm happy.
But seriously, all these lists are bollocks, they're completely meaningless. What does "greatest" mean anyway? Influence, technical ability, innovation, commercial success, all-around coolness?
It's like when they have the various lists of "100 Greatest Films". One list will be selected by heads-up-their-own-arses critics and it'll be the same things they've picked every year for decades, another will be picked by idiot members of the general public and contain nothing older than Titanic.
-
What a stupied list. No logic whatsoever. I thought it might be a "Most influential" type list with Allman and Cobain up there, but Kirk Hammet at number 11??????
Load of sloblocks
-
I'd say this is a "Most overrated guitarists of all time" list, but I love Hendrix too much to say that. Otherwise, that's what it would be if Clapton was number one.
-
I'd rather see a list of the best 100 biscuits of all time. I think a lot can be said for McVities Digestives, you can keep Garibaldi's in my view.

Army ration fruit biscs are good, but when it comes to digestives, tesco value are just as good. Nothing beats a good hobnob though :D
Jack white though... seriously. Why so near the top? I think they just make that list to appeal to the masses and whats hip with the time
-
No Jake? Oh this isn't the most underrated list!
-
I think the real stumper is Kurt Cobain at number 12. Where the hell is Johnny Winters??
-

Got to be plain chocolate digestives- silly caramel stuff in the middle is too complex, the regular digestive too plain.
In essence, I like my biscuits like I like my guitarists: If you consider the blues (muddy waters) to be the bog-standard digestive biccy, then I enjoy a little embellishment on top (hendrix, AC/DC), but not too much (YJM).
see how I kept on topic there?
PS. Other than the top spot, that whole list is cr@p-ola
I love the beatles, but George Harrison (26) a better guitarist than Pete Townshend(50) or Angus Young(96!!!)?
-
These things are a total waste of everyone's afternoon, they really are. Even if they aren't about technical or musical skill, I don't even think they could claim it's about influence either. If it were, how could they justify Jack White rating higher than, say, Tony Iommi?
Anyway, the whole thing means dick all to me, because Joe Satriani isn't on it, and if it weren't for him, I'd never have picked the instrument up in the first place.

Same here.
But no Jason Becker, no Di Meola, nothing.
It's a $%ing joke.
-
i cant believe friedman and gilbert arent on there
-
What the $%????
No Nuno, Jason Becker and EVH at 70?
Idiots.
-

Everything anyone ever did on a guitar, Bo Diddley did it first.
-
I totally agree that there's no real value in these polls but does anyone know who came up with the list? Was it a quick vote in the Rolling Stone office or was there a vote with their readers, or by musicians?
Also, it's a pleasant surprise to see Richard Thompson in the top 20. I saw him do a solo acoustic gig last summer and he was phenominal!
-
I'd hate to be the trees that got chopped down to make the paper on which to print such a load of garbage.
-
I do like custard creams and those tins of Fox's favourites are quite nice.

Agreed, Fox's never seem to put a foot wrong in the biscuit stakes.

All Rolling Stones lists are a pile of cr@p.
