Title: Overdrive Heven?
Post by: kernowmetal on January 26, 2008, 01:23:25 PM
Hi, Im toying with the idea of getting an ada mp 1 to plug in to the fx loop of my marshall jcm 900, my sound at the moment isnt what i want, im looking for those epic 80's lead tones (alex skolnick etc) and in not sure wether to save up for the Voodoo Deluxe Modified ada mp1 (approx £330) or to just sell my 900 and try something different like a 5150 etc? I dont have much money atm so anything expensive or botique is out of the question unfortunatly! Any help will be gratefully accepted, many thanks!

The 80's lead kind of tone is from studio grade compression/sustain processing and NOT from high gain levels. Offcourse more gain will increase sustain but you wont ever get the tone right that way.

What you can try, is setting your 900 at the smoothest gain tone in there and put a good compressor/sustainer pedal in front, maybe you need to boost the input highs a bit with an overdrive pedal but you will at least get to play a decent 'stage' lead sound.

For reference you can check on van Halens studio recordings versus live ones, it just a different ballgame IMO.
