So ESP have released some eight strings Ibanez have one and have released another 7 this year. however i seem to hear from all the local shops that theres no demand for 7 string or 8 strings anymore.
What is everyones opinion on 7's first?
And what do you all think about 8's?
Jus' wandering because i love playing my seven string, its a reasonable priced Schecter and im looking to upgrade probably to an Ibanez, but it seems that they arent going to last....
Do the shop keepers really know what they're on about??

My opinion of 8s I cant give you. Aint got one. Meshuggah are the only people I know that play them and I havent played any.
My opinion of 7s is in 2 parts:
1: Guys like Chris broderick, Jeff Loomis, Trey Azagthoth and John Petrucci show us that they arent just a tool of nu metal. Great music can be written on them that cant be played on a 6 string.
2: 1 of my electrics (I have 8 ) is a 7. I havent found anything to do on it bar one pretty cool chord that I cant do on my (mostly heavily dtuned) 6 strings.
n.b. FYI the 7 string started as a classical instrument about 100 years ago, and was ressirected by the jazz crowd before metallers. Maybe they could show us a thing or two!

I'd love to own a seven string some day.
It's gives a whole new level of creativity. Not that I'm creative but I'm sure someone out there has done something which I think rocks.
The real question for me really is which brand.
Ibanez/ESP(and LTD)/etc.

trust me, the 7 string demand is there. It's just the shops don't bother stocking them so us 7 string guys have to result to ebay alot of the time. Shops only really carry Ibanez 7 strings, not everyone wants an Ibanez with a thin neck and floyd rose. If they had more variety of 7's the shop guys would see the demand.

I became a 7-string addict when I bought mine. Now my Les Paul feels incomplete. It has a big fat 50s neck but it feels tiny in my hands when I'm used to spanish guitars and 7 strings. I was really lucky to find a 7-string what wasn't your usual robot-machine-methulll-über-shreddy-whammy-superstrat, but something more "me" (read: les paul-like). I can live with the flaws in blanace and playability to have that "real-tone"(got Mules in it even. I wouldn't be surprised if they are the only set of 7-legged Mules), but if I can ever afford a custom guitar, I'm getting a 7-string LPDC. I haven't ever seen that either, heh.
To me, the 7th string is very usuable. A simple thing like extending a barre chord with a low 5th can add a lot to the expression of the chord. Then there's the big fat B -> D# chords that are suddenly possible.
For soloing, I also prefer 7-stringed guitars over drop tunings. The notes are still "where they are suposed to be" if you know what I mean, so it's as easy to improvise as on a standard tuned 6-string. And you can do bigger sweeps and runs without having to move as much horisontally, aswell as wider intervalic string skipping licks. Yes, right now it sounds like I'm just describing wankage but when you're used to the technical advntages, the creative aspect comes easier.
8-strings though I have no experince with, but I'm a big Meshuggah fan so I'll probably end up giving in someday and buying one. Those Blackmachines look incredible, though not my style.

I bet a 7-string SG would be awesome. I'm waiting till demand drops to rock bottom on 7-stringers then I'll get one cheap (yeah, I'm a tightarse)

Ditch the 707s and that's yummy.

I have three main guitars.
Epiphone sg
Peavey v type
And a Schecter Damien 7
I like them all for different reasons and i think i'de like to get a seven string sg with the miracle men sound that my peavey has. That would probably be my No.1 ideal guitar.
But maybe even in an 8 string.
But then no Miracle Man damn!!

BKP is gonna release 8-string pickups soon, you just wait. There was a topic about it awhile back.

Regarding 7's,I love em!! Have a Stagemaster 7 with a Warpig in t' bridge. Play it most of the time, though it's still not the easiest thing to play. Thanks to Tim it does sound good tho.
With 8's, the only ones I have tried are Doug's* prototype 8, and the prototype 884 and the finshed F8. Simply stunning, great tone and playability. Nobody (me included) really needs an 8, but its huge fun!!! Closest analogy I can think of is it's like a Golf VR6. Nobody needs that much grunt in something that small but god is it fun!!! that low F# is good for scaring small children and animals also............

What do you guys think about rusty cooley's dean sig 7?
-
Also, seven string acoustics are common in Russia for folk/bard music.
I have a hella time trying to convince Russian people that a true classical/Spanish guitar does not typically have seven strings.

Rather Rubbish, that guy makes Michael Angelo look tasteful. (The guitarist that is!)

but does that translate to his guitar is what I wanna know. :)

I think it could be very nice if it wasnt for all the graphics and inlays. Reminded me a lil' of the Giger RG. i think Dean are probably amongs the best for 7's if only they made more. the vendetta 1.7 or something. why dont they make a good one?

I wanted a 7-string because I am not a fan of detuning a normal 6-string to abyssal lows... looses the feeling, sound, just not what it was made for.
But the 7-string did not fit my hand, the string spacing is too close. I discovered, that scale length matters less to my hands than the amount of strings, lol, so instead I got a baritone guitar and I am very happy with it. It goes "boom" when i hit the strings and just works great on those low notes.
