Title: Gold hardware good or bad idea?
Post by: Gizmo on January 30, 2008, 03:59:50 PM
Been looking at the PRS range. The artists are very nice, especially with the brazillian woods used but they always have gold hardware and personally I think it looks naff. Wish they did them with nickel and still the neck wood options. I love some of the finished on their guitars but the head stocks are the same colour and I personally dont think that looks good. Dark /natuaral wood colours are the best.

You should include a picture of your guitar for people to make a decision about how it would look on yours.  You can really never tell, most of the time it doesn't work though.

I bought gold hardware for a project which went tits up before I finished it.  After laying it on a few guitars to see if it would suit, I would say that it really does depend on the guitar.  On 90% of guitars it really does look 'orrible.

It's not a massive job to change the hardware though if you really feel the need.  I'd aso have a chat with Feline or someone regarding putting a headstock vaneer on.  On the surface, it sholdn't cost too much (but probably more tan you'd think due to the refinishing)

Been some changes for 2008 but think it still stands, Artist pack can be had with Gold or Silver hardware (just most are ordered by Dealers with Gold).

I think gold looks ok, but after a year or so alot of it is rubbed off and it just looks plain fugly.

But you shouldn't have to spend PRS Artist money and then lay out more cash on replacement hardware and headstock veneers!

I'm not a fan of gold hardware.  Looks great on some black guitars, but that's about it.

Most guitars look better with chrome or black -

I must admit you're 100% right about the Yamahas.  Ibanez Artists, Rocket Rolls and Detroyers too, come to think of it.

I guess it suits ornate guitars.

It suits blue guitars imo.

Gold on darker guitars definately works - on a white one though, it looks a bit gash I think.

On black LP's I think that Nickel looks better, like the black 68 Custom.
And on the white ones, the faded gold colour is perfect methinks.

Basically, all white and black and some natural guitars look best with gold hardware I think. Chrome/nickel on everything else. Black hardware never really worked for me.

What about blue and purple guitars? Gold hardware looks great on them.

I think gold hardware looks great on my LP,
really classy, but note my LP is pretty darker (browner top)

I had a SmartWood LP a few years back, with a curupuay top.  Nice guitar, but the one thing I didn't like was the gold hardware, to be honest.  :(

Yeah, can't argue with all gold.  Although it would still look good with nickel (but not chrome, I think).

I like mixed coloured hardware

on my les paul i was gonna change it all to black & burnt chrome

but ive grown to love the look of gold tom and burnt chrome bridge golf neck and black tuners

ill get a new pic soon so you can see.

plus my bridge is slightly faded too
